  1. Not a fan of bunting but starting the runner with madrigal on definitely can make sense because with his high contact rate there is some double play risk, especially since madrigal also seems to hit a fair share of grounders. Thus I think it is important to have a good runner like tim or robert batting after madrigal, definitely not slow guys like catchers, Jose or eloy because that would mean lots of double plays even tough madrigal is fast himself and at least could make it only one out if he beats it out. But generally they should have a fast runner in front of him that he can move over with his contact.
  2. He definitely is super fast, already beat out a few double plays and infield hits/errors. I'm impressed with him. He has chased quite a lot but he also took some tough pitches and took tough pitches the other way. And defensively he already is a leader out there taking command in the OF.
  3. Nothing really lost yet, projections say you only need to play .500 this year to get the last playoff spot. So as long sox are not more than 1 or 2 games below 500 after 30 games they have a good chance because after the Yankees, rays, twins, Indians and Astros and As there are still two spots left for the angels, white sox, red Sox and blue jays with the rest of the teams sucking. Somebody behind giolito and keuchel in the rotation needs to step up though.
  4. Grandal is streaky and kinda one dimensional as a hitter but he still is a good hitter for a catcher due to his walks and decent pop. He will strike out and hit .240-.250 but hit 25 homers and lots of walks. The bottom line is still solid but that type of hitter will have some empty weeks.
  5. I think eloy needs to stay in the OF until 22. By then EE and Abreu are gone, Vaughn has first and DH is free for eloy. But this and next year DH is really crowded and they need to make OF work for him.
  6. Yeah, he really is a danger for himself and others out there in the OF, using strange footwork and not knowing where the wall and his other outfielders are. I really fear that there could be a collision with robert because robert very aggressively goes for balls into the gaps and eloy doesn't know where he is when he is just focused on the ball. Robert at least needs to be able to rely on eloy getting the hell out of the way when he is called off. But it seems sometimes eloy is just focusing on the ball and then blacking out everything else. The question is whether you can clean that up. He is not a plus athlete but just athletically he could handle left field a couple years. But he needs to improve his footwork and his general overview in the OF, you simply always need to know where the walls and the other fielders are so he can avoid hurtig himself or other fielders.
  7. Yeah, probably doesn't make sense to trade those prospects for mediocre veterans, giolito and cease just need to step it up or you try again next year. Still early and maybe the second turn of the rotation is better.
  8. Ricky Maybe made some questionable decisions but it is not his fault that neither starter has found the zone in their first turn and that the front office (understandably) keeps madrigal down a week for an extra year so he has to play leury at second. I would not bat delmonico 4th but really line-up positions are mostly irrelevant, those are fractions of a run decisions.
  9. But it could have been had he signed an extension. Right now vanessa probably makes more than he does but if he had signed a 60m extension that would have been different.
  10. They both took a very surprising turn though. Tatis was a prospect but he was ranked like 25th in his international class, nobody saw this coming that his tools took such a step forward. And semien was about an average hitter who had a terrible glove. I doubt he would have developed that way with the sox.
  11. Kopech certainly has had make up issues before (like the wall punching incident) but we don't know what happend here. Not sure whether a Hollywood star is the right person to be around for him because that gets you to a lot of parties, drugs and idiots. Andre agassi had that too dating Hollywood stars and doing all kind of stupid stuff until he got steffi graf who set him straight. I think he needs something like this too. Steffi was really ideal for Agassi in that regard as she was rich enough to not chase his money but down to earth and "no nonsense" enough to set him straight instead of bringing in her own drama like the previous stars he has dated.
  12. I wonder if verlander trying to change his throwing motion was a mistake. He said something like lowering his release point because biomechanics says it was less stressful and maybe that is even true but still making the body doing something that it isn't used to can be a mistake because the body was not trained for that kind of motion, especially if you don't have months to ramp it up.
