  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 01:10 PM) All teams are limited to spending what is left in their bonus pools AND teams that have spending restrictions due to exceeding caps in 2015 or 2016 signing periods are still subject to those caps. So yes we are limited to $300k per kid assuming we have that much left to spend. We might not be. I don't know how to embed a tweet, but Badler said this a little while ago: With the new international system in place, the precedent set with the Red Sox doesn't really matter.
  2. In one of the more recent BA updates they said the players would be under signing restrictions, but it didn't say international bonus pools like other earlier reports were, so I wonder if MLB is going to do something different this time. They do have the opportunity to set the precedent because the only other thing like this was the Red Sox but that was under a different international system.
  3. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 11:04 PM) Good question. But protecting AAAA players and bad veterans over prospects is not that surprising considering the way the FO had operated through June of 2016. Hahn is back to his old habits. How in the world can you expose a prospect in order to protect Al Albequerque or Farquar, or Petricka, or.... I think you are forgetting that these guys are going on the 40 man and we have to field a team of 25 from those 40. If we put too many low level prospects on the 40, then we would need to get them off it eventually and exposed them to being picked up by another team. If Hahn is confident that a prospect won't get pick, they are safer not putting them on and betting that no one will roster them for a whole year rather than losing them to a team that could just put them in the minors. And I'm sorry, but Rick Hahn was one of the fastest rising gm candidates when we hired him and since he has taken full control he has been amazing while your involvment in the game of baseball strecthes as far as you can throw your beer can from your recliner when you're watching the highlights because you couldn't even be bothered to watch a whole game, so I'm going to have to side with Hahn's strategy on this one.
  4. QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 04:58 PM) Anyone has the link of the latest 40 man roster? ESPN shows the corpses of Covey, Volstad, Brantly and May still on the list. And also the chances of Basebe getting picked is pretty slim, don't agree with decision to protect him him over Polo. I don't have a link, but I have a list of the current one: 1 SP Carlos Rodon 2 SP James Shields 3 SP Reynaldo Lopez 4 SP Lucas Giolito 5 SP Carson Fulmer 6 SP Ian Clarkin 7 SP Dylan Covey 8 RP Nate Jones 9 RP Aaron Bummer 10 RP Gregory Infante 11 RP Juan Minaya 12 RP Zach Putnam 13 RP Danny Farquhar 14 RP Jace Fry 15 RP Jake Petricka 16 RP AL Alburquerque 17 RP Thyago Vieira 18 C Kevan Smith 19 C Omar Narvaez 20 1B Jose Abreu 21 1B Casey Gillaspie 22 2B Yoan Moncada 23 2B Alen Hanson 24 3B Matt Davidson 25 SS Tim Anderson 26 SS Yolmer Sanchez 27 SS Tyler Saladino 28 OF Eloy Jimenez 29 OF Daniel Palka 30 OF Nicky Delmonico 31 OF Avisail Garcia 32 OF Leury Garcia 33 OF Willy Garcia 34 OF Jacob May 35 OF Charlie Tilson 36 OF Adam Engel 37 OF Ryan Cordell 38 OF Luis Basabe 39 OF Micker Adolfo
  5. Hopefully Jake Burger is at Winston-Salem for a while. Some time with Viquel could probably take away any questions of whether he will be able to stay at third as long as he stays in shape.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 19, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) Now I'm getting mad. This is irresponsible. We're not going to win a pennant without some leftovers. These 2 guys are excellent hitters and ballplayers and both have intangibles a team likes. If Hahn trades these two you may all have your wish, I may be gone as a fan. Done. It's ridiculous to trade these two and think we're going to win one or two or more WS titles with the rebuilt group. Ever hear of a mixture of guys who've been with the team a while and all the new young players? Hahn obviously (if this report is true) loves the fact all the statniks/trade people are praising him daily. Mr Hahn I ask you, what the hell is wrong with Abreu and Avi??? Why the need to trade them for MORE prospects. I was on the fence about trading them before but now I'm definitely for trading them!
  7. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Nov 17, 2017 -> 03:42 PM) I think they'll score more runs and hopefully get on a base at a higher clip but they will struggle on the mound and the bullpen will still be bad And if the bullpen is good we'll probably trade most of it before the deadline. This isn't our year. This year is still for building for the future.
  8. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 10:02 PM) How do you say Ricky Vaughn in Portuguese? I believe its pronounced Zack Hess
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 08:04 PM) Right. I think they get another 38 on the AAA roster. Yep and the players can be from any level.
  10. QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 07:54 PM) Don't forget, there are also AAA and AA rounds of the rule V as well. If Adolfo isnt added to the 40 man, I think he's a goner. Yeah, but there are also protected rosters for each of those. We could easily put Adolfo on the AAA roster and then he could only be taken in the major league portion of the draft.
