  1. QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 22, 2017 -> 05:52 PM)
    Sox would be lucky to get ONE of Alcantara, Bader, Perez or O'Neill...and a low level prospect IMO. I understand you ask...but if I'm the Cards I'd laugh at wanting a combination of top 10 prospects. It's just extremely unlikely. Kelly and Reyes are pipedreams...

    Zero chance I deal Avi then. Baseball America doesn't have Alcantara in their top 10 and O'Neill has fallen out of most top 100 lists. Bader is having a good year but only Pipeline really values him.

    You're not gonna get a 26 year old OF with a 128 wRC+, league average defense and 2.5 years of control for that. The Cards just traded a soft-tossing lefty that projects as a #5 starter or middle reliever for O'Neill.

    Even with BABIP regression he's a likely 3 WAR guy this year. His WAR per game pace is as good or better than JD Martinez (who would've returned a lot if he weren't a rental), Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, and is comparable to Marcell Ozuna.

    Would you trade Marcell Ozuna for one of those guys? Absolutely not.

  2. Don't mind the idea since we could take on payroll. But zero chance I give up anything significant for him.

    Stanton is making so much money that you could basically take his contract on for free or an extremely minimal return. There's no surplus value in that contract. And he's good, but he's not THAT good.

    $25 million a year on average for a guy pacing 3-4 WAR. And will decline throughout the life of it.

  3. They're a team that probably should've taken a step back and re-built, but they've gotten expensive trying to augment the roster and retain what they've got. I think they've either got to really commit and take a hit on prospects or sell hard.

    They're a bit like the Tigers where they can't do a full tear down because they're too expensive. Better farm system but stuck with some contracts that will be tough to move (Yadi, Fowler, Carpenter, some of the pitchers). Contracts themselves aren't that bad but not much surplus value.

    The problem they also have is their farm strengths are kinda blocked. Reyes will be great but the rotation isn't the problem. Kelly looks awesome but Yadi isn't going anywhere. And they've got an OF logjam.

    Which I why I think they'll sell out and get a bat.

  4. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 21, 2017 -> 12:20 PM)
    But regardless of how much the Mariners may have soured on O'Neill, it's still puzzling that they couldn't have gotten a better return, especially from us.

    Definitely agree on that. Though people are probably a bit too low on Gonzalez.

    Either way, feels unnecessary for the Cards unless they're making another move. 40 man crunch will be a big problem otherwise.

  5. Yeah I don't understand the concern on Rutherford. Probably a product of everyone expecting him to fly through the system after mashing rookie ball. Eaton didn't hit a single home run his senior year in college! And flashed none at the lower levels.

    Dude literally just turned 20, and he's flashing good OBP and contact skills. Power is always the last skill to develop, we've seen it time and time again.

  6. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jul 21, 2017 -> 07:34 AM)
    MLB pipeline states; "He isn't very fluid, which detracts from his average arm strength, and his receiving and blocking skills are spotty".

    I don't understand how a guy who doesn't have quick feet and very strong, accurate arm, can throw out 40% of base stealers.

    He has also been working very hard on pitch framing and is apparently making very good progress there. You can see why the Sox believe he has good potential to stick, behind the plate.

    Collins leads the team in walks, with 63 and therefore his OBP is a very respectable .363. There's also not much to complain about his .424 slugging %. If he becomes a good defensive catcher, I'd be very happy with a left handed power hitter, with a good eye. I also suspect that

    he will improve his contact rate, and get his average up. You can add me to the list of those who think that it's way too earlier to be very discouraged over his progress.

    Pipeline has gotten better but the info can be pretty stale. He changed his footwork and mechanics this offseason and focused on getting lighter on his feet.

  7. Look, I really like Yolmer too. But his trade value isn't going to improve if he's our backup middle infield guy. What makes him hard to give up - youth and control - also give him value right now over rental players.

    His peak value is a glove-first 2B with some bat value. Not as a part time or utility piece. Yes, he's got some position versatility. But his bat isn't going to play up well at 3B or even a corner OF spot.

    Edit: he's especially redundant when we've got a potential super-utility guy in Leury, who can play basically anywhere.

