They're spending money! https://blogs.fangraphs.com/instagraphs/job-posting-white-sox-baseball-operations-software-engineer-and-analyst/
-
Was this a bad attempt at sarcasm? Because basically every team does this. You can listen to the teams announcing picks on the last day and at the end there are a ton where they mention some relation or connection to the organization.
-
But then you could use the savings to try to sign one of the HS guys that we drafted that we didn't think we would be able to sign.
-
Yep. I don't get why people freak out about this. If its an expected over slot deal in the first 3 rounds, then it doesn't matter if they sign because we weren't planning on using savings from that pick and we could get the pick back next year anyway.
-
I really hope we don't go after him. A couple of the articles I was reading a while back on cuban prospects left on the island mentioned how he is probably overrated because of his name. Apparently he is horrible against breaking balls and is way too much of a free swinger, and as much as people will probably talk about his defense and speed, really its only good but not great speed and a big arm but not necessarily good reads or jumps. I would much prefer we wait to see what other guys pop up. There were a few that were supposed to be on the list of guys in that MLB-Cuba agreement (like Yoelkis) that I feel like might try to defect now that they got so close only to have it fall through at the last second.
-
Were they teammates for anything outside of the one 18U tournament? Because that was like two weeks long, so it wasn't a long look and he did really bad at it.
-
Well I found something different we can spend some money on: For any who don't know, Boddy is the guy who runs Driveline. Let's use some of that money we have lying around to revamp our player development staff.
-
You have to be a little skeptical of the stats because it is in the PCL with the new ball, but if we have an extra spot on the 40 at some point maybe we can see what he can do in the majors.

GRate to get Netting to the Foul Poles
GenericUserName replied to Bananarchy's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I feel like someone will work out a system for the nets to go up and down. There will probably be enough stadiums around the world doing this that some engineering type will figure out something to sell to teams. Just give it an offseason trade show or two. MLB should take a page out of the NPB's playbook and have "excite" seats. It gives seats with no netting for those fans who want it while also being a special experience for other fans and the team can probably charge more for those seats. -
Jokes on you, its already decriminalized!
-
Maybe just clearing room for Jon Jay.
-
He might have slid to 5, but 5 could have also then offered him over slot.
-
Yeah. Its actually even less than that. Its like if you turn 21 within 45 days of the draft or something like that.
-
He will be 21 by the draft date. He was 19 when drafted out of college, so he was always going to be sophomore eligible.
-
I mean its probably an overpay in terms of comparing it to other drafted players, but in terms of just actual value to an organization it would be worth it. The draft suppresses a player's true value so much that even an overpay is a massive discount. The only reason it would be considered an overpay would be because we have a limited pool, but if we don't have anyone else to use it on, then its worth it.
-
Not really, especially since we haven't signed all the other HS guys yet. Since he is going to be over slot, losing his slot value won't actually hurt us and we would actually have the amount above the slot that we were going to use for him to use to sign other guys. So if we had planned for ~$1.3mm extra to pay him (so ~$2mm total) and he wants to negotiate out of our range, we can take that $1.3mm, add the free $125k, and see if that is enough to get Logan Britt to sign. Then, as long as we offered at least 40% of the slot to Dahlquist, we would get an extra pick in the third round next year. So then he would be in the position of either taking a max of slot or going to school.

Oh, Butler is interesting http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/profile.asp?ID=195937 Looks like he was good, got injured before his junior year and missed it, then struggled when he came back as a RS JR and finally put it back together this year. -

My first thought as well. Lets see what he can do with different coaching.
