  1. Then why do coaches sacrifice? Why do hitters move runners over? Why do pitchers bunt when people are on base and no out?
  2. Outs aren't a joy, and coaches prefer hits, bit baseball is a sport where a strong of hits is unlikely, especially with the bottom of the lineup. Coaches sacrificing outs to get runs means they don't like the odds of their batters succeeding without sacrificing. So outs aren't great obviously, but they are the better bet in many cases.
  3. Your point is valid. The thing is are run producing hits are more valuable than walks. My point is to not just look at OBP but OPS. They had a similar year in that department last year. So one cannot say Harper is a big upgrade over Machado offensively. Harper may have been on base more, but Machado wasnt that far behind offensively overall.
  4. The top tier players get on base 35 -38 times out of 100. That is not a good percentage overall. When you mix in lesser players on the team, the odds of getting on base and scoring are low. This is why teams sacrifice outs for a chance to score one run. I care more about Runs produced and defense than OBP. How often do middle of the lineup jitters score after a walk? Harper and Machado's OBP difference is what 4 extra times standing on first out of 100?
  5. Coaches sacrifice outs all the time for runs, so yes, outs can be a good thing, depending on the hitter and situation. If Engel is batting with a man on first and no out in a tie game, he will bunt the runner over. Outs have their place in baseball. I am more negative on strikeouts than in play outs.
  6. Here is a scenario. Bottom of the 9th, 2nd and 3rd with only one out. Is it better to fly out to right or center, or walk? One wins you the game, the other puts your team on position to get doubled up. Also, middle of the order guys who walk aren't getting max value out of the at bat. I'd rather my big hitter put the bat on the ball and see where it goes in most cases.
  7. No, the goal is to score runs. This is a sport where an out can be a good thing, and some do it on purpose to get in better position to score.
  8. Or they can get a three year opt out and redo their contracts if they are worthy of a pay raise, or if the CBA allows them to make even more money. If things fail, they can just stay put and collect fat checks. If things fail for them this year, they are screwed.
  9. The report prior to the 175 offer was 8 and 225 as the bid. So again, are we to believe the Padres had no inclination the bidding for him was low? Are we to believe Machado's agent hasn't called other teams trying to get a take for his client to beat the bid?
  10. The smae reports that have been wrong about everything. Hell, we don't even know if the 7/175 is correct. Again, MLB teams aren't stupid, they know what's going on in the game. Odds are, they are even colluding to keep contracts down.
  11. The point I was making is that it's possible for good players to get hurt. Any injury to Machado and Harper this year on a one year deal hurts big time. If they miss 60 games it will hurt their next contracts.
  12. Kris Bryant, Miggy, Judge, Eaton, Pollock, are a few that come to mind.
  13. To be fair, Manny has had an injury history before so maybe he thinks about that. Bryce is coming off a down year, and if he has another, he may not see this deal again.
  14. Not a chance. That is what an opt out is for. If they outplay the contract, they have a chance to bank on a huge payday and maybe even more inflated salaries down the line. No way they take a 30 million dollar deal and risk injury ruining their gravy train. Would the Yankees pay that money for a guy who definitely wouldn't play hard on a one year deal to protect himself?
  15. I'll buy this. But they still would have known the ballpark area of Manny's offers.
  16. I'm sure the Padres had no idea Machado's offers were that low even though they are a professional organization with all kinds of connections. They needed an Internet report to tell them the offer. Or......... they knew the offer or its ballpark, and waited to see if other teams would drive the price up. After a few months, no one has, so that means no one probably will. Now they can make a low offer to both and sell a great future knowing they have a legit chance. They don't have to fear the Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox or Yankkes.
  17. Not true. Manny and his camp keep in touch with other teams about his availability and his going rate. Teams have made bids and we are two months in, so they are trying to drive the price up with more competitors. Trying to trick teams into thinking the number is high won't work. The Padres have shown interest because it's been three months and he still isn't signed, so he can't be getting the contract he wants.
  18. 65 is cold for California. You are a liar, you're wearing a coat lol.
  19. Well, technically it would be about a 90 degree real feel difference. Negative 56 to positive 40.
  20. We are all Sox fans cheering for the same goal, but sometimes more important things matter. Stay safe this week as it will be the coldest place on Earth. Make sure your folks stay warm and in the house. I almost lost my life to bad weather so take it from me.
  21. Rick Hahn talking this wimp talk after the fans leave. I am still confident as they tea leaves still favor us, and Hahn isn't dumb enough to string fans along with their efforts and lose all trust and credibility.
  22. 1. Hahn called himself a jackass. 2. The venue is moving to McCormick next year.
