The new stadium Globe Life Field will have a retractable roof which will help attendance on hot, humid or rainy days. This is a public/private venture which seems like it is or will become a model for future ventures like that.

Machado will be worth more as the season progresses and teams feel he might be the final piece. It might be possible for a non-contending team to trade for him now, then try to sign him to a long term deal. If he doesn't agree, then trade him in a few weeks when teams will need him even more.

The Cubs and Joe Ricketts got plenty of favors from the City of Chicago including taking part of the streets surrounding the park. And never forget how Arlington stadium was built There are examples too numerous to mention of public financing and favorable tax treatment for private businesses including sports franchises to locate themselves in the city.

Listen know-it-all. Who are you to talk to me or any other poster like that? You know nothing more than anyone else here. You just have another opinion. If Machado is treated fairly and offered what he is worth, he will sign before free agency. The likely outcome now is the Machado will be traded to a contender like the Cubs this year. The Cubs will then do precisely what is suggested - try to sign Machado to a long term deal before he hits free agency.

I would like to see the Sox jump start this rebuild by trading for Machado with a package that overwhelms the O's, and then open the check book to sign him long term before he goes to Free Agency. So, for anyone who might agree, would you consider including Moncada or Giolito or Abreu as a potential centerpiece in a trade for Machado? My guess is that it would take one of them plus another player like Avi or a pitching prospect like Fulmer to get it done....to beat teams like the Cubs who will offer up a substantial package of prospects/players to get Machado.

White Sox select Nick Madrigal with 4th overall pick

If Hostetler implied or rather meant exactly what he said, he probably should have selected Kelenic. 3-4 years? Come on. We need a third basemen with power in the next year or two. We can't wait 3-4 years to play musical chairs with Moncada, Anderson and Madrigal in the infield. "Who's on second" is now the Sox version of" who's on first." -
White Sox select Nick Madrigal with 4th overall pick

Hostetler said it didn't matter what position Madrigal plays and in any event that decision will be up to Renteria and Hahn 3 or 4 years down the road. 3 or 4 years down the road? Not sure if he was serious about that timeline, but in any case, I do not think that view of the rebuild window is shared by most Sox fans. I see most posters most often referring to next year or the year after for the Sox to compete, not 3-4 years from now. https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/video/nick-hostetler-nick-madrigal-can-play-gold-glove-level -
I'm with the anti-Singer contingent. Kelenic would be a great pick.

I just got home and can't find this game on Hulu. Is this an MLB telecast?

I want to know who makes up these ridiculous rules. I would try to get them changed so that the players and the fans are best served.
-
They got taken by a superior team with superior starting pitching. We can clamor all we want about this or that but it is what it is. We suck badly this year, and it is so awful and even depressing to watch. No one likes getting their @sses handed to them while hearing about how players in the minors need to develop and might make it by 2020-something. That just makes me want to tune out even more.
-
For whatever reason. It seems that all his pitches are just a little weaker than they were a few months ago. Less zip on the fast ball and bite on the curve. That said, I recognize that he faced one of the best teams and was throwing to one of the worst catchers on a team that does not appear to be trying to win even if they really are trying t win. .

FS: Draft Prospect Profile: OF Jarred Kelenic, prep from Wisconsin
tray replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Thank you for posting this player profile. I am easily impressed by these prospect videos so I would not be of much value in the Sox war room. I hope Kellenic gets a good look by the Sox. This kid has some Mickey Mantle in his swing. He must have extremely strong forearms and wrists to generate that kind of exit velocity. -
Fulmer has not shown very much improvement since he was Drafted. The trajectory of his development is a flat line, not an upward slope. At times, he tends to look better than he is, retiring hitters by being wild in and out of the strike zone. He has a chance to make it, but the window for major league players is a small one, and his window is partially closed already.

