  1. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 04:47 PM) I'm just asking for posters to make a list of current mlb starting pitchers who are 6' or less and also 185 lbs or less I guaranty you that is a very short list So? Certainly most guys are going to be bigger. There is likely a standard distribution peaking around 6'2-6'3 or so. But rare as they may be, there will always be outliers, guys at either end of the bell curve. How many great hitters could you have named under 5'6 4 years ago? Would that have made you say Jose Altuve would never have been more than maybe a utility guy? We aren't talking NFL or even NBA (certainly has its share of outliers though) being a smaller guy isn't a death knell. And counting a guy out on account of 1 inch (he is 5'11 you imply 6'0 is the magic number) seems rather arbitrary and silly.
  2. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) Comparing Lopez to one of the best starting pitchers of all time is a huge reach http://www.fangraphs.com/community/six-fee...short-pitchers/ The odds are just not great that a pitcher like Lopez will stick as a starter long term. Johnny Cueto is 5'11, but is also 215 lbs Well, see, that's exactly why I made the point of saying I wasn't comparing him in anything but stature and criticism thereof. As for the Cueto thing, well, are you saying you would feel more optimistic about Lopez if he were fatter? (Fat emoji??)
  3. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 02:36 PM) Lopez will more than likely end up as a reliever. Very few starting pitchers with his size and frame have held up as starters. I hope that I am wrong, but I still feel he could be a dynamic reliever for us Lopez is 6'0 -185 Pedro Martinez 5'11-170 There were a whole bunch of experts that thought Pedro was destined for the pen because of his size. That is why he was available in a trade, twice. In no way am I saying Lopez is the next Pedro. I am saying that pitchers can be great regardless of height and build. It'd be quite a bungle in the jungle to banish him to the pen too quickly.
  4. The Twins won 59 games last season. What exactly have they done to get better? The Padres and Reds won 68 games, and again, haven't gotten any better. Brewers won 73, and haven't gotten any better. The Sox have to be pretty bad to get that first pick. To me it is more of a difference than Quintana alone can make.
  5. QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 02:09 PM) Yeah, it's not like a guy that's projected to go 1-1 will slide all the way to the 2nd round and get drafted by the Sox. That's never happened before. Daz Cameron was pretty close... He was supposed to be a top 5-10 pick and fell to comp round. But obviously not quite the same thing.
  6. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 1, 2017 -> 06:27 PM) Hostetler specifically mentioned Beer at SoxFest and said they've had scouting reports on him since he was 14. I wouldn't downplay their interest in him. I don't think anyone doubts the interest. The problem is that Beer certainly seems like the 1-1 pick (barring a sub-par season), the Sox don't seem like the worst team in baseball right now. Bad, yes. The worst? I wouldn't think so. Even without Q, there are worse teams.
  7. QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Feb 1, 2017 -> 02:46 PM) Ugh. Pass. Texas doesn't have anything that interests me at all. I have to disagree. I would rather have Mazara as a centerpiece than pretty much anyone else mentioned.
  8. QUOTE (turnin' two @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 02:53 PM) If Paulie had played his whole career in Yankee pinstripes, he may have had a chance. It was a joke guys, settle down.

  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) Yeah I was mostly responding to turnin two's argument. I do think this is helpful to see that if we get a nice performance out of one of our starters we could see these types of trades for Holland/MiGo/etc. We've been so focused on top of the line talent returns, it's hard to even figure out what those guys could get if flipped, and the teams that would be involved would be your Angels/Mariners/Marlins that are fringey contenders. Not even sure that I made an argument. I was simply trying to point out that pitching, even mediocre pitching with no track record, commands a decent return. I made no reference to the Marlins trying to acquire Q, or that such a deal would have been the base for a deal for Q. I drew no parallel to the Marlin's farm system to the systems that could be utilized to get Q. Again, just trying to point out the high price of pitching, and that I do not think it would be a good idea to drastically lower the asking price for Q, or take a deal out of fear or panic.
  11. QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Jan 19, 2017 -> 08:48 AM) Marlins system is also hot garbage. Yeah, but it is Dan Straily.
  12. The Marlins just traded 3 of their top 15 prospects, including their number 2 for Dan Straily. There is no way Hahn should lower his demands for Quintana.
  13. Not only is Q remarkable consistent year to year, but also start to start. Last year he gave up 2 or fewer runs in 21 starts. The previous year he had 19 such starts. In 2014 it was 20. He is the definition of "gives your team a chance to win". For comparison, Sale had 18 last year, 19 in 2015 and and 18 in 2014. Not trying to say that Q is better, as Sale routinely goes deeper into games, and if I had looked at 1 ER or less Sale would have been better, but Quintana gives a team as good a chance to log a W as anyone. He is not just an "innings eater", he is a damn good pitcher (I know everyone here knows that and no one is discounting his talent. Just ranting) There is no way that Hahn should panic and reduce his asking price. Just for fun, last year's Cy Young winners: Porcello had 16 starts of that quality and Scherzer had 23 (obvious advantage being in the NL) I also know this is a very arbitrary way to look at this, I thought it was just a way to show just how good, effective and consistent Quintana is from start to start. This is not any measure to really use for anything, I was just looking at his game logs and noticed it so I decided to look at some others.
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 9, 2017 -> 01:35 PM) Why not? And the Cubs have spent on international players, but that is nothing the Sox cannot do with a significantly reduced MLB payroll. It is actually, the CBA changed this year and my understanding is that there is a hard cap on international signings.
