The funniest part to me is that some website said the signing was official and it was for slot and that tweet was their source. I just had to shake my head because that tweet literally says neither of those things. -

If you mean Luis Tejada I'm pretty sure that's not the guy we were targeting. We were supposed to sign Miguel Tejada Jr. -

CWS Games of Drafted Prospects

Its currently on my second screen. I'm primarily watching the college national team vs 18u national team game right now. https://www.mlb.com/video/usa-baseball-18u-vs-cnt-exhibit/c-2169431883?tid=9612588 -
The College National Team is playing the 18u trial team right now. Probably like 90% chance our first round pick is playing in this game (the other 10% is Rutschman playing in the CWS right now). https://www.mlb.com/video/usa-baseball-18u-vs-cnt-exhibit/c-2169431883?tid=9612588

2018 White Sox draft picks and signings thread

Kiley said several times in his chat today that there are a couple high school pitchers drafted in the early rounds who still have not signed and are threatening to go to college, mostly for negotiating leverage, but a few might actually end up doing it. Just off the top of my head he mentioned Gunnar Hoglund, Carter Stewart, and Mason Denaburg and then there is also obviously Hankins. I wonder how much of this is a one time issue because there was so much high school pitching right at a time when teams were shying away from that demographic so many of them did not get offered as much as they thought they would. I could also see this being teams trying to take advantage of the new draft rules by calling some of these kids bluffs and if the kid does decide to go to school, not losing much because they can get the pick back the next year and they don't lose as much money for other picks because they had already planned to use that full slot. The new strategy could be to draft underslot college guys early (who are also safer picks) and then take whatever high school players falls to like the fourth round even if they may not sign. You can then draft a few more high school guys in the last ten rounds and if the early HS guy doesn't sign use the underslot savings to try to lure one of them. -
Jose Rodriguez and Kelvin Maldonado are at least interesting enough to follow at this point.

But then they would get a ton less time in the short season leagues and most of them would have to go more than a month without playing because only a small number of schools play this late in the year. Its not like they have the signing deadline before the college season ends so guys can't sign. Its just some times guys still have to play and that holds other guys up too. There isn't any good in it, but its avoiding a potentially really bad scenario. If he signs overslot, like most probably expect, but then Madrigal realizes he wants to go back to OSU for his senior year and decides not to sign, suddenly we lose that extra pool money from his underslot deal and then we are into the penalty area and lose future draft picks. That scenario is unlikely, but when there is very little added benefit (especially because Walker was injured and may not be able to play anyway), any amount of added risk just doesn't seem worth it. -
Keep in mind that we don't own the minor leagues teams. Most of them, for all MLB teams, are just player development contracts where someone else owns the team and stadium and everything else while the organization just provides the players.

Him and whoever is in charge of strength and conditioning. They obviously do not have immediate contact with the lower levels, the guys in charge at the major league level probably set the system the rest of the organization uses. In my experience in a strength program, the bigger change in our training was when the head of the department (who was like Herm and Allen Thomas in that they are responsible for the big team) changed as opposed to when our individual strength coach changed. The coach change at our level resulted in small changes and big changes in personality while the change at the highest level meant the whole way we went about lifting changed even though we had most of the same staff as before.

Its probably just where he established residency and they didn't care to put the effort in to find his real hometown like they would for a big cuban signing. I bet if he makes it to the minors, or really even the higher levels of the minors, they'll have the right information.

From what I understand, the Sox wanted to keep most of their affiliates within a relatively close distance to each other so that players can be shuttled between them easier, as well as I assume for organizational scouting/training/coaching/medical reasons. For this to work, the teams would basically have to all be in the southeast or the western part of the country because there are very few teams around Chicago and not one at each level. So the Sox could have a team nearby, but not all of them would be able to be close and I guess the Sox don't see the added benefit of some people going to watch those games outweighing the costs of splitting up the concentration of teams, especially when the minors league could cannibalize our already low attendance.

They actually had Collins unranked before, so he rose into the top 100. Plus, this is only a tweak to the rankings and not their full update, so him making it on the list means they really like what he is doing.

He is playing in Great Falls game tonight, so he is definitely signed. Also Stiever is doing pretty well in his first game. -

I was really kind of hoping OSU would lose so we can get Madrigal signed but it doesn't look like that's going to happen tonight. -
That google spreadsheet of the roster has him on the 60 day DL in Great Falls. He was in Great Falls last year, so that makes sense. The 60 day DL means he is probably out for the rest of the year though
