Harper wants $400M (which the Yankees will pay) and Machado should be able to get $300M. I could *possibly* see the Sox signing Machado in 2019 if there are "outs" in the contract (like Albert Belle's), but I don't think it's likely. I'm not even sure if Machado would be interested in signing with the White Sox.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 07:39 PM) At this point, Bregman is more of a sure thing than Moncada is. Again, not happening, but yes I would take Bregman for Q 1-for-1. Q also has one more year of team control than Sale, and does not have Sale's childish issues with authority. One can make the argument that Q has better long-term value than Sale. I wouldn't be upset if Hahn traded Q for Bregman striaght-up, but I'd definitely have the feeling that Houston got the better end of the deal in terms of value, and that Hahn didn't get enough quantity in return. -

QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 06:01 PM) Surprising enough, I almost immediately said "no" to myself. I don't think getting Bregman alone benefits the Sox. They still need more positional depth than one guy. I wouldn't complain if they did land him, but I don't think it capitalizes on the overall needs of the organizations at this time. I pretty much agree with this. I think that Q's value is relatively close to Sale's. If Hahn wouldn't take Moncada alone for Sale, I don't know why he'd take Bregman for Q straight-up. I'd want at least one other Top 100 prospect in that deal. -
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 03:44 PM) Really?! FIP is a far better stat than ERA to begin with as it takes fielding out of the picture WHIP is also really important I would look at those before saves and ERA which can be skewed and don't tell me much about performance WHIP seems to have fallen out of favor in recent years, and I think that's unfortunate.

QUOTE (The Mighty Mite @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 02:37 PM) They had a nice team in 1990 but the main reason they doubled the attendance from 1989 was because 1990 was the last year for old Comiskey. Not really. They won 94 games and were in a division race with Oakland that year. That's what really caused fans to flock to the ballpark. I imagine that the Sox will draw 1.4 million this year and maybe 1.25 million the following year. I don't expect attendance to fall to 1989 levels, when the Dan Ryan was under construction and the old ballpark was falling apart. The current ballpark is in much better shape and is way more family-friendly. Season ticket sales will be in the toilet, but I imagine that the Sox will still get a semi-decent share of casual fans over the next couple of years. My guess is that the Sox spend in the FA market two years from now and field a respectable (maybe 85 wins) team in 2019 and become contenders in 2020. The Cubs will be on the downswing by then and the attention and fans will begin to return.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 12:50 PM) I really think he is a great bounceback candidate. I think a decent amount of his problems last year were due to usage and injuries. Agreed. He's only 31 and I don't see an age-related decline yet.

This isn't the best time to trade Robertson, unless he's part of a larger deal. His WHIP was up last season and the Sox would be selling low on him right now. If Hahn can't get what he wants for Robertson right now, hold on to him and revisit trade discussions in July.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 10:45 AM) Calderon was Avi Garcia long before Avi was. Literally the only highlight worth watching in his career was his climbing to the of the scoreboard in Detroit to steal a homer. Calderon's bling was a highlight in itself. -
Eaton to Nats/Giolito, Lopez, Dunning to Sox

Does Jones have any experience closing games? If not, his trade value will not be super-high right now. I'd rather hold on to Jones and see how he does as a closer once Robertson is dealt. Then trade him before age begins to erode his effectiveness. -
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 11:45 PM) I think they could've easily won without him They just barely won with him, which would mean that he was a drag on their bullpen, rather than an asset.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 10:18 PM) Larry Himes. Took over for Hawk. Sent Harold away. Traded all the starting pitchers.i think Fisk, Ozzie, and Ivan Calderon were the only guys he kept. He even traded Kenny Williams. Yep, the sucktitude of the late '80s is legendary. But Himes put together an outstanding core and things really turned around in 1990, culminating in the '93 division champs and possibly a WS appearance in '94 if the strike hadn't occurred. -

QUOTE (Knuckles @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 08:35 PM) The Astros have discussed a Jose Quintana deal with the White Sox but as of now find the price too steep. -- Jake Kaplan https://t.co/p43H4IqisC Fine with me. The Sox should be in no rush to deal Q. Wait for the right package. -
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 08:07 PM) You don't hang on to a pitcher of Q's caliber during a rebuild. The injury risk is too high. You cash in for several players that will help during the rebuild. There's not point in having a very good pitcher on a garbage team when the franchise in a clear rebuild. That depends how long the rebuild is. If it's a two-year rebuild and Q is under contract through 2020, then you consider keeping Q. Up until today, I thought that was the plan. But in dealing Eaton, the Sox appear to be starting from scratch. So as much as I'd hate to see Q go, you definitely deal him if you can get the right package in return.

