Again, there is a difference between being ignorant and being racist. TLR, like most Caucasians in the US, are not around Black people much. Thus, many people do not understand racism or that it is even a big problem because they aren't exposed to it. . This becomes two fold when the Black people you encounter are wealthy professional athletes removed from their previous situations. While I was in college, people had no idea I grew up in Englewood after living in the Projects for a while. When people see me now, most assume I've always had a great life and transfer my success to other Black people. People cannot imagine the struggle and difficulty just making it day to day. Since they don't see it, it is assumed that everyone is on equal footing and that those who are struggling in life are doing so because they don't work hard, or because they failed in life. I don't consider this to be intentional racism, but mass ignorance that needs to be addressed as a country.

He was fired for being awful and replaced by Melvin wasn't he?

To clarify my stance. I do not think TLR is misinformed because he does not believe kneeling during the anthem is appropriate. I think he is misinformed about another comment he made in addition to it. As Sox fans it is nice to share our views as it adds perspective and knowledge to each of us. That is why I am glad this thread has not been locked. But as I said in my most recent post, calling someone a racist is a VERY big deal. And as a man of color, I will always give someone the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. People grow up in different situations and are taught different beliefs and I'm okay with that. A racist to me is someone that actively discriminates, puts down, and oppresses because of race. I don't think TLR fits the bill here because I think he is simply an abrasive and outspoken personality to begin with regardless of your race. I think many Sox fans also won't give his comments the benefit of the doubt because they don't want him here at all costs.

Ignorance also does not equate racist. He understands why people are protesting as do others against kneeling, bigots and non bigots alike. It is reasonable to think it is disrespecting the military when you watch games and see the military saluting and being honored before and after the anthem. At sporting events you always see the flag when the military is present on the field to some capacity. When a war hero dies, a flag is often times placed near the casket or wrapped around the casket. When my lifelong navy serving uncle died, flags were all over his funeral. Not once have I seen a flag at another non serving person's funeral. Ignorance needs to be corrected in this scenario, but it does not equate to racist. It is very reasonable to equate the flag to the military when it is done so quite often in this country. Telling a black man how he should and shouldn't protest racism is wrong but not racist. Telling someone that they cannot find an action someone does wrong is also wrong. Especially when the word racist is used.

The GM was on on this thing. That's how the complicated camera system got set up in the stadium. At this point Hinch just went along with it to keep his once in a lifetime job. He didn't shoot anyone, so I couldn't care less about his role if he truly was against it. Personally, I would have told the GM first, and if he was in on it, I go back to work and collect my millions. I would have documented all of this though and my meeting with the GM.

As a man of color, I fully support athletes kneeling during the anthem and all forms of peaceful nonviolent protests. This being said, the argument of using veterans opinions to show that kneeling isn't disrespectful is weak imo for two main reasons. 1. You can also find just as many vets that say it is disrespectful to kneel during the athem. 2. Human rights should not be a pick and choose event. It should be acceptable for someone of color, lgbtq, women, etc to protest as they see fit, even during the anthem. This doesn't make them bad people, even if you do not agree it is the right way to protest. On the flip side, it is also the right of someone to be against kneeling without being called a racist. We are taught our whole lives that you show respect during the national anthem. You rise, take your hat off, and pay attention. Therefore, people against kneeling have the right to believe it is disrespecting the country, just like kneelers have the right to kneel against discrimination and oppression. Some people against kneeling are racist, but others may in fact just believe in what they were taught. I didn't find anything racist about what TLR said, although I disagree with his viewpoint. His comments about Black players and the anthem imo are not racist. I think they are misinformed, but not racist.

TLR is significantly better than Ricky overall. One is a Hall of Fame manager, the other is a Hall of Fame babysitter until a real manager shows up.

No I am not. You said that the best of three series were random, which is true, but that is the case for the playoffs in general. The point I'm making is that the series were not some big deal because they teams that won were expected to for the most part. The teams still standing have also been among the best teams in baseball the past several years. The Dodgers and Rays have been great for a while. Oakland has been a good team for a long time now and the Braves have been a very good team for a couple of years now. All 4 of these teams won series they were projected to. The Astros have played in 2 WS and made an ALCS after they stopped cheating. They swept a team that hasn't won a playoff game since we won it all. No surprise there. The Cubs loss may have been a surprise, but there offense was terrible for the last month of the season. And they've collapsed to finish seasons the two previous years. Their run is coming to a halt and the Marlins are up and coming. San Diego was hot coming down the stretch. They played good ball to finish the season and no surprise they won their series. The Yankees were the hottest team in baseball to finish the year and have Gerrit Cole. No surprise they beat Cleveland. They've also been a very good team the last few years. So, great teams advanced in the post season. Teams that have recently choked late in seasons got beat. A team like the Sox whose manager has cost them games down the stretch cost them a playoff series. Lastly, if the Sox would have played Oakland in a one game series I'm sure the A's would have started Bassit. So no guarantee we win that game based on how he pitched game 2.
-
Is the topic of this conversation about game 3 or in general? Are we that much more better than the A's overall lsst year to say that their victory over us was an act of random short series?
-
As had a better manager, although he messed up game 1. They have high OBP guys and several good starters. These two teams were about even as itnpertains to overall success. Next season we should for sure be better than them.

