His comment was tongue and cheek. DK is right though about the winning culture here, our season turned around when he spoke out against what was taking place. Eaton was brought back and TLR was brought in to light a fire under asses and to add toughness.
So in 2019 one catcher was viewed as a top 3 catcher in baseball and the other was viewed as an all star for the first half of the year and then a flame out. One had an OPS+ of 119 in 2019 and the other 108 after a scorching hot start to 2019.
But when Grandal was signed McCann was nose diving to the finish line. Nothing wrong with signing a top 3 catcher in baseball under those circumstances.
Is McCann only making 8 per year? And have you factored in McCann was good for half of 2019 and for less than 60 games this year? That is not even one full season worth of time. McCann can be argued as being a good player that has finally figured it out, but better than Grandal? No one is buying that at the moment.
We have to remember that Grandal is still regarded as a top 3 to 5 catcher in baseball by damn near everyone. It's not like we punted McCann for a scrub.
I agree, but tight budgeted teams shouldn't sign him. Teams that can sign big contracts and reload on the fly will be okay. We spend lesser amounts of money and our signings over the past decade have mostly been a waste of money. You still have to get the job done based on what you are given to work with.
The McStanns and Foodies are getting a little out of hand lately. I wasn't a fan of signing James at all, but he impressed the hell out of me. He is a baller for sure, but he also has limitations. I wish him the best and will enjoy Grandal the few few seasons.
If I'm not mistaken Dombrowski won a title with the Marlins and they won another the year after he left or something like that. He then rebuilt the Tigers and took them to two World Series' and won another title with Boston. He may not be perfect but he is good at getting that Pennant.
I'm not saying he doesn't want him back, just that it ain't likely. DK knows it was always a longshot. This doesn't mean James sucks, in fact it is the opposite, as his market is robust.
Wow that will go over well. Why not just say "We saw some good things out of Adam and believe last season was a mirage." Why mention the organization being cheap?