  13. Fulmer has half a decade history of a 5-6 era in pro ball and is 26 years old. Yeah he was a top10 pick and good in college but if he was a 7th rounder he would have been out of baseball 2 years ago. Still worth a shot for the tigers who will suck the next 2 years anyway but I would say he has less than a 10% shot to become a mlb regular. Basically he is for the tigers what AJ reed was for the sox, there is a small chance a change of scenery helps him but more likely he is out of baseball in 1-2 years.
  14. I think McCann did a good job and is a very nice back up but there isn't much to frame when pitchers miss their spot by 1-2 feet. Grandal is a proven good framer but he also had good command pitchers helping him especially in LA.
  15. It is obviously early and the twins have a monster offense but even before the season started the pen was not great and with the kopech opt out the back end of the rotation becomes a bit shaky. Would a trade make sense? Vaughn and madrigal should be off limits and you can't trade the draft guys yet but most other prospects like sheets, stiever, Rutherford, dunning and collins on the ml side should be available. Should that get you something that is a real upgrade?
  16. Oh yeah, think I mixed him up with one of the countless injured sox pitching prospects. But still those years of bad track record don't bode well for him. Or was there a single thing sox player dev messed up with him that could be reversed?
  17. Yeah. I don't think he will bounce back after all the injuries and struggles but even if there is a 10% chance it is worth for them to find out while the sox want to win and can't afford him to learn at the ML level.
  18. It is still not really sustainable because even in a 10 week season a player could have 3 weeks of a .200 babip after 7 weeks of a .400 babip. But the chance that you make it through a season with a 400 babip of course increases but that goes both ways, could also be a true talent 300 babip guy has a 220 babip. But still if a player has posted a 400 babip he is not expected to continue that, there is just less time to fall back to earth.
  19. team wins 90 wins = 33 wins 100 wins = 37 hitter stats 30 HR = 11 40 HR = 15 50 HR= 19 200 hits = 74 100 RBI/runs = 37 120 RBI = 44 pitcher stats 20 wins = 7 wins 200 k = 74 300k= 111 40 saves = 15 50 saves = 19 Math is simply /162 ×60 or /2.7, values rounded Which major "milestones" could sox players reach? Anyone 15 homers or 40 RBI? Or 74 hits? I think 7 wins is quite possible for someone who has a good season.
  20. Yeah for trade value a HS hitter would have made more sense.
  21. 12 years really is a lot. He is great but he will turn 40 his final year. Ideally I wouldn't give out contracts that run past age 36 which of course is unrealistic for such a superstar who just can demand having a couple decline years paid. But if I was a Dodgers guy I would have preferred 2-3 years less, I.e only through age 37-38 so you only have 2-3 bad years and not 5+. There is always a chance someone is ortiz or nelson cruz but that is rare especially for smaller players who rely on their athleticism and explosiveness as I dont think he will be able to pop 35 bombs at age 38 like cruz did.
  22. Typically I would say the ranking doesn't matter but in the 60 game season setting the rotation up in a way that allows an extra start of the top guys could matter as playoff races could be super tight.
  23. Many people in baseball hate that all those non pro ball guys like Kyle Boddy, ochart, lisle, Albert and so on are getting jobs but that is the trend. The days of big personality managers are over, nowadays managers are more like mid level executives of companies in a way that they are basically not making decisions but their job is to execute the plan of the analytics people and the top level management (front office). Ozzie was great but that type wouldn't work anymore today.
  24. I think madrigal will hit like 12-15 hr one or two seasons. Not every year of course but even ichiro had a 15 hr year although he averaged 6-9 in his good years. Madrigal could be like that too.
  25. Yeah madrigal is hard to predict. He could be a Tony gwynn or ichiro type of hitter who bats 350 or he could be Jose Iglesias or dee Gordon (which wouldn't be terrible either but mor what you are looking for). He could also grow into a bit more power and be a Dustin Pedroia type hitting like 300 with 12-15 homers. I think he already has gained some strength and hits the ball a bit harder but obviously still not a big power guy.