Draft Profile: 2B Nick Madrigal, Oregon State
tray replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
I was trying to be facetious with Harry Chappas..but the plain fact is that MLB does not have too many short guys who can hit for power and average. They are relatively rare. I do not entirely trust the mock Drafts. Even the top ten have really changed over just the past few months. And remember Seth Beer? Or Nander de Sedas? I'd take Nolan Gorman in a heartbeat. Maybe I'm wrong, but understand that I just want the Sox to get a game changer type player in the First Round and that hasn't happened for several years.. 2011 Keenyn Walker 2012 Courtney Hawkins 2013 Tim Anderson 2014 Carlos Rodon 2015 Carson Fulmer 2016 Zack Collins 2016 Zack Burdi 2017 Jake Burger We need to score big time in the first round this year and next. Not sure a diminutive second basemen is what is needed. Has he hit for power with a wood bat? A lot of the College guys end up being Punch and Judy aluminum bat wackers who do not do well against ML pitching with a wood bat. -
Draft Profile: 2B Nick Madrigal, Oregon State
tray replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
I do not want Madrigal over some of the prep infield talent for a few reasons. First, I don't think Madrigal has the upside potential that the Sox are finally trying to hit on with their first round pick. Second, the Sox have indicated that they want to start Drafting younger players so that their talent pool is more balanced age-wise. Third, there are some absolutely great prep infielders with potentially high upside available. Fourth, let Tim Anderson have another year or two pan out a SS. If he does not improve defensively, then you have a young player in the minors who has had a few seasons to prepare. Fifth, I think the chances that a diminutive player like Madrigal can become a star like Altuve or Pedroia or even Adam Eaton, belies the plain fact that those players are very much exceptions to the rule. Sixth. We already tried the little guy with Harry Chappas several decades ago. -
Hindsight means nothing. What I want to know now is how this hot mess can be turned into a respectable team for the rest of this season....a team that fans will pay to see and spend time to watch on TV. If they can't then maybe turn to some Bill Veeck style promotional antics. Maybe get a midget to lead-off or blow up some country music CD's in Center field. And maybe it is time to let Jason Benetti and Steve Stone go. This ugly losing baseball deserves the kind of sarcastic tone that the late Harry Carey and Jimmy Piersall employed during the 1970's or the self deprecating style of Bob Uecker. The candyazzz approach to losing ugly from the management and from the announcers isn't working ...and it's only the middle of May.

How valuable is one year of player control considering that eventually you are going to have to decide whether or not to sign a player to a long term deal? Is it wise to have several of our top prospects s begin their service time in any one year or years (which means that they would come up at the same time) ? You would not want two or three star players wanting huge long term deals or choosing free agency at the same time. Maybe the rules have to be changed regarding service time.
-
The Sox made some miscalculations in evaluating existing pitching and position player talent on the way to forming the 25 man roster to start the season. They thought many of these guys would be better than they have shown us thus far. Now, if several players are deemed to be under performing for an extended period of time, then the Manager has to take responsibility, or the front office, or whoever is making player personnel decisions.
-
The Sox are trying to keep the team respectable, which is understandable. The fan base can become demoralized with too many losses and some of us are there already. My question is this: Should the Sox use fringey major league talent to fill-out the roster (Engel , Delmonico, Narvaez, Trayce Thompson, Davidson, Palka..) ? Or should they start replacing some of the marginal talent with unproven young prospects that might have initial failure but would provide more interest to fans ? If prospects are "not ready" maybe they should be told - "get your shoes on , you're goin' in." Baptism by fire or what have you.

"Low baseball IQ" is something that we should probably stay away from when discussing a black athlete, even if we think someone is as dumb as a box of rocks. Having said that, there is no denying that Anderson makes too many errors. So what is Renteria or Sox coaching staff doing to address this? I get frustrated by TA's defensive technique on ground balls. His footwork often does not get him to where he needs to be to catch and then transition into throwing with balance and accuracy. He almost never uses two hands to catch a grounder, even when that looks like the safest and most reliable means. Can't the Sox promote Omar Vizquel to bench coach on the major league team so he can teach players how to catch and throw and focus in on their job? If TA doesn't work out, the Sox might consider taking a SS or third basemen in the first round of this years Draft, although I think the top few prospects will be high school players. Another option, is to pursue Machado in trade (then sign him to a long term deal) or bid for him in free agency after the season. TA reminds me of Marcus Semien in some respects. He can hit in clutch situations, but he also can make key errors on routine plays. If he doesn't cut it at SS, maybe he should be traded because our minor league teams are stacked with OF talent. As far as I am concerned you can write in Luis Robert for CF and that might be sooner than expected.

The Jason Benetti and Sox Announcing Thread
tray replied to chitownsportsfan's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I liked Hawk and Wimpy. I always thought Stone liked the Cubs better and that he would have been more comfortable staying on the North side. Benetti? The nerdish look and routine just doesn't work for me.. Sox Math, the play shelf, pandering to Stone, the oddly configured straight man/funny man 9 inning comedy team. And God forbid you go too hard on Benny because he is handicapped. But that isn'y what this is about. He just doesn't cut it and cannot fill the shoes of Harry and Hawk who came before him. One thing that hasn't been discussed is the antipathy for the Cubs that both Hawk and Harry had as Sox announcers (yes, Harry used to wail on the Cubs). Sox fans loved that. Cub/Sox in Chicago is like the Hatfields and McCoys, Republican v. Democrat, Religious vs Agnostic. Right or wrong you take a side and that's pretty much it. Anyway, let's see what happens after a full season. Maybe people will get used to Benet and Stone's shtick. On the other hand maybe their routine will wear on fans, diminish fan interest, reduce ticket sales and advertising revenue, etc. That is what would make it obvious to ownership that it is time for a change. -
The two games were fun to watch despite Benetti. KC looks like they are destined for last place, not us. KC is a lifeless team with a depressed fan base and a horrible bullpen that will only demoralize the team further when they fail to close out games. IMHO we need a Closer and we need Eloy in the line-up. And we need Rodon in the rotation because at least one of our current starters is probably not going to hack it.
