  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 03:44 PM) So they basically signed 2-5 at slot value given Fry and Austin combining to equal their 3-4 slots now. I find it hard to imagine a situation where the Sox sign Montes de Oca. As for Rodon, it would seem he will be getting in the 6 million range if he signs. If Rodon signs in the 6 mil range we can throw close to $600,000 at Montes de Oca (assuming Ziznewski is way under slot which he better be and Clark and Jarvis are basically at slot). I doubt that gets it done but it should at least make it a little interesting.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 1m The @WhiteSox announced several signings...3rd-rder Jace Fry gets $760k (value at 77 = $726k). Ore St LHP, strikes w/3 pitches. @MLBDraft I'm really surprised we went over slot with Fry (even though it wasn't by much).
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) Seriously, any concern of Rodon not signing is completely unwarranted. There is a 99.999% chance he is signing. Agreed, the only real thing of interest is to see if he signs at a low enough amount that will allow the Sox to make a real run at signing Montes De Oca.
  4. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 12:31 PM) I was hoping Austin would have signed for less than he did. I am not sure we can assume Jarvis will sign for slot. Ziznewski made a (perhaps) silly mistake by saying he thought he was going to be drafted on day three. Either way, he'll be way underslot. Obviously this is all being appropriated for both/either Rodon and/or Montas de Oca. Stealing Montas de Oca ceiling would really be the cherry on top of a great draft at face value. I am sure the Sox are really selling themselves to this kid's advisors. What's a better a organization for this kid's history? I am just surprised the Sox didn't take more seniors in the latter half of the first round. That's a strategy we employed last year and it netted us Michalczewski and this year there was a serious run of seniors in the 7-10 rounds. Hopefully that means the Sox really like that players they nabbed at the end of day two. I don't think we can assume Jarvis signed right at slot but with how quickly he signed it seems highly unlikely it was for much above slot.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) It isn't about the money. Well if it is about respecting Selig and the slot suggestions it is even dumber since the rules expressly allow you to go 5% over without being penalized other than monetarily.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) The Sox won't go over. They never go over, ever since slotting came into existance. It would be incredibly foolish not to go over if it meant we could sign Montes De Oca. I know it isn't our money but you are talking about a few hundred thousand dollar fine to sign a premium talent.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) So there's an extra $267,540 to be used for either Rodon or the 13/14th round pitcher. It is safe to assume we will get big savings from Ziznewski as well. I would guess Clark is at slot or right around it. No idea with Jarvis but with how quickly he signed I would assume he was also at slot or just above it since the Sox wouldn't have gone much above slot for a 10th rounder that quickly.
  8. The Heat as a team actually shot the ball incredibly well. LeBron shooting more wasn't really the answer although his turnovers hurt them a lot yesterday. The real issue for the Heat is that you simply aren't going to win when the other team shoots 60% from the floor, 45% on 20 3 attempts and gets to the line 32 times while making over 80%.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 10, 2014 -> 02:48 PM) Also worth noting, if we take my above scenario, while signing Rodon to a slot deal, that would mean we could offer $514,200 to De Oca without going over the teams allotment, and $989,684 without losing a draft pick. If Rodon signs at $6,000,000 exactly, those numbers drop to $235,700 and $611,184 respectively. It is unlikely but if the Sox can get to that second number (with Rodon at slot) De Oca would be absolutely insane to pass on that. Frankly anything $750,000 and above he would be crazy to pass since he would have to stay healthy and still pitch well enough in college to go in the first two rounds to get a bigger bonus than that.
  10. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 10:17 PM) But his bat would kill us He could be used as a defensive replacement. It isn't like Sierra can hit at all anyways.
  11. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) Same question I asked in the draft thread: if the White Sox were genuinely confident of getting him signed, why not take him in the 11th round instead of the 14th? Seems to me it's more of a "well we'll take him here in the unlikely event we have enough to turn his head", rather than a genuine plan with a good chance of success. They probably didn't know exactly how much they were going to have to play with. Without knowing what Rodon and Adams were going to sign for you really have no idea what you will be able to offer Montes and getting those guys in the fold is clearly the priority.
  12. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:48 PM) I agree with you, but it may not be what he's thinking or what people are whispering into his ear. It isn't an easy decision, but he would both have to stay healthy and be really really good at Missouri for staying in school to be worth it.
