Machado signs with Padres 10/300
GenericUserName replied to yesterday333's topic in The Diamond Club
Yeah, I said he owns the South Bend Cubs. But that article is the one thing confusing me about whether or not he sold his shares in the Sox. If he did, then I think he is out and likely won't come back. If he is still a minority owner of the Sox like other articles said then I think there is a good chance he takes over. I guess there is also the question of his fanhood. That article said he was a Cubs fan since he was a kid but the one I posted seem to say otherwise. So I wonder if the one I posted assumed he was a fan based on the memorabilia which could have just been because he was also an owner. If that is the case then again its unlikely he is next. However, all of that said, he is basically the only name of note right now. The owners don't want Cuban and he said he doesn't want baseball anymore. As for other billionaires, we could only be guessing. Maybe Ed DeBartolo wants a second chance at getting the team. There was talk his family would pick up the Ravens when they were for sale, so maybe they have interest in another sports franchise. Beyond that, I don't really know who wants to own a baseball team and also has the money. -

I mean probably, but do you really think someone with that much memorabilia hanging around simply switches sides? Or is it more likely that he had a chance to make a good investment and thought that was a good thing to say? -

For anyone guessing at who the next owner might be, a good place to start would be with Andrew Berlin. He was, and possibly still is, a minority owner of the Sox while also being a minority owner of the Cubs as well as the owner of the South Bend Cubs. While he is a Cubs owner, he is apparently an avid White Sox fan. Here is a quote from this article: So he has an interest in baseball, is a Sox fan, is already part of the ownership group, and if he were willing to sell his other stakes he would likely have enough money to have majority control. -

Cuban was on a Freakonomics podcast episode a little while ago and said he wasn't going to buy a baseball team. Here is the quote from the podcast: -

This is what I think a lot of people don't get. Ownership isn't going to want to spend any more money than they have to on the team. Part of the GM's job is to convince the owner they need to spend the money. Hahn has obviously not been able to do that above a certain level. -
We should just flood the market so there is an enticing alternative location should the next owner look to relocate the team.

Who is available in 2020? Looking ahead to the future
GenericUserName replied to BigSexy23's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Its a Reinsdorf team. They are going to try to piece together something that will have a shot even though it will only end up with us spending a ton of money on a bunch of nothing. -
Has to be. I mean, would you pitch to him? I feel like scouting him this year is going to be really about watching him when he faces good pitchers who will actually challenge him.
-
Agreed. I did just find another guy I want, though not as a first rounder. Gabe Holt out of Texas Tech is a sophomore eligible middle infielder who kind of reminds me of Trea Turner and has the stats to match. Edit: Looks like Holt has been playing CF and RF mostly this year. So he has the versatility of Turner too haha.

ONE OF US! ONE OF US! -
Is that one of those wrist injuries that drains your power? Because if so he is probably going to drop a ton because it seems like he is a power above hit guy.

Similar to that signing bonus tweet, is deferred money taxed at the state of residence because the player isn't working in the other states? Because if that is the case then the deferrals might actually be good instead of bad lie we would assume. -

For players who have put up numbers like these guys, there is a pretty good chance it will work out, https://blogs.fangraphs.com/harper-machado-betts-and-history/ -

Pretty sure agents are also covered by the CBA because they are negotiating for one of the parties. I honestly wonder how much of this market freeze could be fixed if they actually enforced the CBA and didn't let either side negotiate through the media. It might actually cause both sides to sweat a little bit more and not just wait around. -

But why would the Phillies want it known that they are close to a deal? That is just asking for another team to come in and up their offer. If you really are close you are going to try to keep it as quiet as possible. Having someone in your front office leak it to a national reporter isn't keeping it quiet.
-
I think part of it is that we all basically know that these reporters are leaked things for specific reasons, so you kind of have to think about why its being reported more than what is being reported. With the no-name "sources" we all know they want attention, but they are also probably more likely to leak something true without an agent agenda than a big national reporter.

Looks like he was also the guy that started that rumor about the Dodgers being investigated similarly to the Braves which MLB has come out saying isn't true. -

That guy also had this from a few days ago, so he isn't really changing his story that the Padres are in the lead. -

Sounds legit in that he is seemingly a real person with a job in sports, but I don't know how an SID from a small college in New York would have inside info that the national guys don't have. -

Ah, the old puff-puff-pufferfish and pass. Edit: Awesome quote from the article: "At one point the dolphins are seen floating just underneath the water's surface, apparently mesmerised by their own reflections." Who hasn't been there before haha -

Yeah, you're right. MLB would know something was up as soon as we started actually signing more than a handful of guys every year. -

Bring some money and sign some 13 year olds for the Sox while you're down there. Gotta get them before anyone else sees them.
