  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 03:04 PM) The one trademark he has shown through his trip in the minors is extreme inconsistency. Well, if that carries over into the majors, he'll fit right in with the rest of the 25-man roster!
  2. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 03:01 PM) I think they really wanted him but the Pads must have wanted more in the trade. I think you're right. Too bad that the Padres will ask for even more now.
  3. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 03:00 PM) Sox definitely should have grabbed Jon Jay when they got Shields. LHB and good contact. I also foresee the Sox being outbid on Bruce, who is currently sporting a .900-ish OPS.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 02:49 PM) Jay Bruce, your plane is waiting Unfortunately, Bruce can't play CF. At this point, I'm wondering if somebody like Jon Jay might be a better fit.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 01:50 PM) Age is a number. Not all guys are on the same developmental path at a certain age. Anderson is proably something like 1000 ABs, maybe more, behind kids his age. He didn't play baseball his first two years of HS. He hardly played in college either. His entire college career was barely more than just Gordon Beckham's last year of college in terms of total ABs. That isn't even counting lost time in the off season that baseball only guys got. This is exactly why I'm not excited about Anderson being called up. Maybe he's physically talented and mentally tough enough to deal with being sent to the bigs early, and maybe he's not. I hope that he rakes with the Sox and dispels my concerns.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 02:11 PM) As John Kruk once said when a woman criticized him for being a professional athlete and smoking in public, lady I'm no athlete. I'm a baseball player. I recall seeing Kruk standing outside of the visitor's dugout at Wrigley back in the late '80s or early '90s, smoking and eating Ding-Dongs. He was a treasure.
  7. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 01:46 PM) You've read nothing about how he was excelling at Charlotte? Because he was excelling at Charlotte. Apparently my information is a month or so out of date. I know that his walk rate was bad early on. I hope that he's really ready and that Hahn isn't doing this for the sake of doing something.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 01:30 PM) I knew this would happen. He isn't the White Sox ace. They need him to be a #4. He has shown this season he could be a really decent #4. He has also shown the last 2 times out he can be worse than JB Shuck. I will take my chances he pitches more like a #4 than an OF the rest of the year. At this point, it looks like Gonzalez is our #4. He's been quite good after those first couple of starts. So if Shields is successful at being an innings-eater who keeps us in the game most of the time (i.e., 2012-2015 Danks), then he'll be an effective (if overpaid) #5.
  9. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 12:09 PM) It should go without saying that any trade for a player like Reddick who is in the last year of his Contract would be preceded by talks with his agent about the parameters of a Contract, 1.e., 3 years x dollars... I would be happy to get decent trade value for Anderson who appears to lack plate discipline and may not have the defensive skills to remain at SS. If the Sox could do a sign-and-trade move with Reddick, that would be worth considering. But I don't think that's going to happen, as this winter is going to be a player's market and Reddick most likely wants to test that market. I also don't think that the Sox want to move Anderson, as they don't have an answer at SS going forward and Anderson is the best position player prospect in the organization.
  10. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:54 AM) Maybe this is far fetched but I suppose that it is at least possible that the Anderson move might also serve as a predicate for a trade. i.e., Saladino or Anderson for a player like Josh Reddick, Cargo, etc. If Hahn traded Anderson for a few months of Reddick, he should be fired. I doubt that Anderson will be traded. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:55 AM) If Anderson is worse than Rollins and Shields worse than Latos and/or Anderson, someone is building their own grave. So I would think they are confident these are upgrades. Shields was awful, but he's not that bad. I think there is better than 50/50 shot he is better than Latos. Whether that's worth picking up the money they pay him, I don't know. If Shields was getting paid Latos money, I wouldn't have a problem with him. But $30M for a 34-year-old with a ton of innings on his arm, declining velocity, and a below-average record in a pitcher's park in the NL sounds like a serious reach. Yeah, he won't be as bad as he was a couple of nights ago. But I don't see him being a significantly better option than EJ or one of our minor league pitchers at this point. Maybe Shields isn't as bad as Danks was this year, but he's probably not far away and he might be there in 2017.
  11. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:50 AM) I hope not. If so, they both should be fired. I hope they they did it because they think he is ready. Maybe they think that, but it just doesn't make sense to me. Anderson is a defensive downgrade from Saladino. Offensively, he's probably an upgrade. But how much of an upgrade? A .700 OPS vs. a .650 OPS? Is that enough to justify bringing him up early? Maybe, but I'm not seeing it.
  12. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:48 AM) That remains to be seen. He has a better track record than either of them. So did Danks. Age and wear-and-tear on the arm changes that.
