QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 03:07 PM) I'm down with Babers. He's likely a complete disaster, which is to say he's not any worse than what we have now. And if he does end up successful, I think it would be in a very big way. Some would view it as a risky hire but is there really such thing as a risky hire when your program is this bad? Take a chance on a guy who brings in a great offensive system and who could potentially do a great job here. -

The other thing to consider is Mike Thomas has made 5 hires at the BCS level. Mick Cronin, Brian Kelly, Butch Jones, John Groce and Beckman. It is early with Groce but he clearly looks like at least a solid hire and that was a potential home run. Brian Kelly and Butch Jones were obviously grand slam hires for Cincinnati. Cronin has been solid. He clearly knows how to hire successful coaches and just happened to blow it with Beckman after his top choice fell through. It happens. -

QUOTE (gatnom @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 02:47 PM) I wouldn't be entirely opposed to getting another coach. I just wonder who would want to take on an all but shattered program, and perhaps more importantly would I even want them as a head coach? I mean we're definitely not in better shape than we were last coaching search, and we didn't exactly get our pick of the litter. I think Beckman can get us to mediocre, or at least on the path to it, given one more year. Tons of coaches at the FCS level would take this job. You think guys like the North Dakota St. coach who has built a dominant program at that level are going to pass up 4 or 5 times their current salary? Sure, you might have someone do that but you offer a guy making $200 OR $300 1.5 million and they are going to take it. How about Dino Babers from Eastern Illinois? He is black which would take care of the issue that Illinois has never had a black head coach for football and basketball, he coached under Art Briles at Baylor and his offense is scoring an incredible amount of points right now. Illinois' best bet is to find an innovative offensive mind. You don't need to hire a guy who is currently a head coach at the FBS level to find that guy. -

QUOTE (gatnom @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 02:36 PM) Abysmal play calling and game management after that PSU fumble. Still think firing Beckman is a bad idea right now even if he isn't the answer long term. Classic Scheelhaase. Again, once you know you have the wrong coach get rid of him as quick as possible. There are good coaches all over the place, go out and find one. And you don't have to look in traditional places. Go find the most innovative offensive coach in FCS and bring him in. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 2, 2013 -> 02:34 PM) Losing was the best possible outcome. Time to fire Beckman. Very true, just so hard to root for losses at the college level (even when recognizing its for the best like at the end of the Weber era). -

Lol at Illinois football. Please fire Beckman tomorrow. 3rd and long and PSU has to throw and you have your two incredibly slow LBs on the field in coverage? Just awful. And lol at that throw by Scheelhaase. 4 year starter who still makes ridiculously stupid decisions all the time. -

The first 5 minutes of this game was so Illinois football it is just comical at this point. Moving the ball easily against PSU and your 4th year starting QB misses a wide open receiver for a TD and then a couple plays later makes a bad throw for an interception. Then you get a stop that should have forced a fg for PSU and your 4th year star linebacker gets a stupid hands to the face penalty. Awesome. It just makes me laugh at this point. -