  11. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:49 AM) Nick Burdi has value though. The Twins almost got Jamie Garcia for him (while injured) this past deadline, but the Burdi portion of the deal fell through due to medicals. I think they'll trade him before they remove him from the 40 man. He's not currently on the 40 and the Twins have him and 6 other guys on their top 30 that are rule 5 eligible.
  12. I think one of the big questios no one knows the answer to is how many years worth of international signings are going to be free agents. Was it just the span of the GMs time or do they find they were dirty (which most teams were) even before that and release all of those guys.
  13. Also I said in another thread, I want to keep one spot open because I kind of want us to go after Nick Burdi on the Twins. He is injured and might be out for the year, so we wouldn't need to put him on the 25 this year, but he could be mlb ready and healthy for 2019, and he throws absolute gas. He would be another 80 grade fastball
  14. I feel like Hahn is waiting until the last minute to make the changes so that hopefully the other teams have their rosters set and we can sneak some guys through waivers. If you assume Eloy and Jake Peter are on, it brings the roster to 38. With Vieira and the want to bring in some bullpen arms we might be able to flip, I have a feeling a lot of those guys aren't going to be on the final 40.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) While this is technically true, but providing more signing money to the teams that are the most likely and competitive to sign him they are decreasing their chances each day. We are not suitors for the guy. The way I see it, if we still have $300k we have enough to get our lottery ticket, but we also just gave another team more tickets. Yeah, we could still have a chance, and thats worth keeping, but getting something back for lessening that chance is fine by me.
  16. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:19 AM) Yeah I'm not sure. It would be nice if we are sitting right at the $300k max we can spend haha Yeah, I wouldn't doubt that Hahn kept us right at that amount.
  17. We just traded away more international bonus space, so I don't even know how much we have left. We got a pretty good prospect, so it may have been the rest of our pool.
  18. Let's keep it going with the 100+ mph guys! If they don't protect him, I say we go after Nick Burdi on the Twins in the rule 5 draft. He is injured and will probably be out for the year, so you don't even have to waste the spot on the roster this year, just get him ready to be on the big league club in 2019.
  19. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 11:02 AM) Chicago White Sox @whitesox 1m The #WhiteSox have acquired minor-league pitcher Thyago Vieira from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for international signing bonus pool money. Wow! That is awesome! He played in the futures games. Can easily reach triple digits. I'm excited to see what our pitching coaches can do with him!
  20. Yeah, considering he already has his original money, this would just be extra, so I don't think he would hold out until the next period to wait for more. Something someone else who knows more than me can answer, but would he even be able to stay in the US if he doesn't sign with a team? I don't really understand how the visas or whatever else works for international players. Because if he can't, he is from Venezuela and I don't know if he would feel comfortable going back there knowing he is about to get another big payday. I mean Baseball America was withholding signing bonus numbers for Venezuelan prospects for much smaller amounts to protect them. Maitan would probably be a big target.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 09:53 AM) Depending on when a judgment comes down, I wonder if he could wait until next July when more teams are in the running? It should like the decision should be coming pretty soon, so do you really think he would wait that long to sign? He would be missing out on spring training and like half a season. It might make him more money in the short term but could hurt his long term development.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 09:54 AM) He's done off season and spring training stuff for a number of years now, IIRC. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...1108-story.html From this article it sounds like he's been doing this since after the 2015 season and he was a spring training guest instructor for us and the Phillies in 2015.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 10:12 AM) That is a whole lot of castle built on a quick comp. In the long run the comp means nothing. Especially because all of those guys have less than two years of big league experience. They are still getting their own comps to other players! I just thought the interesting part of it was that those three (De Sedas, Turang, Madrigal) are considered the top three and that De Sedas is the best if he can stay at SS.
  24. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 05:03 AM) Would be nice if one of the AL teams that can spend more signs him or Otani leaving the other one still available. You'd have to think Maitan would be more likely to take the largest bonus than Ohtani who is already forfeiting hundreds of millions of dollars already and is looking for specific opportunities (teams that will let him pitch and hit). I wonder if Maintan will want to sign with a team where he is blocked on the left side of the infield with young players or prospects. The Yankees come to mind where they already have a solid young left side that would be hard to beat out.
  25. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Nov 15, 2017 -> 10:00 PM) Would depend if they he is regular free agent or falls back under the international rules. Most he would be able to sign with a team now is 3 million. Could become a marketing thing for teams depending on if he only wants money or actually looks at the team as a whole. The article stated he would be under international signing bonus restrictions. But you are right that most other teams also do not have money right now. There might a few weird signings to follow this offseason where money isn't the biggest determining factor.
