QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 05:04 PM) Our hitters aren't catching up to the Verlander fastball so far. This is a strange game, as everyone seems to be in slow motion. Both teams just look dead at the plate -

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 05:00 PM) Nice AB, by OC. Dreaded sac bunt attempt? A bunt that was finally executed, and thanks to the field conditions actually results in a base hit as well. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 04:45 PM) Our offense is just sad. It's not just that they're not scoring runs, but they don't even come close to making solid contact. Why is Juan Uribe swinging at first pitch curve after a long AB by Swisher that resulted in a walk? It is Juan Uribe, do you really expect him to behave logically at the plate? -

QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) If we don't get these 2 games in, than we would only have to be up 2 games on the Twins to not have to play them, right? Each game the Twins play that we don't would only be .5 game each. My head hurts. We would have to be up 4 in the loss column to not have to play the 3 game series. -

QUOTE (daa84 @ Sep 13, 2008 -> 10:06 PM) especially with how bad the rest of the pac 10 looked today....couldnt believe that UCLA BYU game.....oregon really should have lost, and then cal is tripped up by a bad maryland team (who lost to middle tenn. state and barely beat flacco-less delaware) Seriously, how bad is Tennessee if they lost to that UCLA team? -

OSU just completely melting down right now. USC is just a much better team and even if OSU had Wells USC wins this game easily IMO. By the way Todd Boeckman just absolutely sucks. I know the O-Line hasn't performed well today, but that guy has no pocket presence, takes forever to get rid of the ball and once he gets hit he goes into a shell. -

Michigan looks awful. And for the Michigan fans on this board, why does Morgan Trent play? What an awful CB. Edit: And in typical fashion, as soon as I rip on a player he makes a big play. -

It really doesn't look there is any reason to not have started this game on time. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 10:50 PM) So what's your proposed lineup for tomorrow? Here's mine: OC Griffey Dye Thome AJP Ramirez Swisher Uribe Anderson I don't think either Owens or Wise can hit a 95 mph fastball. Those 9 should basically be playing everyday from this point on unless we are facing a tough lefty. There is really no reason Owens or Wise should be playing over Anderson.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 11:12 PM) AJ can't bunt. Yet every day in BP these guys plop down bunts. Why do they have to bunt as part of BP? Because they might be asked to bunt. I just told you in the exact same situation, Boston's swinging away resulted in a DP and we won that game. Their fans had to be saying what a moron their manager was for letting Pedroia swing away instead of bunt. I look at the big picture. Our team is in the hunt to win it despite a team with many many weaknesses. I credit the manager some for that success. He has reasons for every move he makes. He's a damn good manager. I did not like Bevington and some of the other hacks who couldn't put us in position to win a division. If a manager asks you to bunt, it should be in your repertoire to bunt. Didn't AJP play in the NL? How many bunts did he get down there. I'm sure it's in the stat books somewhere. I can guarantee you that no Boston fan would ever call their manager a moron for not having Pedroia bunt. Pedroia is an excellent hitter, why would you take the bat out of his hands. Sure in that situation he grounded into a DP but I'll give him the opportunity to swing away each and every time without question. You don't give away outs with a hitter of that caliber. It would be like asking Quentin to lay down a bunt. AJ played one season in the NL and had 2 sacrifice bunts. He has sucked at bunting this season so why put him in a position to fail? -
QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 10:51 PM) I guess that's where we differ. It makes no difference to me if we make the postseason and get routed or not make it at all. As far as the payroll stuff, making the playoffs and having revenue from one game won't make a difference if ownership really wants to cut payroll. If you make the postseason anything can happen. All it takes is the SP to be hot and you can make some noise.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 10:07 PM) What do you want me to say about Ozzie?? I haven't studied tonight's games, but when he brings in a reliever and that reliever gets shelled as has happened like that stiff KW brought in from the Royals ... it's Oz's fault? Bulls***. If he leaves in the starter and the starter gets ripped in the sixth, it's Oz's fault. If AJP can't get a bunt down, it's Oz's fault. Yeah it's Oz's fault cause he's the manager. I look at the big picture. He has this very questionable team in the hunt in September. We have no team speed at all. We have a suspect starting rotation that has overachieved (thanks in large part I'm sure to Oz and Cooper both). We still have a shaky bullpen except for Bobby. Aside from Bobby, that bullpen for the most part has been average to a little below average. What else do you want me to say?? That one game when Ozzie bunted AJP and they walked CQ and we didn't score, everybody blamed Ozzie. The very next inning, Boston didn't bunt in the exact same situation and the guy (Pedroia? somebody) hit into a DP. Oz is good. It isn't Ozzie's fault that AJ can't get a bunt down. It is his fault that he continually asks AJ to try to bunt when he clearly sucks at it. Part of a manager's job is to put their players in a position to succeed. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:27 PM) Agreed, and when we make trades to try and add speed, we end up lowering the talent level of the squad (Lee for Pods) That is the problem, you shouldn't be looking to add speed, but rather fundamentally sound hitters. Guys who hit line drives and make consistent contact. -

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:29 PM) This team needs diversity in the lineup. We need to sprinkle some guys who can hit line drives around to agument the power hitters. I agree with this. I would love to add some guys who hit line drives and are gap hitters who make consistent contact. Kenny needs to find a couple guys that are the happy medium between the s***ty fast slap hitter and the pure HR hitter. -

QUOTE (BearSox @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:23 PM) batting average isn't a determining factor either... but I'd take a guy who hits around .300 with a .320 OBP over the guy batting .230 with an OBP around .340 any day of the year. Depends on what their slugging percentage is IMO. If the guy hitting .300 has no pop whatsoever and the .230 guy has a lot of power I'll take the guy hitting .230. If the power is close than I agree with you though. -

QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:21 PM) OBP IS NOT THE SAME AS BATTING AVERAGE. He's just no good right now, .228 with a .600 on base isn't good enough. You have to be able to hit to be good. I know you are just making a point, but I would take a guy who hit .128 if he got on base at a .600 clip. -