Alexander down to KU, Illinois, DePaul and Memphis. I'm starting to really think Alexander to Illinois happens. I think Okafor and Jones go to KU and Alexander pulls the trigger for Illinois. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) Yes, it is absolutely meaningless. Improving on a 2-10 team that should never have been 2-10 is meaningless. It's not an argument for Beckman and your followup questions are asking something different. My expectations were to be a remotely competitive team in a terrible Big Ten. We've since gone 0-3 losing on average by 28 points. Wow. Prior to the respectable start this is basically exactly what I was expecting actually. This team is easily the least talented team in the Big 10 other than Purdue. If Beckman would have had a decent season last year and recruiting hadn't fallen apart after the disastrous season this year wouldn't even bother me. This year was always going to be an absolute joke because of Zook's last few years of recruiting. The defense struggling as much as it did last year despite having 5 NFL players was simply inexcusable. And while the offense didn't have any talent the coaching on that side of the ball was also horrendous. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 29, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) I am all for mysteries and plot twists, but there was some things that just were wtf. The black oil...so it completely destroys and breaks down the engineers for the purpose of distributing their DNA, but turns the guy into a alien impregnator/raging frankenstein monster. And the massive facehugger...um why did it grow into the size of a rhinocerous in a room by itself. The engineer goes crazy when it wakes up from its billion year sleep. why? There are tons of little minute details that you can pick at, but the black oil purpose and reactions pissed me off the most. It was a big time Macguffin. It also didn't help that every character in the entire movie was horribly written. The main character's boyfriend gets depressed after finding proof of alien life because he wasn't able to talk to one of the engineers within a matter of hours? GTFO. The f***ing guy who designed the machines that mapped the ruins is the one who gets lost and not able to get back to the ship? The biologist who is afraid of a dead body suddenly has the courage to get near a clearly aggressive alien snake creature? Ugh. Just so awful on so many levels.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 11:55 AM) Can't wait for him to re-aggravate that groin injury to play in game 1. It would be great if the Bulls realize at some point that playing through nagging injuries during an NBA regular season is stupid. In college basketball, the NFL, etc where each regular season game has so much importance its different and guys need to play through those types of injuries. But in the NBA where the Bulls are getting a top 4 seed in the east basically no matter what and likely a 2 or 3 seed even if Noah misses a couple weeks there is just absolutely no reason to play if you are banged up. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) No. I don't think Alabama or the SEC has the pull this year. There is no LSU of past, and say the world becomes perfect and Mizzou wins out and beats Alabama, no way they leap 2 undefeateds in major conferences. Add in the fact that it's probably everyones dream to see FSU v. Oregon. The SEC wouldn't have the pull to jump over FSU or Oregon but there might be enough pull to jump OSU. I would suspect that OSU would get in but I could see people pushing for Alabama. -

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 28, 2013 -> 06:52 AM) BUT...BUT...KANSAS FIRED TURNER GILL AND HIRED CHARLIE WEIS!!! Both these terrible blog posts bring up that fact as if it has any meaning whatsoever. Turner Gill was awful, Weis is awful. Alright, who cares? We fire Beckman, the worst we can do is end up where we are now, not winning conference games and not being competitive. If we hire Weis, oh no, who cares. When you figure out you have the wrong guy, it's always best to move on as quickly as possible. This. If anything, a big part of the reason Illinois football is where its currently at is because of retaining coaches too long. Ron Turner won the Big 10, stopped recruiting and built a MAC level roster that Zook inherited. Zook should have been fired after 2009 when he somehow went 3-9 with a roster with a ton of NFL players and instead Ron Guenther decided to make a coach who's only redeeming quality is his recruiting essentially a figurehead and lame duck which resulted in Ron Turner level recruiting in 2010, 2011 and 2012 (pre-firing) and the fact that we have maybe 4 or 5 players from the 2010 and 2011 classes total that are legitimate Big 10 players. A real program fires Zook in 2009 and the new guy would have inherited a roster with a ton of talent and had a good chance to win right off the bat and build momentum. I hate Ron Guenther so f***ing much. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 08:20 PM) how is illinois' defensive coordinator still employed. just f***ing terrible He should have been fired for the performance of last year's defense. This defense would be awful if Nick Saban was coaching it. There isn't a single Big 10 caliber defensive lineman playing right now (a couple of the freshmen have a chance but they aren't ready yet), we have one legitimate Big 10 linebacker, although Monheim isn't awful, our safeties should be playing linebacker and we are trotting out a bunch of true freshmen at cornerback, only one of which was a pretty highly sought after recruit. This defense has as little talent as the teams at the end of the Turner era had. This is the product of not firing Zook after 2009 and him basically being a lame duck resulting in two horrendous recruiting classes in 2010 and 2011 that produced a grand total of one Big 10 level player on the defensive side of the ball. -

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 19, 2013 -> 08:28 AM) Same can be said for the Cardinals. Draft well and develop well. Easier said than done. But both teams have teams full of homegrown players and then supplement them with solid free agent signings. Management also has cohones. They let Pujols go so that 1/4 of their payroll was not tied to one player and look what they have done in the post-Pujols era. The Cardinals didn't really let Pujols go. They offered him a ten year deal at 22 mil per year. They just got lucky that the Angels offered Pujols even more money.
