  1. QUOTE (Two-Gun Pete @ Apr 21, 2017 -> 07:45 AM) A better question is: "Do the Cardinals (or Pads or Reds) have an owner who is on record as being against spending money on prospects?" The Sox have spent much more on prospects recently. Look no further than the bonus paid to Carlos Rodon, and while it wasn't money, the Sox gave up some pretty darn significant assets this off season to acquire prospects. There is evidence that the mindset on prospects has changed a bit.
  2. I think you would be hard pressed to find a sky-high ceiling HS hitter that didn't have some swing and miss concerns they are few and far between. There is certainly risk in a guy like Adell, but those risky HS players are also a teams best chance to get a superstar talent (other than signing a young Cuban defector). You can't draft Mike Trout or Clayton Kershaw if you don't draft those high risk HS players. The team has some risk assessment they need to conduct on players like Adell. Though, if they do sign Robert, that would allow them to play it a little safer with a guy like Haseley, or having two guys like that (Robert and Adell) kind of acts as a little bit of a hedge against the Jared Mitchell risk (gosh he was the worst. A high risk college bat? Yikes. Trout being taken 2 picks later in that draft is really a kick in the head). **edit** Wow, looking back on that draft, after Strasburg, it was really a disaster. No one else in the top 15 picks really became impact players (Sorry Mike Leake!)
  3. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Apr 19, 2017 -> 04:54 PM) If Kendall falls it will be due to his high K% rate Hard to argue with Wright if he is on the board at #11 I get it, you like him. If Wright is still around it will be because of his high ERA, WHIP and diminished K rate. Guys that fall, fall for a reason. It would be hard to argue with any number of guys that are available at 11. Whether it is someone like Kendall, Adell or Wright falling or someone like Haseley or Smith rising up.
  4. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Apr 19, 2017 -> 01:37 PM) Manuel tweeted today that Hasely might go off the board ahead of Kendall at this point. Well, I suppose Kendall would be acceptable if he were around at 11...
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 18, 2017 -> 06:23 PM) Who would the Pirates trade, other than McCutcheon? They already traded Melancon last year, for example. Cole, Watson,Freese, Harrison...
  6. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 10, 2017 -> 12:56 PM) My plan would be 1) move Jose to DH full time, 2) Frazier to 1B full time, 3) Tyler to 3B full time, 4) Moncada to 2B. That's actually a pretty nice defensive IF. Can't imagine moving Frazier to 1B would help his trade value...
  7. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 6, 2017 -> 10:25 AM) Law wasn't high on Moncada or Cespedes either. So he has an anti-Cuban bias?
  8. QUOTE (daggins @ Mar 26, 2017 -> 10:31 PM) YoMo, obv. This is really Hawk's area of expertise.
  9. QUOTE (Soha @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 07:13 PM) One obvious answer might to be to make sure he looks healthy and doesn't have a lurking injury. Stupid AJ Preller.
  10. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Mar 23, 2017 -> 05:14 PM) Why would there be even more scouts there today if a start against the Reds doesn't matter. There will be an abundance of scouts at each of Q's starts I would bet.
  11. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 9, 2017 -> 05:14 PM) I agree here. I've heard Levine say he'd be up in May, Just about seals the deal that he will spend the year in Charlotte.
  12. I believe he only has about 200 ABs at the AA level, so even Charlotte is a fairly aggressive assignment for him.
  13. QUOTE (Special K @ Mar 6, 2017 -> 09:23 PM) What are the odds he is cleared to sign before the 15th? I seem to recall reading somewhere that he had a very good chance of being cleared to sign before the 15th, which would mean the Sox chances are significantly lower, right? The Ben Badler article seemed to indicate they are well positioned either way.
  14. And while Nevin wasn't exactly a HOFer, he had a pretty long productive career. Not sure it qualifies as a miss to draft a guy with an OPS better than .800 over a dozen years.
  15. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Feb 27, 2017 -> 11:35 AM) I think we can pretty much ignore anything Levine/Q related for a while. Can't we pretty much ignore Levine in general? When was the last time he actually broke Sox news? Bringing in Eddie Collins?
  16. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 10:35 AM) It has nothing to do with us not realizing how good he was. We all saw it. The hangup is that he was only here for 6 full years and just 5 as a starter. If you start retiring numbers for guys that played for you for 6 years, you're going to start running out of numbers. Are you really trying to argue that Sale deserves his number retired more than Buehrle because of his talent level. Obviously peak Sale was better than peak Buehrle but there is a s*** ton more to it than that. Buehrle was here for 12 f***ing years. Not to mention the fact that, oh, I don't know, he was the ace of a World Series winning team. Come on man. We get it. Sale was your favorite. He's gone, move on. Well, in a way, peak Buehrle was better. Peak Buehrle was a perfect game. Sale will never be better than that I am willing to bet.
  17. QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 02:22 PM) Here are the numbers the Sox should have retired: 2 4 9 11 35 42 72 That's it. 3, 6 (Lau), 13 (Ozzie), 14, 16, 19, 56 These guys are very good to sometimes great players, but that's what team Halls of Fame are for. And yes, 6 and 13 aren't retired but are never issued. So your scale is a HOFer? Seems a like a high bar for retired numbers. These are guys the franchise chooses to honor. The recent additions of 14 and 56 fit that bar perfectly to me. Guys that won't be HOFers, but guys that were great for the White Sox.
  18. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 12:53 AM) WAR is a counting stat, it integrates how much time has been played. - It doesn't have Saladino (1.2) over Harper (3.5) - Eaton was equivalent to Arenado because his glove was just that good last season. He was basically what the Cubs thought Heyward would be. - He was better than Q and Sale because he's a batter, so a counting stat benefits him. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/harpebr03.shtml http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/saladty01.shtml
  19. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 09:44 AM) What they should have done is an IBB equals two bases instead of one. If you really are afraid of someone then they deserve to get to second or just pitch to them. If you want to walk them the regular way you can still pitch around them but it wont be as easy as 4 simple toss outs. Wouldn't this just result in the "unintentional" intentional walk instead?
  20. This move makes no sense. It doesn't accomplish anything. The second base rule is bad, but at least there was a solid reason behind it, same for the home plate rule. This one is stupid and has no solid reason to implement it.
  21. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 09:56 PM) Going on record, I'm not a fan of this change. Me either. This is stupid. Especially in the light of "pace of play". How many IBBs are there? Every other game it takes 1 minute? Yeah, that is gonna get casual fans to watch more. Please. Just completely silly in my opinion.
  22. QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 09:34 PM) no comparison in value between Devers and Frazier Devers involves plenty of mystery as to how high his ceiling can be. Frazier is an older player who just had a down WAR year. When you have a bad year at 30 that is a big problem. Via WAR, Saladino was better per at-bat than Frazier in 2016. Sure Saladino's at-bats were more sculpted than Frazier's but it still shouldnt be close for what we gave up for Todfather So are you saying Saladino is better? Saladino had a better WAR last year than Bryce Harper, WAR can be a very flawed stat, especially if it is the only thing you are considering. According to BWAR, Eaton was basically equivalent to Nolan Arenado. Eaton was much better than Sale (and Q was a good margin better). Saladino is a good player, and a great guy to have on the team, but I guess I don't even understand the point which you are trying to make.
  23. Good bye to my least favorite Sox player ever.