  13. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:40 AM) What does 'ready' mean? Just cause he isn't fully developed yet doesn't mean he isn't capable of contributing at the major league level. It's entirely possible that Rick feels this gives the current major league team the best chance to win and is the best thing for Tim. I know that's how I feel. Nothing I've read about Anderson this year suggested that he was excelling at Charlotte and was ready to take the next step. And you have to remember that Anderson is not your typical prospect. He was primarily a basketball player in high school who didn't play baseball until later. So, development-wise, he's a little behind. For the sake of his development, it would've been preferable to leave Anderson in AAA for the remainder of the year and allow him to continue developing. So while Anderson may be the best option for the Sox (and that's debatable), I don't agree that it's the best thing for Anderson in the long-term. And the Sox's farm system isn't exactly loaded with can't-miss position player prospects, so I wish that they would've handled him a little more cautiously. Especially since he's probably a .700 OPS in a best-case scenario this season, and thus a very modest upgrade over Saladino/Sanchez. He's also defensive downgrade from Saladino, which further lowers his current value to the team.
  14. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:34 AM) Do you really thinks that's it or are they trying to improve a team that isn't playing well? If making moves is desperate, what would say if they didn't make any moves? There's a difference between making smart moves and making moves for the sake of making a move. Shields was a "DO SOMETHING!" move that probably won't help the team all that much. Erik Johnson and Latos could've done Shields' job at a fraction of the cost. Morneau is a smart move that has a chance of actually helping the team. He's older and coming off of an injury, but will probably be more productive than Avi after his rehab stint.
  15. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:22 AM) I dont want to go down that rabbit hole again but there are a lot of reasons why. For one, that is not how JR operates. Two, JR wouldnt do that. JR would probably offer Hahn a different position within the organization (probably Kenny's) rather than fire him outright, but I don't doubt for a second that JR would strongly consider removing Hahn from the GM position this winter. JR doesn't have another 10 or 15 years to win another championship. He wants to win now, and his public irritation with this team's performance shows his lack of patience. If Hahn was so certain about his job security, he wouldn't be making desperation moves like throwing $30M at a washed-up James Shields and bringing up Tim Anderson a half-season before he's ready.
  16. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:15 AM) I do not believe that is even the slightest bit possibe, no matter what happens. If they don't win another game this year I still don't see Hahn losing his job. Why?
  17. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 11:01 AM) With the past few moves, I think it's safe to say that everyone on this team including the coaching staff has been put on notice. I didn't believe that Ventura was in any danger of losing his job but after seeing them cut dead weight, I truly believe he is a bad series in KC away from being gone. It also feels like Rick Hahn is under a large amount of pressure to win this year. Given the desperation of trading for an overpaid, over-the-hill James Shields and rushing Anderson to the majors, I think that Hahn is in danger of losing his job as well.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 10:58 AM) Remember, Avisail is in his first arbitration year this year and is making $2 million. If a team "took a flyer on him", in order to keep him for next year that team would have to offer him arbitration again and spend like $4 million on him to do so. The alternative is just wait until he is non-tendered this offseason or DFAd to clear a 40 man roster spot during the season and then sign him for a pittance in either case. You don't take flyers on guys who have started their arb years and are non-tender candidates at the trade deadline because you're not going to want to pay them their next year's money. Ah, I forgot about his arb status. Thanks.
  19. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 10:42 AM) Would AAA do Avi any good or is he just cooked? If the Sox are able to land Bruce or somebody else who can effectively DH, I imagine that Avi would be part of the package. He's young and physically talented enough (and still has an option left) that I think a team would be willing to take a flyer on him. If that doesn't happen, I imagine that Avi and Morneau platoon at DH, with Shuck (a lefty) being the odd man out. It wouldn't be optimal having Avi as the fourth outfielder, but Eaton can spell Ajax in CF, so it wouldn't be a complete mess.
  20. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 10:34 AM) Well you could DH Saladino. People don't want Avi in the line up anymore If RV did that, then even I would join the "Fire Robin" chorus.
  21. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 10:31 AM) How about playing Saladino 2B and Anderson SS with Lawrie DHing? Lawrie's defense seems pretty solid to me, so I don't know why RV would do that.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 9, 2016 -> 07:06 PM) Wow. Is that all he said, or one Tweet of the best comment of a long interview? Bush league to not print the whole article. But that single comment taken alone means Robin is GONE. I don't think that Hahn has the power to fire RV. JR would likely have to sign off on that one. I'm not sure that the comment is anything other than posturing. Fans want accountability right now, so the Sox have to feed that perception with regard to the manager.
  23. QUOTE (gosoxtim8 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 10:10 AM) it going to take time to learn the ropes of fileding in the majors but i think he can do it No, the challenge for young players is hitting ML pitching. Just about all of them can field their positions well by the time they get called up.
  24. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 09:51 AM) Probably because they think Anderson is just better. I hope Saladino continues to play fairly regularly, spelling the other 3; his D is sound, he's improving and we will have 2 infield openings in 2 years. Hopefully we won't fill those with 37 year olds or via jettisoning quality young hitters. Anderson may be a better hitter than Saladino at this point. But he's not better defensively. That said, I also hope that Saladino gets semi-regular play. I also hope he's used frequently as a late-inning defensive replacement.
  25. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 10:45 AM) Hahn ain't f***ing around. My guess is that it was made clear to him that his job is in jeopardy. I hope that applies to Kenny as well.
