QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 04:32 PM) You apparently don't seem to care how many innings that a starter goes as long as he is good. I'm trying to say that there is a big difference between going 6 or 7 and going 8 or 9. If Carlos hadn't walked his 5 guys that game, his pitch count would have been lower, meaning he probably would have been able to go at least one more inning. When your bullpen sucks as bad as the Cubs' has for long stretches this year, that is important. Would you have trusted the pen the next day in a one run game? I know I wouldn't. That's why Prior going a little deeper was important. Obviously I'd rather have 1 or 0 runs allowed than 3, but I'd also rather have more innings from the guy if I can get them. Often times he isn't even there for the seventh. The point I'm trying to make is that even when Zambrano is on, he might only go 6 because often times he is effectively wild, while when Buehrle is on he'll go at least 7. Plus if Zambrano pitched like this in the AL where he doesn't have the luxary of a sure out in the pitcher, his numbers would suffer. God, I need to get off this topic. Zambrano has more starts of 8 innings or more than Buehrle this year. Zambrano has 12 and Buehrle has 10. Buehrle has 22 starts where he has pitched 7 innings or more. Zambrano has 21 such starts.

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 12:50 PM) Check out the game logs though. He comes up with some brutal starts, and racks up some monster pitch counts. 5 earned in 6 innings at Pit? 4 earned in 3 1/3 at Washington? 8 earned in 2 2/3 at Miluakee? For someone that supposedly has so much talent, he fails to make it through the 6th inning quite a bit. Buehrle does go 6 innings more often than Zambrano but I fail to see hot that makes him more consistent. 2003 season, games posting an ERA higher than 4.50. I considered 8 innings with 4 ER a quality start Zambrano 10 Buehrle 11 2004 Zambrano 7 Buehrle 10 2005 Zambrano 9 Buehrle 10 Didn't pitch 6 innings 2003 Zambrano 5 Buehrle 6 2004 Zambrano 2 Buehrle 1 2005 Zambrano 6 Buehrle 1 Starts allowing 5 or more earned runs 2003 Zambrano 6 Buehrle 8 plus 2 games where he allowed 5 or more runs total 2004 Zambrano 4 plus 1 5 total Buehrle 9 plus 1 10 total 2005 Zambrano 5 Buehrle 5 plus 5 other starts where he allowed 5 or more total runs Also, Innings per start 2003 Zambrano 6.69 Buehrle 6.57 2004 Zambrano 6.77 Buehrle 7 2005 Zambrano 6.77 Buehrle 7.16 Read into this what you will but I still think people are over stating Zambrano's inconsistency as well as Buehrle's consistency. Buehrle consistenly goes six innings, that doesn't make him a consistent pitcher.
-
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 12:31 PM) exactly. Plus Zambrano is so inconsistent. He goes through stretches where he is lights out and than stretches where he gets absolutley bombed. Buehrle at his worst will at least keep you in the game. I fail to see how Mark's any more consistent than Zambrano. Mark's monthly totals April 3.89 ERA, May 2.44, June .96, July 5.01, August 3.46, and September 4.97 Zambrano April 4.31, May 2.40, June 5.79, July 2.11, August 1.74, September 3.94 2004 Buehrle-April 5.93, May 1.58, June 5.79, July 2.58, August 5.35, and September 2.44 Zambrano April 3.55, May 1.71, June 2.86, July 3.44, August 3.61, September 1.01, and one start in October where he had a 7.94 ERA.