  13. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:54 PM) I don't know even about him to know if he is worth it or not. If he is currently ranked the #32 best pick, he is a first round talent. He is a high school kid who has had Tommy John surgery already. There is huge upside there but you don't forfeit a first round pick that could end up being a really high pick (we still don't know how this season is going to go) to sign him.
  14. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:39 PM) I wonder if the Sox would be willing to forfeit a draft pick next year if they think he is that good? If they think he is a first round talent, it may be worth it to sign Rodon, Adam and him. No way do you forfeit your 2015 first round pick to sign this kid. Especially since there is a chance that pick winds up in the top 10 again.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) IIRC, it is more like $475k It is 5% of $9.5 million. I thought I saw we had $9.8 but didn't check it myself. In that case we could offer him about $575,000 since the first $100,000 doesn't count against the pool. That $15k probably wouldn't change much either way. If the Sox are below slot at all after signing the first 10 picks they are going to be able to put together a package that is very tough for Montes to pass up on. Now with having to sign Rodon and Adams that probably isn't likely but you never know.
  16. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 01:22 PM) Not many scouts would of batted an eye if he was selected in the 2nd round and those slot values ranged from 1 to 1.5 million. And that's him coming off of TJ surgery, if he preforms well in college he could be top 10 pick in the 2017 draft. It might be half a million dollars now, but it could be 2-4 million dollars in a couple years and the fun and excitement of college. One more arm injury and he could also be looking at a signing bonus of about $5,000.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 12:56 PM) LOL. In all seriousness, if the Sox scrape together half a million dollars, plus a full ride, it will be interesting to see what he does. If we come in exactly at slot for the first 10 picks and are willing to pay the tax the Sox can offer him about $590,000 which would put him at about the middle of the third round in terms of bonus. That will be really tough for a guy who has already had Tommy John once to turn down. He would basically be having to bet that he actually stays healthy for the next 3 years and that he pitches well enough to get taken in the first two rounds.
  18. Any rumors as to what Jarvis signed for? I have to imagine it was right around slot because there is no way they went much above slot for a 10th round pick before the Rodon and Adams deals were taken care of.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 09:54 PM) The Spurs are not going to win in Miami. This is just like the Indy series. These teams beat the Heat once and don't have the same WTW the second game, then before you know it, it's a crucial split. Manu played like s*** the last 2-3 minutes. Miami is going to bring it back to S.A. up 3-1. I wouldn't discount a Miami win in game Five, but Spurs will likely salvage game five, then Miami wraps it up at home. Once again, the genius Gregg Popovich shows he's just like any other coach. Scott Brooks would have gotten fried for losing this game down the stretch. Players win games. Bosh hit the huge shot; LeBron was great on both ends. Heat turned it up on defense in crunch time. Result a victory. Lol at the will to win being the problem for teams against the Heat.
  20. Sierra blows, more bad defense leading to runs.
  21. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 7, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) I know the Sox will probably be tapped out after Rodon and Spencer but if I'm De Oca, I don't think pitching in college is the best move with 1 TJS already under my belt. He's really going to take the chance that he will be healthy for the next 3 years, pitching for free? F that. I'd go pro. It will really depend on what the Sox have left in their pool after the first 10 picks. They can go 5% over their pool without losing a pick and I believe their pool is about 9.8 million which means they have about $490,000 on top of that to play with. If their first 10 picks come in at or about slot and the Sox can offer him $500,000+ he will have a tough decision to make. And if the Sox are below slot after first 10 picks (unlikely but not impossible) then they will be able to make him a pretty good offer.
  22. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 7, 2014 -> 12:51 PM) Him having TJ his junior year is definitely a negotiating tactic for the Sox. What other team can keep pitchers healthy and help supplement their fastball better than the Sox? I'm not expecting him to sign but the Sox have a better chance than most if the kids at least considering going pro. Hopefully we have money left in the pool to exceed $100,000 by a fair amount.
  23. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 7, 2014 -> 12:11 PM) 7th best prospect out of Oklahoma. Number 8 Big 12 prospect coming into the season Looks like he was 2nd in the Big 12 in home runs this year and 3rd in doubles. Good numbers all around really.
  24. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 5, 2014 -> 11:41 PM) So I imagine the FO is ecstatic right now? I know everyone loves Reetz but his swing left-handed isn't pretty. You can definitely tell he's a natural righty. I do like the idea and would be happy with the pick but at some point we have to start scaling back to afford Rodon and Adams. Probably, but we don't really know how those negotiations are going or whether those guys are definitely going to go for above slot.
