Official 6/11/16 Royals @ White Sox Gamethread
tray replied to clyons's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 11, 2016 -> 08:53 PM) 31,183 in attendance. Not the greatest weekend, +30K performance (seems that's the norm more often than not the last 5 years). There is no point belaboring the attendance figures. That is not going to change for a variety of reasons many of which go beyond the performance of the team or the popularity of the team in the Chicago area. -

I would not sign Braun because of PEDS, lying about PEDS, and the possibility that he uses again. Zach Collins may have eliminated the need for a long term solution at catcher so I would not bother with Lucroy. Realistically there may just be too many holes to fill this season considering the talent that is or will become available in the market, the budget for player contracts, and a shallow pool of minor league talent to draw from. It may well be time to start looking toward next season. -

Maybe this is far fetched but I suppose that it is at least possible that the Anderson move might also serve as a predicate for a trade. i.e., Saladino or Anderson for a player like Josh Reddick, Cargo, etc. So if Anderson comes up and show great potential right off the bat, it might behoove the Sox in that way as well. Consider how Marcus Semien played at SS after being traded to the A's. Even Beane is probably spooked about trading for a guy who has not proven himself at the major league level. Under similar logic, maybe the Sox spent 27 million too fast on Shields before determining that he still had enough gas left in the tank..

Cub fans hate Hawk so it is hard to take criticism of him seriously. Hawk will be a Hall of Fame announcer whose unique style has added greatly to the Sox fans enjoyment of the broadcasts for many years. As far as Benetti, what is the point of having him in the booth when he does not have a good understanding of the game? Why can't he try to stick to baseball rather than veering off into trivia, trite jokes and annoying back and forth with Stone about personal habits and preferences? Benetti is the emobidment of the Peter principle. It is annoying listening to him anymore.

i hope Rodon 's condition is not serious. That would really jazz up our rotation. I don't get Hahn's comment on Tim Anderson. Does he mean that he has to stay there the rest of this season or that he paid his dues and is now ready to come up?

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 5, 2016 -> 04:20 PM) NO! That's the problem! "White Sox ties" doth not automatically a great manager make! Stop with that nonsense already. Look at the Cubs. Just a few years ago they said "no thank you" to one of the greatest Cubs of all time in Ryne Sandberg to be their manager, and instead looked for whom they felt was the best qualified against far more important criteria than simply history with the franchise. That approach eventually landed them Renteria and Maddon. Now that is a sound approach to operating a MLB franchise. Governing solely from some silly loyalty program is not. Ozzie worked out well if you remember 2005. As far as the Ricketts/Ameritrade approach, they got lucky getting Rizzo, Bryant and trading for Arrietta , now it's all about trying to buy a world series. It would be funny if they don't win it with those guys.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 4, 2016 -> 09:15 PM) Hahn mentioned in Dan Hayes' column the potential to receive a comp pick if Shields opts-out. Does he know something about the new CBA that we don't? I don't think they are eligible for a comp pick because he wasn't on the team for a full season. No understanding this.. Do you have a link to the rule?

Momentum was lost during an extended run against American League teams with powerful line-ups, excellent starting pitchers, and in some cases dominant bullpen arms. But what was lost lost by the Sox was more than simply momentum. Close competitive games against excellent line-ups forced Ventura to deploy a bullpen that was ill prepared for extended outings and repeated use in high leverage situations. That in turn resulted in losing several games where teams came back in late innings to win. The schedule just kept exposing this as we faced Texas, Toronto, Boston, Baltimore, the Yankees.. Compare the Cubs schedule during the same time frame against team like the Reds , the Pirates, the Phillies , Padres etc.. Kicking the azzes of those teams allowed starters to pitch deeper into games. The bullpen in turn, was not needed often in high leverage situations, and confidence and momentum built. So I would say the Sox tried mightily to get off to a great start, but a very grueling schedule against tough teams, some bad luck, and a shallow bullpen have turned momentum against the team. At this point I am not sure how that gets turned around. The team seems to lack confidence offensively. The rotation only provides decent startswhen Sale or Q are pitching and the bullpen appears to be in tatters. History provides no solace. What might help would be a trade or two to bring in a pitcher and a hitter and maybe lose a few of the guys who have been a drag. Robin isn't going anywhere until after the season, or until the Sox have played themselves out of contention, which may not be that far off.

