  1. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 12:37 AM) You make a good point I did not think about which is, if the Sox trade Gio or Kopech for Machado, then they can sort of replenish by taking a starting pitcher prospect in the first round. Gio, yeah, but guys like Kopech don't grow on trees. He is the #1 pitching prospect in baseball not named Shohei Ohtani. If we can't get an extension, the odds of us being able to get something of equivalent value back seems low and the top pick most likely isn't going to be as good.
  2. QUOTE (Tony @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 12:16 AM) I really think Rosenthal means flipped at the deadline, not right away. That makes a ton more sense, but is also a ton more risky. What happens if Torres and Andujar go out and kill it? Or they just realize they can wait for a few months to sign him. Then we're left getting pennies on the dollar for him.
  3. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 11:50 PM) Susan Slusser‏Verified account @susanslusser Follow Follow @susanslusser More From the great @dgoold, comments from Mike Matheny that make it clear Cards would like to help Piscotty get back to the Bay Area. Piscotty’s mom was diagnosed with ALS this year: Thats awesome. Somethings are more important than making sure you get all you can from a player. Classy move by the organization.
  4. QUOTE (kwill @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 11:53 PM) I know I am late to this party but can a White Sox Reporter please ask Rick Hahn he decided to keep Jacob May instead of Jordan Guerrero? I have to believe their is some other issue that was at play here. I read from a couple different places that he faded down the stretch, so maybe the team thinks he can't hold the innings as a starter and doesn't have the stuff for the bullpen?
  5. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 12:02 AM) Giolito Id be ok with but not Kopech... I'd hate that. This, exactly this. I think Kopech can be an ace while Giolito only seems like a good starter at this point. I don't understand the flip to the Yankees part though, and I'm the guy calling for everyone to be flipped. Only way I can see it is if the Yankees would need the O's to take money but they don't want to, so we act as the third team, but why not make it a three way? Another option is that maybe the O's would need more from Yankees because they are in division and the Yankees won't offer it, so we take a little less from the Yankees to get it done.
  6. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 11:04 PM) Jon Heyman‏Verified account @JonHeyman Following Following @JonHeyman More Sources: A’s are in agreement on a trade to acquire Stephen Piscotty. Two minors leaguers go to cards in deal. I don't know if the Cardinals targeted the A's or if it was just a coincidence, but it's going to be nice for Piscotty to go to Oakland. He is from the Bay Area and earlier this year his mother was diagnosed with ALS.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 04:44 PM) Think Adam Eaton package. I think it will be lower. The Marlins are desperate to get rid of salary and teams know that and that's why all of their returns have been underwhelming. Also the Eaton trade is widely considered to be overpay so even if they had the same value it would probably be less.
  8. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 04:08 PM) Bruce Levine‏ @MLBBruceLevine Sox GM Rick Hahn expects his busier time to sign and trade after these meetings through the holidays . The moment I stop refreshing my computer every 30 seconds after the winter meetings Hahn is going to trade half our roster and I'm not going to hear about it for three days.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 03:06 PM) Typically in a very early extension like that, this is not something that is usually there. No trades come in with players that are closer to 10/5 status. Yeah, I know. I was just wondering if the Marlins old FO did something stupid like that. They have a record of not always making the best decisions.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:48 PM) Jon Heyman‏Verified account @JonHeyman 1m1 minute ago Marlins are regrouping now and plan to talk to Christian Yelich about how he feels about staying. He’s frustrated to see 3 best friends/top players go. So he may say he wants to go, which may trigger trade of him, too. Does he have any sort of no trade in his contract?
  11. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:23 PM) I dont think his own brother is going to tell the Sox to shy away. Exactly, so the only reason we shouldn't get him is if he is already picked.
  12. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 13, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) He gets 30 days on the minor leagues (from a rehab perspective...which is nice) and then you only need only 90 active days on the roster (3 months..vs the entire season). This essentially means you don't need to carry him on your active 25 man roster the vast majority of the season...just 90 days and you could actually spread it over the 2 years. I really like the idea of Burdi either way, the flexibility is just an extra plus. Yeah, he is a perfect guy to pick up. The only reasons we shouldn't take Burdi are if someone else take him before us or his brother gives us some inside info about him not returning to form.
  13. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 05:18 PM) Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN The Yankees are one of the teams that has expressed interest in Manny Machado. There would be major questions about whether the two division rivals would actually conclude a deal, but Orioles are listening, Yankees have a loaded farm system. White Sox also interested. Edit: Added link Maybe this is why we haven't been doing anything. We are waiting to see what Machado is going to cost. If we can put together an offer the Orioles like and they let us talk extension before the trade maybe we don't get rid of Abreu and Garcia because 2019 really becomes the start of the window. If its obvious we can't then we move on and seek out trades to sell off some guys.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 12, 2017 -> 12:49 PM) While I'd love to be a part of it, I don't see a scenario where Ellsbury waives NTC to go to us unless strictly playing time is the most important thing. Maybe you can convince him that we would flip him to a contender at the deadline if he plays well (which we would probably do anyway). He would get actual playing time and would be on a contenting team come playoff time. I also wonder if it would be possible to have the Yankees pay down his buyout if it is exercised. Don't make them pay down the first few years, but send $4mil for the last year if he is bought out, maybe a little more if not. It would clear their books for the next few years and would only put a little money on the books in the future when the luxury tax is higher while also limiting risk for whatever team is taking him on.