    Now, if you're worried about Tim and want to hold onto Yolmer in case he's the better long-term option? Now I see your argument.

  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 01:18 PM)
    I think Angels this is a move they could pull off. Modest cost but they just released Espinoza and Sanchez provides every bit as much defensive value.

    But I'd like to keep Yolmer.

    Beat me to it! If Yolmer doesn't end up on the Angels that franchise is clueless. Gives them a young, solid 2B with team control. They've got literally nobody in the pipeline otherwise.

    That system is garbage but they don't seem inclined to rebuild anytime soon and this would be a play for now and the future.

  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 20, 2017 -> 08:19 AM)
    I don't think this is a fair way to approach these deals.

    If Rutherford busts, but Clarkin turns into a 5th starter, this is a big win?

    From a pure value standpoint, 6 years of control on a solid back end starter is pretty significant. Look at how much people are paying back end arms on the FA market. And we also shed a lot of $$ over the next few years between DRob's salary and Kahnle's arbitration raises.

    Very few of us would be happy with that return, but it's not as far off as it seems.

  10. QUOTE (KnightsOnMintSt @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 03:48 PM)
    Wouldn't be surprised to see Jimenez move to AA. Would be awesome to see him make that jump

    Fisher needs some time in High-A still. One thing I love about Fisher that I never see talked about, is that he is so fast. He fly's down the line.

    Surprised that Rutherford is starting Kannapolis.

    Really? He was a former catcher and was supposed to be athletically limited so that's good to hear. That was one of his big draft knocks.

  11. Looks like Rutherford will go to A ball. Seriously where are they going to put everyone? Outside of a Jimenez promotion to AA (or Fisher in a quick move) I can't imagine who's going to go up to make room.

    Have to imagine Micker might be promoted soon? Once A+ clears up a bit.

  12. QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 11:48 AM)
    I am not in the belief that Rick is going to just give anyone away in this rebuild. Now I know some might not agree with that LOL

    I wouldnt put it past Rick to get a top 100 at the very bottom type guy for Swarzak. Someone is going to get desperate after they strike out landing the other guys.

    Might not be a bad guy to hold onto right up until the deadline. Get him some closing opportunities (if he gets any with this new roster lol) and see if you can leverage a desperate team.

  13. Kannapolis was actually on MiLB.tv the other day and I got to watch him bat a few times.

    His swing looks light years better, and he's picked up serious bat speed. Such better balance and set up. Approach looked better too even though he K'd twice. Saw him lay off a few tough breaking balls and work the count well.

    He's been my favorite prospect to track this year. You can really see the physical gifts start to show through, and he's going to be a tremendous power threat if he can harness it.

  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 07:47 AM)
    We are stopping Cubs by cancelling out Q for WS matchup, haha.

    Most NY Yankees fans don't even believe they will make playoffs after this deal, even...wanted another starting pitcher instead.

    I think they'll still add a starter. Rutherford was the only guy of value they lost, still think they could build a package for a rental and not give up Torres/Frazier.

  15. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 07:37 AM)
    This is essentially the same question as they just answered in re: Kahnle, right?

    If someone wanted say, Avi and Swarzak, I suspect we'd move him for a guy in the top 30 or so?

    Sounds about right. Only teams I can think of with those needs:

    Rockies

    Cardinals

    Dodgers? Seems like a stretch

  16. QUOTE (Soxnfins @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 06:31 AM)
    I mean maybe Garcia can fetch the same/a tad more than JD Martinez? Not sure. He's got age on his side though, even though Martinez will only be 30 in August. Avi just turned 26 a little over a month ago and has 2 1/2 more years of control, whereas JD is a FA at the end of the year.

    There's no chance I move Avi if the return is anything like that Tigers deal. They just didn't get much value.

    Might as well hold onto Avi for that and hope there's more of a market later - or see if he can force his way into our long-term plans.

  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 19, 2017 -> 07:12 AM)
    I have a hard time believing there is a worthwhile market for him, given what we heard yesterday in re: position players after the JD Martinez trade, but obviously the situations are different.

    Yeah same. Though the extra control is certainly big. Plus Avi has been roughly the same player on a WAR pace (I know he's not the same hitter), and some team might think he's only going to get better.