He and his father could have said nothing or gave a more generic answer.
-
To be fair, your manager having confidence in you to explore your options is a big thing. Confidence is very important to a pitcher. I'll give Coop and Ricky some credit for the turnaround.

1. The Cubs started the season 13 and 3 and finished 8 games over .500. Maybe the Cubs are better than the Marlins, but this season the Marlins had a team just as capable as the Cubs to finish the season. The Marlins would have won if this series was 5 games as well. The Cubs offense was mostly garbage to finish the season except when they played us. Their offense was garbage in the playoffs. 2. The Braves beat the Reds 3. The Twins have lost 16 straight playoff games. The Astros have won a WS and played in several ALCS'. So they are clearly the better team when compared to the Twins. 4. The White Sox and As are a coin flip, but that statement is probably false this past season. The A's were better than us this year and finished the season stronger than we did. No one is shocked they beat us. We did not lose to them because of randomness, our coach, lack of a third starter, and lack of hitting with RISP cost us. Which it had the last few weeks of the season. 5. The Yankees are better than Cleveland, and they won the series as they should have. Again, the randomness of baseball is always there. This season's 3 game series did not lead to anything worth mentioning. As I said, the better teams at time of the games won.

That is a top of rotation starter. Bauer imo is definitely a high quality number 2 at his best.
-
I agree with this. But,the improvement wouldn't come from Ricky most likely. Which is why he was fired. I believe we didn't perform even better this year because Ricky took games out of our hands. If we had a coach like Hinch, Bochy, TLR, Cora, or Q I think we have an even better season.
-
Okay then answer the question. What team won a three game series were someone could strongly argue it was due to randomness of a three game series and not the better team winning? You made the statement so provide an answer.
-
My point is we shouldn't get over confident over this season. The record was very good but in a real season this team wins between 86 and 90 games imo, not the 96 they were on pace to do.
-
No it isn't. The better teams won their series. What team won a three game series that could be argued they only won because of randomness? The Yankees, Rays, and Astros have been at the top of the AL consistently when healthy. This year the Astros proved it without cheating.
-
Can't have it both ways. Can't say praise should be abundant because of the season record and not dive into the why of the record. The AL Central and the NL Central were the worst divisions in each league and the conclusion of this season will prove this. These two divisions only played each other. The Royals and Tigers are bad and would have proven so over the course of 100 games against other teams.
-
In the course of a full season, teams aren't going 100 percent to win every game. Players will rest more because of injury and fatigue, teams will be exposed to more injuries, you will take trips all over the country to play baseball, managers will have Sunday lineups, and they will see a wider range of teams and players that they may not be able to fully prepare for. We are comparing apples to oranges here. But do remember that Joe Maddon got fired after a slump to end the regular season last year. You cannot slump to end the season because of terrible managerial decisions. If it happens, the manager could be fired. Why? Because at that time you are going all out to win the most important games.
-
The good stetches happened against the Royals, Tigers, and Pirates. Although other teams lost more to them, we matched up well and feasted on them. We went 13 and 22 against .500 teams. We went 7 and 13 against the top two teams in our division. This cannot be viewed as great accomplishment. We can appreciate the season being an overall success, but nothing special. The struggles came at the worst time as we were trying to win a division championship and a playoff series. Managers get fired for these types of performances, especially when they may be viewed as the norm. If we are being honest, the Sox and Ricky struggled more than the last 10 games of the season. Ricky in particular made poor decisions throughout the year He was credited by the front office for the team's success as Hahn said Ricky deserves to enjoy our success and to be a part of it. Ricky was so bad the last two and a half weeks that he coached himself out of any chance of being here next year.
-
Renteria was fired because he put the team in a terrible situation the last two weeks of the season with awful game decisions. The marbles were on the table and he pushed them off. As a manager, if you consistently blow with divisions, playoff appearances, and playoff series' on the line, you will be fired, regardless of regular season contributions. The only exception is probably small market 60 million dollar payroll type of clubs. Winning organizations fire managers that lose the most important games because of bad managing.
-
Fair point. I think Bochy would do a great job.
-
Who would be your top two candidates? Not sure I've noticed where you stand on the replacement.