  15. QUOTE (whitesoxwinner @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 04:33 PM) Jon Heyman said that Gardner, Stanton, and Judge will all be rotated in the corner outfield spots and DH. Personally, I think they would get rid of ells bury before Gardner because Gardner is a clubhouse presence. Ellsbury has a full no trade. I don't see him waiving that to go to a lesser team.
  16. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 12:33 PM) Wow, I just saw the actual terms of the trade. What a horrific deal for the Marlins. They’re giving up $30M and the best prospect they get in return is Guzman. They should have waited and hoped Stanton would reconsider other teams eventually. I think their biggest concern was the money and the Yankees took more than the Cardinals would have. It's a horrible baseball trade, but for what their ownership wants its not bad.
  17. QUOTE (GermanSock @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 06:25 AM) question with kelenic is whether he can play CF with an additional 20 pounds of muscle mass. trout can obviously but he also had speed in spades. when he hits like trout that obiously doesn't matter but trout really is a 99th percentile outcome. I think chance is that if kelenic is seen as a CF he is a top5 pick, if they think he is a corner OF with 20 pounds more he is a top15-20 pick. I just wonder why everyone assumes that a kid is as fast as they are ever going to be when they are 18? When people talk about high school football recruits they say how they will add muscle and get faster, but for every baseball player the consensus is that they will add muscle and slow down. With his current run times he could probably stay in CF if he just maintains his speed.
  18. Hopefully this thins out the Yankees farm a good amount. I still think we should see if they need a third team to take on money. If he's going to end up in NY we might as well try to get something from it.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 09:37 PM) Sounds like Yanks are gonna likely get him according to numerous baseball writers Wow, that sucks for us. Maybe it takes them out of the Machado sweepstakes though.
  20. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 04:40 PM) Maybe I'm crazy, and admittedly I have never seen him play, but are these japanese league stats THAT impressive to warrant such lofty scouting reports? I mean Eric Thames absolutely destroyed japanese league pitching, far more than Otani ever has. I'm not knocking pro japanese baseball, but the competition level is far below the MLB. His 3.3 BB/9 is merely average supposedly for japanese league pitchers as well. Pitching grades: Fastball: 80 | Slider: 65 | Curveball: 50 | Splitter: 65 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 70 Hitting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 65 | Run: 65 | Arm: 80 | Field: 50 | Overall: 60 I'm by no means calling him a bust, but I think there will be much more of a learning curve for him than is being projected. Put it this way, Ohtani was destroying the league and won the MVP when he was only 21! He is probably going to get better in the coming years. From a stats translation perspective, at a younger age he was better at pitching than Darvish or Tanaka and was a better hitter than Matsui. From a tools perspective he has legit 80 grade pure speed (rated at 65 due to being slow out of the box and not a great base stealer), huge power (literally hit a ball out of the roof), and has hit 102mph while pitching. There are obviously some risks: he has a history of soft tissue injuries, some think his fastball runs too straight, and people wonder if the bat will be able to develop taking so many days off. But from a talent perspective, he is the best all around player to come into the MLB in a long time. Its possible he fails (sure thing prospects fail all the time) but the excitement over what he can do is totally justified.
  21. QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 02:32 PM) I had just used MLB rankings (which obviously not the be all end all,) had him at #21. Don't get me wrong, I would have protected him and figure we would lose him. Just trying to figure a way to get something for a lost resource. As another poster mentioned, you may not be able to add him to the 40 if you acquire him which would kill his value. Earlier, I even wondered if we didn't like anyone better, could we draft him? You can draft your own guys. Apparently some team years ago forgot to protect a guy but they had a high pick so they just took him.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 02:15 PM) and Soto too. And Severino to the Twins today I believe. The biggest international guy left is probably Julio Pablo Martinez. He just had a showcase today. True 80 speed in CF with some solid hitting ability. All the teams left with money will probably try to target him first.
  23. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 01:04 PM) Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1 9s Ohtani is going to the #Angels I like it. Thats going to be fun to watch with him and Trout. How many times do we play them at home next year? That might be a must attend game.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 12:50 PM) I am guessing they mean in the international market. The other side is that it would also set Ohtani free again. From him mentioning reputation I thought it sounded more like for the GM or other members of the front office
  25. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 10:58 AM) Kelenic will have scouts all over him this season since he is projected to be a top 15 draft pick. I think by the time of the draft we will have a much better sense of what sort of player he can be. I heard he's only doing travel ball this spring so hopefully he gets out there against some good competition. The Sox should have an advantage with him come draft time with him being so close by that they can probably watch him more or bring him in more often.