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 12:20 PM) You need to compensate for the difference between the NL and AL. In general, the ERA's in the AL are much higher than in the NL. Plus Zambrano gets gift outs and K's by pitching in the NL because of the pitchers hitting. Put Buehrle somewhere like Petco park and his ERA sinks to the mid 2's. Peavy is a stud, but Zambrano is way too inconsistent. That's true, but the post I was responding to said that nearly all of Mark's stats were better than Zambrano's.
-
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Sep 21, 2005 -> 11:06 AM) Buehrle is much better than zambrano. Almost all of his stats are better. He also pitches in the AL which is a tougher league to pitch in. Also I didn't put the mets on that list. Pedro might be the best SP in the NL right now. Right now i would take Buehrle over Peavy. Im a huge Peavy fan though. Actually, almost none of Buehrle's stats are better. Zambrano has lower BAA, OBPA, WHIP, more strikeouts, only one less wins, and a lower ERA. Peavy is a better pitcher than Mark without a doubt. The only reason I would possibly take Mark over Peavy is he throws more innings and is more durable. A healthy Peavy is better than Mark without a doubt though. Like I said, Mark would be a #1 starter for a lot of teams, but at this point in his career he isn't an ace.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Sep 20, 2005 -> 09:18 PM) I just don't feel this is the thread to be bumped at the moment. This isn't on Buehrle, we all knew Buehrle was done at that point of time. Some reason Ozzie didn't know though. Now that I've calmed down, I probably shouldn't have bumped this thread at the time, but Buehrle has to step up his game. He has pitched very poorly down the stretch and he and Garcia have been a big part of the Sox losing so much of the lead. For our supposed number 1 and 2 starters they sure haven't been pitching like it down the stretch. Also, in response to Josh's post, Buehrle is a very good pitcher and would be a #1 starter on a lot of teams but that doesn't make him an ace. There are very few aces in baseball and up to this point in his career Buehrle isn't one of them. Also, Peavy is better than Buehrle, Buehrle is more durable but thats about his only advantage over Peavy. Also, with Smoltz on the Braves and Pedro on the Mets I would hardly say Buehrle would be a lock to be the #1 on those teams. Same with Zambrano for the Cubs.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Sep 20, 2005 -> 09:16 PM) Ozzie Guillen's not a manager. Oh he's terrible. But Buehrle isn't an ace.

Not an ace

QUOTE(WSoxMatt @ Sep 20, 2005 -> 08:57 PM) Seriously we should be up 7-3... were letting Cleveland hang around! THATS NO GOOD!!! Cleveland could easily have more runs as well.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 20, 2005 -> 08:43 PM) AJP should be batting 7th. It's amazing him and PK haven't hit into more double plays than they have. You have to hit the ball on the ground to hit into a DP. AJ and Paul tend to pop up a lot.
-
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Sep 20, 2005 -> 08:05 PM) that was strike three... i hate this s*** Buehrle's strike zone as been as big or bigger than Westbrook's, stop complaining.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 10:40 PM) Think realistically....what implications did you get that this team will make the playoffs? We still lead the Yankees by 4 games which is a fairly commanding lead at this point in the season.
-
QUOTE(3E8 @ Sep 19, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) What, right next to Konerko's and Buehrle's? Didn't they hint at the very same thing? Yep. Bulletin board material is generally a shot at your team and players, I'm sure the guys on our team could not care less that Howry took a shot at the fans.

Nice job A-Row

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Sep 18, 2005 -> 01:50 PM) JC needs to k the next 2 batters Or have Punto run into a double play

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 18, 2005 -> 01:47 PM) Iguchi calls for time, Doesn't get it. Loshe is in his motion, half stops, then goes again. Throws a ball. Home plate umpire who never awarded time, which is why Lohse threw it, says "no pitch" This crew is clueless

QUOTE(downstairs @ Sep 18, 2005 -> 01:23 PM) Nobody hates us. If we're hoping for balks and close calls to go our way to win, then we won't. Even if they DO go our way. I don't expect check swings to go our way. But thats about as obvious of a balk as you will ever see and the fact it wasn't called is pretty pathetic on the umpires part.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 18, 2005 -> 01:16 PM) Everett chases ball 4, and flies out weakly to the outfield. I can't believe Ozzie still insists on hitting Everett in the upper half of the lineup.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 18, 2005 -> 01:12 PM) Unbelievable. Pods gets picked off.....AGAIN! Ozzie's arguing it was a balk. After further review, that was a massive balk. It is clearly the Sox against the world right now.

17-6 Bears, great punt return by Wade.

I didn't like that third down play call by Turner. You've had a lot of success running the ball and you throw on third and one. I don't get it.
