Sox.Orioles Game thread 5.23.18 The Return of Covey
GenericUserName replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2018 Season in Review
Probably the guy we just signed to play in AAA. He has a ton of ML experience and none of the other AAA are really forcing the issue. If it's a serious injury for Leury maybe the Sox should have one of the older MIF in AAA start seeing some time in the OF in case we need them. -

Well looks like he may get his shot real quick. -
White Sox Sign Alex Presley (on CHA Active roster)
GenericUserName replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
There seems to have been a ton of injuries and turnover at Charlotte lately. Also Casey Gillaspie is listed as on the suspended list, so I don't know what's up with that. EDIT: Just saw future sox said temp inactive list. Still wonder what's up. -
Just looking through hitting stats this year (haven't gotten to pitchers yet) plus guys that I heard are towards the top of the draft Josh Jung 3B/SS Texas Tech - started showing more power this year and has a sub 1 K/BB ratio Bryson Stott SS UNLV - speedy SS with almost twice as many BBs as Ks; 29 doubles this year, so hopefully he adds the strength to put a few of those over the fence Andrew Vaughn 1B Cal - masher with high walks, low strikeouts; might be able to play an OF corner; not a prototypical size for a power guy Matt Wallner RF Southern Miss - definite corner OF with big power and at least average contact Drew Mendoza 3B FSU - intriguing power/contact profile at third, didn't make the jump this year, well thought of by prospect evaluators Michael Toglia OF UCLA - big power (college and cape); lot of walks and lot of strikeouts; may be playing 1B this year, but one evaluator said he is a definite corner OF Logan Davidson SS Clemson - reminds me of Jeremy Eierman in that he has speed & power but may end up at third; Davidson probably has better contact skills Adley Rutschman C Oregon State - good eye, good defense, developing power Will Wilson 2B/3B NC State - good power, improving eye; not much speed, so questionable range at 2B; young for grade so may have more development left Logan Wyatt OF Louisville - great eye and double power right now; could have a Trevor Larnach like rise if he gains more power Thomas Dillard C/OF Ole Miss - good power, good eye, good speed; not sure anything is plus; if he is a catcher he is much more interesting Shea Langliers C Baylor - good power, good eye, worryingly low batting average this year; apparently a good defender Braden Shewmake SS Texas A&M - showed great power/speed/contact/defense as a freshman but regressed this year; could be #1 pick, could be late rounds And then there are all the high school guys which perfect game has ranked. The big ones there seem to be Bobby Witt Jr as a potential 5 tool SS, CJ Abrams as a speedy SS with emerging power, Rece Hinds as a power hitting 3B, and Riley Greene and Jerrion Ealy as good hitters in the outfield. The two pitchers who's names I hear the most are HS LHP Hunter Barco and TCU LHP Nick Lodolo. Pretty nice that the top 2 guys right now are both lefties and the top HS hitter seems to be an exciting tooled up SS.

Oh man, I already have a whole file of guys I like for 2019.
-
So it looks like that top 4 guys might have just become a top 3. I really hope we aren't the one left without a guy

I feel like Pipeline always errs towards the middle grades on players. Even in their write up of him they talk about his "considerable power potential" and the give him a 55. For Gorman they even said how he has 70 grade power and then they gave him a 60. Casas is said to have some of the best raw power in the draft and they give him a 55. It's one reason I really like how Fangraphs does the present and future grades because with Pipeline its hard to tell who they think has good power that will play versus great power that may play.
-
Yep. And he is getting talk whenever people talk about 2019. He is on the USA Collegiate National team and was named one of the top guys for 2019. There is some hesitation though because he does currently have a .450 BABIP, so he is due for some regression, and he didn't have the best summer performance last year.

Yeah, it seems like the only thing that could mess it up is if the Tigers take Bart at 1 and then the question is who the Giants take and who the Phillies back up is if Bohm is taken. I'm assuming the Giants would be happy to take Mize at 2, so it should still work out that Madrigal is there at 4.

Delmonico Out 4-6 Weeks w Fractured Metacarpal
GenericUserName replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
They could get around that by putting Delmonico on the 60 day DL if they think its closer to 6 weeks plus some minor league games to get back in rhythm. They could also just use Yolmer in the OF if they need it until Avi comes back. -
Probably not, but when you are scouting how the power will translate a 40% reduction will make a lot of homeruns turn into flyouts. If he is a good contact guy with average power barely hitting them out, then a 40% reduction is a lot bigger than for a guy who hits massive shots but doesn't have the contact to do it consistently. It's the same thing with the ball in the majors now: it helps the big power hitters less than the small contact guys because most the HRs the power guys hit would be homeruns even without the new ball while the ones the small guys hit would just be outs or gappers.

On the pipeline podcast they did say they change their mocks even if they have no new info so that they can see how everything else would shake out as a result. This could be that.
-
It looks credible enough, but even if its real it could be the team trying to create uncertainty for Mize so the team gets some sort of negotiating leverage.

Was Battenfield the one that gained like 3-4 mph on his fastball this year? I can't remember who it was just someone who was a good control, low velo pitcher gained a couple ticks and was looking like much more of a prospect and I for some reason I think it was him.

Race for the worst 2018 record (Top 5 pick) again
GenericUserName replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
So far the college national team has announced Shea Langeliers (C), Adley Rutschman (C), Braden Shewmake (3B?), Bryson Stott (SS), Andrew Vaughn (1B), Matt Wallner (RF). Our pick will almost definitely come from this team or from the high school national team. -
It looks like Larnach is going to go in the teens. If you've been watching OSU, what do you think of Kwan? Also about Heimlich, we get enough bad press already, I really wouldn't want to give the media a low hanging target like that. There seems to be a belief amongst many OSU fans that he is innocent and just took a plea deal to avoid something worse, but then again people usually try to stick up for their players. It's pretty crazy that had he not forgotten to re-register (or something similar, I can't remember) that people probably never would have found out about it.

I don't know, but he should be ready for spring training next year. I think he tore a ligament in his leg, but even with a year for recovery he could still play most of next season.
-
Someone from the FO mentioned they look at relievers who could be starters but play at big schools that have too many good starters, like what happened with Dane Dunning. Someone who seemingly fits that exact profile is Michael Byrne out of Florida. He has put up some pretty great numbers and seems to have a build to be able to be stretched out.
-
I don't think Beer makes it that far, but I would love Baker in the third round. If not him, maybe Bren Spilane later.
-
Nope. Bobby Witt Jr is the top high school name right now, but he isn't at their level. We will find out the high school side of it during the summer circuit where the guys really start to separate themselves. An interesting point for anyone who wants Bart because we need a catcher, there are two really good college catchers in the draft next year. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/mlb-draft-rankings-2018-2019-and-2020/ This is fangraphs rankings from before the season. For an idea of the top college guys, look at the USA college national team which is putting out names every week or so.

It really matters where he thinks he will go as opposed to where other think he will go. If he is just happy to be in consideration for the top ten after not being a first rounder before the year, he could still go underslot at 4. However, if he is hearing all the talk about him and thinks he is definitely going in the top, he could demand top money. So its basically impossible to tell what a guy will demand. I do think we should be able to go underslot a little bit at the very least because it doesn't seem like he is in consideration for any of the teams above us, so since we are his ceiling the next possible selection should be the most he asks for.