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 06:56 PM) It's always best to sell high on guys like Eaton. Most underrated thing about this is that Hahn needs praised about his contract negotiations that allowed him to nail this off-season (signing Sale, Eaton and Q to controllable contracts a couple years ago) As long as Hahn gets a couple more high-tier position player prospects this winter, he's going about this the right way. You can't win via free agency and trades when you're not a marquee franchise with deep pockets. -

QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 06:54 PM) Hahn echoes what has been said here. They are interested in the best possible packages, doesn't matter the position. In other words, they're holding a full-scale firesale and don't expect to compete until 2020. They'll worry about the starting lineup for 2018 next winter. -

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 05:35 PM) Are you trolling? Are you aware of the fact that there are more trades to be made? Not to mention that some of these pitching prospects can be flipped for hitting prospects (or ML hitters) at a later date. -

QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 05:27 PM) Totally unrelated note: If Frazier isn't bringing back a lot of interest because of his 1 year left, I'd be fine trying to work out a small extension for Frazier. I think it's important to have SOME sort of leadership in the clubhouse, especially when there are a ton of young guys around, and Frazier seems like he fits that bill. Again, that's only if he is down for playing "dad" and Hahn can't get good value. Frazier is a good clubhouse guy and fans also like him. As long as they don't overpay for him, I don't mind him being part of the rebuilding process. The question now is if Frazier wants to re-sign with a team that won't be competitive until he's in his mid-30s. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 04:53 PM) What did the half billion that they do, do? What exactly did the Sox do, other then consistently suck the past few years? Yes the Cubs spent some money, but they also whiffed on quite a bit of that money. What exactly was your proposition...continue to half ass it? This deal was a trade of one player (who was very good, but probably someone who was overrated by advanced stats), for three guys who all have potential to be above average major leaguers...the exact time of quantity deal you had been looking for (albeit this focused on pitching talent...but you can't ignore value where value is...especially when a rebuild takes time). Lots of other parts to still dangle and continue to add significant talent / depth to the entire organization. The problem is that the Sox haven't really sucked. Since 2013, they've hovered in the 70-something win column. That's worse than sucking, because you don't get any Top 5 draft picks and the Sox never garner enough fan interest to justify spending big on free agents. So it's difficult to take those big steps forward. So I'm going to be happy when the Sox win 62 games next season because they'll be drafting an impact player the following spring who will be able to help this team win in 2020. -
Well, I have to give it to Hahn. He's not messing around. If guys like Eaton and Q are getting dealt, it may not be the best idea to re-sign Frazier. The Sox might not be contenders until 2020 or so.

Red Sox acquire Chris Sale, White Sox get Moncada+

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 02:03 PM) This. He can't handle being told something he doesn't want to hear. Which makes him a good co-worker, but a crappy employee. Not surprisingly, he was the first to be shown the door. -
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 11:41 AM) What's the point of paying Frazier as we go through a rebuild though? The point is that the Sox need somebody to play 3B competently and to hit with power in the middle of the lineup. Unless the Sox are willing to move Moncada to 3B, they have no in-house answer for that position. If the Sox hold on to Q and Eaton, this won't be a four-year rebuild. They should be competitive by 2019. I don't know what Frazier's market value is right now, but I don't see him commanding much more than 4/55 or 4/60. That's not a large risk for a guy who should be good for 30-40 HRs and average-to-above-average defense at 3B for 2-3 years of that contract.

QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 01:41 PM) Unless I'm missing something here, besides the jersey cutting incident here, what other instances can we point to to conclude Chris Sale is an "asshat"? How about Sale cursing out Kenny Williams during the Drake LaRoche incident?