Being that the uniform is only being worn to honor the Negro League, I am not certain what the point is in criticizing it.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 2, 2016 -> 06:48 PM) Yeah, but with Reddick being one of the few "impact bats" available in the trade market...Beane's going to drive a very hard bargain. So how much are you willing to give up for a rental player that doesn't come with a compensation pick attached? You're right, since he is only a rental, I don't think it would be worth trading for him. If there was any way to approach his agent and discuss what he would agree to (in terms of Contract duration and amount) before completing a trade, then that would be different.
-
Josh Reddick. Fits in personality wise with guys like his old teammate Brent Lawrie as well as being a very good outfielder and LH bat. Beane hasn't made him an offer and probably intends on trading him.

Latos comes at hitters with all kinds and colors of body parts. He often works outside the strike zone but when he keeps his walks down, he gets more swings and misses than Gonzales. My thinking is that Latos is our no.4 and Gonzales is a more temporary solution at the no.5. spot. I would also forget about Shields. He's a lazy and very rich bum. He looks like he has been living the good life outside baseball with his millions. He packed on some weight and grew a nice gut and developed a nonchalant attitude about pitching. Ho-hum I got torched again.
-
John Jay is not what we need. What we need is what a lot of teams could use - more home runs. Nice to see Saladino take one out to win a ball game. One shot like that can turn a game around and change the attitude of the team after a long losing streak. Shields? I don't want a guy like who has been guaranteed millions and is now on cruise control. The Padres are right. This guy is emblematic of what is wrong with giving players large multi-million dollar Contracts. (John Danks agrees).
-
One reason that teams don't continue to shuffle in minor league players to see if they can cut it is that once promoted, players start to acquire rights as member of a major league roster - not only league minimum salary, but also healthcare and pension benefits. I'm not sure how much that applies to the current players we have but I would like to see Jason Coats and Danny Hayes brought up and Shuck and Sands sent down or released. I would also like to see Tim Anderson brought up and Rollins traded or released. Again, there are a lot of financial considerations in making moves like that, which is why we don't see them made more often.
-
The Sox are never going to take on Shield's backloaded Contract (over $50 Million left for 2016, 2017, 2018 and a buy out) AND throw in any top prospect in the deal. The Sox are on the hook for $15 million to pay Danks for sitting at home this year. Like Danks, Shields has lost velocity on his fastball and that usually translates into loss of effectiveness with off-speed pitches. He would help at the back of the rotation, but not for 50 million and prospects.

QUOTE (Tony @ May 25, 2016 -> 12:09 PM) I'm more offended you're still using Yahoo! to do searches. Yahoo is my home page. Again, I was not amused by this hack or the portrayal of Sox fans as trailer trash.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 25, 2016 -> 07:52 AM) Ventura doesn't send him out there because he thinks he will turn it around. He's out there strictly to handle the pitching staff. I think he has failed miserably in that regard as well. I can think back on several pitches he called for in key situations during this losing streak, which coincided pretty much with when Avila came off the DL. And never forget, "handling the pitching staff" is an excuse that wer were given as to why Flowers was here for years on end. Avila appears to be worse than Flowers in every metric.
-
Avi is quickly burning through his last few chances to remain on the 25 man roster. That's too bad but realistically, the Sox have known that they would need a Left Hand bat, preferably one that could at least platoon at DH. I am more concerned with Alex Avila's struggles because DH is easier to replace than catcher. . Navarro isn't much better but in a clutch situation, I'd rather have Navarro up instead of Avila. Ventura keeps sending Avila out there thinking he will turn it around. Maybe he is right. In any case, those two spots in the batting order ( catcher and DH) present a similar problem to the one we had last year with Flowers and El Roach . Tonight's game might get rained out. If it does, we lost 2/3, and if it doesn't and we lose 3/4, how many series will that we make that we have lost since we started tanking? It's been painful watching the team struggle like this. I only hope they turn it around, because 4th place is well within sight now.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 25, 2016 -> 01:34 AM) The Chicago White Sox are an American trailer trash professional baseball team based on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois. The White Sox are members of the American League (AL) Central division in Major... wikipedia.org Just have to laugh. It obviously doesn't show up on the wikipedia main page. What difference does that make? This was a hack by a cubf--- that I did not find amusing.

Can someone alert Yahoo to take the very offensive description off the Yahoo search page for the White Sox ? Whoever hacked that page is a loser and should have their internet privileges revoked.

Lots of Managerialand coaching errors and they pile up.... McEwing let us get run out of a big inning, bases loaded , no outs, by sending Melky on a shallow line drive. Sanchez hit the ball hard on his previous at bat but yea, I would have used Saladino. Robin lacks that feel for the game that successful Managers have. -

Bad feeling about this one after giving up 3 in the 9th. Ventura should have learned that Albers should not be in there in high leverage situations. Really sad if this key game in the season gets thrown away.
