If it's going to be corporate I think they at least should keep it local and something fans will like and also something that will make visitors curious. "Giordano's Field." "Malnati's Stadium." "Buona Ballpark." "Portillo's Park." I mean those places probably don't have the money to shell out for naming rights but at least it would iconic to the city (even if they are all chains and the best ones are the mom-n-pop shops that only the locals know).

Wintrust Bank seems to be involved quite often with marketing both baseball teams. We all know it's going to be something corporate, might as well be local? I thought I heard Wintrust had a proposal to JR for when the US Cellular deal expired...something like "Wintrust Field at Comiskey Park" or something. I wouldn't mind that. If I had my druthers (I promise I'm not Rick Hahn) it would be simple. Sox Park. That's what I call it now anyways, guaranteed rate and all associated nicknames is so stupid. Other teams have done it: Yankee Stadium, Dodgers Stadium, Angel Stadium, Nationals Park, Oriole Park at Camden Yards. I didn't grow up in the Comiskey era so I don't have any real sentimental value to the Comiskey name, although I do understand the historical value. They could also get creative with the South Side or the Neighborhood. "Southsiders Stadium." "Sox Park at The 78."

Sox select John Schriffen to be TV PbP announcer
Ducksnort replied to fathom's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It's possible. But the reporting says he pulled his name out due to scheduling issues with espn. I mean it's ridiculous, get a clue Brooks. Having a national guy is GOOD for the team. -
Honestly, this is a problem for MLB. Other than the Dodgers, this has been a very boring offseason for the sport. I don't know how to fix it but they need to do something about it to make the offseason more engaging for fans.

Everyone knows he's going to sign as a catcher ?

Obviously best case scenario if this happens it all comes out of JR's pocket (and then he promptly sells the team LOL). If that won't happen, haven't different cities gotten creative with funding new stadiums in ways that don't directly pull money from the pockets of the residents? For example, I thought I heard of a city (not sure which one) paying for their new stadium through adding on a tax to all hotel room charges for a fixed amount of years.

This needs to be the hype song before every 1st pitch at guaranteed rate this year.

2023-24 NFL Season Thread
Ducksnort replied to CentralChamps21's topic in A and J's Olde Tyme Sports Pub
It literally felt like a Bears/Packers game. It had all the same feelings lol. -
Honestly, I don't think JR is completely against spending money. Didn't the Sox have a top 5 or top 7 payroll in baseball just a couple years ago? In my opinion, it's not necessarily how much is spent, but how it is spent (yes, I understand that actually spending is also important). Hahn/Kenny didn't spend well. Yes, they got handcuffed by Jerry when it came to guys like Harper or Machado, but they were horrid in other areas (overspending on the bullpen while completely ignoring RF, 2B and defense). I would bet money (only Jerry's though) that since spending all that cash, and honestly wasting so much of it by releasing a lot of guys still under contract (hello Leury Garcia and Dallas Kuechel, among others), that Jerry is extremely hesitant to have a top-spending payroll again in the game, since it didn't work out the first time around.
-
Of course JR is trimming payroll. Here's my thing about the payroll trimming: spending all the money in the world doesn't necessarily mean you're going to win anything, or even be competitive (ex: NYM, SD). You need someone who can: A) Spend that money wisely, and B) create an environment that great players want to be apart of. Rick Hahn said the money will be spent. Well, he spent it, but he did it in an obscenely stupid way.

Ohtani Watch: Dodgers sign - 700M over 10yrs
Ducksnort replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Out of the American league--not sure how much that really matters anymore with how much interleague play there is now. Not going to the Cubs--would have been real cool for the city of Chicago. Probably not so much for Sox fanbase. But the Cubs wouldn't go spending on any of their other needs after shelling out that kind of money, so they likely wouldn't win anything anytime soon even with Ohtani. Would be Angels situation 2.0 -
Ohtani Watch: Dodgers sign - 700M over 10yrs
Ducksnort replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
So who was it that was reporting that money wasn't the motivating factor for Ohtani? ? I did the math. This guy makes more money in one single game that my entire 4-year education is worth. Let that sink in. -
Dear Lord this team won't be able to hit anything. Robert, and Eloy for the 50 games he'll be un-injured, and that's about it.

Lol, this has Jerry written all over it. "Hey Chris--I like this. From now on, any contract from a player you acquire or sign must be paid by another team." ??

House of L Podcast - Why Be A Sox Fan?
Ducksnort replied to South Side Hit Men's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If I weren't an impressionable 11-12 year old in 05 and 06, I'd probably be a cubs fan -
I need help. I would like to start investing, but I really don't know where or how to start. It seems like there are so many options...index funds, savings bonds, crypto, Robinhood, and on and on and on. Is there anyone on this board that has lots of experience and can help a brother out? How and where do I start? How much money should I start out with? Can I do this on my own or should I have an advisor? What other questions should I be asking?

Obviously not a cubs fan, lol, but if he went there I think it would be great for the city of Chicago -
How do I get the best deal for my Moncada city connect jersey, lol.

This team is going to look vastly different in 2024, me thinks.

I don't feel like going through the entire thread so idk if this has been mentioned already, but I wonder if AJ Pierzynski would be interested in the job. I enjoyed listening to him on Fox and I like his podcast. Obvious ties to the org and fans would be immediately interested. I like Jason but I would like AJ more. Just not sure if he wants that kind of commitment. EDIT: just saw AJ's latest episode on Getz's gm mtgs comments. Nevermind, it aint happening lol.

Funny, the Kopech thing, that's immediately what I thought, after my tiger fan buddy broke the news to me saying "ours now, b****".
