QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 10:17 AM) Bill Shaikin @BillShaikin 8m8 minutes ago Eaton says La Roche told him he did have contractual agreement for son to be in clubhouse. So LaRoche and/or LaRoche surrogates have been throwing spitballs at the Sox via Twitter for the past two days, yet this is the first that we're hearing about it? Does not compute. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 10:16 AM) And why would Kenny flat out lie (per the Sun-Times link)? And honestly, with Sale, get Friedman on the phone if he keeps this up. Put Eaton on the market as well. Edit: I'm not saying at this exact moment, but if they keep going. A handful of players on this team area embarrassingly immature.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 10:12 AM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 2m2 minutes ago Chris Sale said players want to hear from #whitesox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. Oh, they'll freaking hear from him. I'd love to be a fly on the wall during that meeting.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 10:08 AM) Bob Nightengale @BNightengale 34s34 seconds ago Player rep Adam Eaton said Adam LaRoche had clause in contract to allow son and players union now involved #whitesox If that's true, why haven't we heard about it until now? That doesn't make sense.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 10:01 AM) Quick guess is KW told the clubhouse LaRoche didn't have an agreement with the club prior to signing a contract about Drake's access Which is probably only half true. I wish that the Sox would put as much energy into defense and base-running as they do into their defense of Drake LaRoche.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:57 AM) Wouldn't shock me. Get Dombrowski on the phone Don't get me wrong, I don't WANT him to leave. But, if the Sox flop again this season, I'd probably be talking to Dombrowski in December.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:56 AM) You might want to look up the real definition of temper tantrum. If you want to act as LaRoche's unpaid PR representative, that's your business. But your, uh, spirited defense of him isn't reflecting well on you.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:55 AM) oh good lord Bob Nightengale @BNightengale 11s12 seconds ago Chris Sale: We got bold faced lied to. #WhiteSox So is Sale looking to get traded now?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 09:49 AM) I missed the fact that LaRoche threw a temper-tantrum. Do you have a link, or are you just making up things and calling them facts? Quitting your job because your boss won't allow your kid to come to work with you every day qualifies as a temper tantrum.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 10:34 AM) Maybe legally, but not morally. JR held a press conference after Horace Grant went back on a verbal agreement. He said he lacked character. Yeah, JR plays hardball when it comes to money. Players also routinely cheat on their wives. Melky tested positive for steroids before joining the Sox. Baseball executives and players aren't known for their moral behavior. The Sox let Drake LaRoche become omnipresent in the clubhouse last year, and then decided to change their policy this year because at least one player complained about it. That doesn't even begin to compare to the depraved crap that goes on every day in MLB. And it's not like they're singling out LaRoche's kid or completely shutting off his access. The fact that LaRoche would throw a temper-tantrum over a clubhouse rule change, allow his teenage kid to be the subject of a media feeding frenzy, and allow snide remarks about the Sox to be published via his company's Twitter account tells me that he's not as super-moralistic as he thinks he is.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 18, 2016 -> 10:27 AM) He did the team a favor. But he shouldn't have to compromise. Why don't the Sox compromise with Chris Sale and rip up his contract and give him one he deserves? You make an agreement, whether you like it, love it, or hate it in a year or so, you made the agreement. If you don't have your word............ There's a huge difference between a written, legally binding contract and an off-the-record gentleman's agreement that may or may not have been made.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 05:22 PM) Haven't you heard? They won the 2016 World Series. I don't live near Chicago, but I've heard that's the dominant attitude right now. Hubris is never a good thing.
-
The Cubs are a bit mouthy for a team that hasn't won anything in over a century.
-
Good. I didn't want him anyway.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 04:14 PM) I dont know the contract but my guess that unless the Sox have chimps for attorneys there should be a clause that states they have his rights through the end of the contract (even if he retires) so they would have to release him from the contract. Otherwise any guy who doesnt like his contract could just "retire" and then go sign somewhere else. I imagine that the Sox and LaRoche could, in theory, mutually agree to terminate the remainder of LaRoche's contract, where LaRoche would not be be paid the remainder of his deal and would become a free agent. That said, I doubt that the MLBPA would be OK with that.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 04:08 PM) Not really. They are sophisticated parties that were both represented by attorneys if it was a condition to his employment, it should have been in writing. If it really was agreed to by all, why was it not in writing? I cant imagine that a multi-million dollar agreement does not have a merger/integration clause. And if it does, then the entire point of having the written agreement is so that neither party can come back later and say that there were other terms to the agreement. I dont know the facts, I havent seen the contract, but I would rather be on the Sox side then Laroche's (from a legal standpoint). If the Sox materially breached his contract, why would he not sue for breach instead of retire? The fact he retired seems to suggest that he had no legal ground to stand on. I have no background in law, but I thought that was very telling as well.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 03:50 PM) I heard on some program last year (inside the clubhouse?) that Jerry's main objection was how it went about, something about how Toronto's owner is friends with Jerry, and he didn't like how he approached Kenny first without talking to JR. That's what I heard as well. I also heard the word "tampering" being thrown around, though there were no formal charges made.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 03:34 PM) I'd like Don Cooper to do 5 minutes on this topic... That would be epic.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 03:20 PM) Most important thing from that: An ESPN report that the White Sox players considered boycotting Wednesday’s spring game in show of support for LaRoche wasn’t incorrect but was also “exaggerated,” a source said. It was a thought among a few players that didn’t gain any more traction, the source said. I'm not surprised that the sensationalist media exaggerated this. Also good to know that our players have more sense than what was previously reported.
-
QUOTE (shakes @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 03:20 PM) Not sure, but when it came time to hire someone Toronto passed on him. Then there was a report that Seattle was interested and it turns out they showed no interest and hired someone else. I think those stories of interest came from Kenny. I think that Reinsdorf blocked Toronto from talking to him. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong about this.
-
Why is LaRoche's meat company doing all of this tweeting? Does LaRoche not have control over his employees, or does he honestly think that he's not responsible for their comments?
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 03:05 PM) He has a perpetual contract. If JR doesn't want him to leave, unless he outright quits, he is going nowhere. JR won't let him talk to other teams. He basically is the White Sox president except for title. Another thing to consider is that JR might not own this team a few years from now. A new ownership group might want to clean house.
-
QUOTE (shakes @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 03:03 PM) If that job existed for him, he would have taken it by now. I don't think his reputation is good enough for him to get one of those jobs. He hasn't shown he is very adept at changing with the game over the past 5+ years. Wasn't Toronto interested in him a year or so ago? That said, I agree that he has some negatives. The Sox's farm system fell apart under his tenure as GM. And there was the corrupt scout director (or whatever his title was) in Latin America.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 02:58 PM) That's true. I just want him to be on the Sox for his entire career and it sucks knowing that he'll go elsewhere in a few years. Sale will cost way too much and will probably be past his peak when he's a free agent. Let the Yankees overpay for him.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 17, 2016 -> 02:51 PM) I think Rick will hit the road on his own. There are more and more stories about how Rick and KW aren't in sync. If both RH and RV disagreed with KW on this, and that could be for show, and he overruled, it may make the divide a little greater. Sullivan seems convinced RH is a bit frustrated about KW stepping on toes. I think it's more likely that Kenny takes a President of Baseball Operations position somewhere else. He's been with the organization for something like 20 years now. And while I think that he handled the LaRoche mess relatively well (given the circumstances), it's time for him to move on.

I also don't see Hahn getting fired if things go sub-.500 again this season. He's only been GM since late 2012.
