  1. QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 26, 2018 -> 04:59 PM)
Five years is stupid there is no reason to offer him that kind of length. I'd do 3/33 or possibly 4/42 backloaded with an opt out after two. Who are we bidding against?

Why back load it? If anything I would think front loading it would fit better. Payroll is low this year and a low salary would make him more tradeable if necessary in the future

This peripherals argument is weak. I look at his peripherals in 2016 and they suggest he is well on the road to done. Now his peripherals, like his traditional stats improve and suddenly he is a good flip candidate.

The trade was fine, but lets not talk about him being a good flip candidate. A good flip candidate gets you something interesting back. This guy will get you maybe, if all goes well, a 26 year old in A ball who throws 100 and walks about 1 an inning.

He will get you Jake Peters back.

Avilan will get you a little more than that.

That sounds like a fairly boring win situation to me, but a win nonetheless

Royals rebuild does not have the same luxury of tradeable assets that the White Sox did (Sale/Eaton/Quintana) that brought us Moncada/Kopech/Basabe/Diaz, Giolito/Lopez/Dunning, and Jimenez/Cease/Rose/Flete. That is a tremendous amount of young talent for any farm system to build upon. Those deals allowed the Sox to quickly build up a strong farm system, something the Royals won't be able to do. Duffy could get them a few nice pieces, and maybe Salvador Perez, but beyond that there is not very valuable assets.

The Royals should have started the rebuild a year ago and instead chose to go for it once more.

In fairness to the relative situations, they were a championship team trying to squeeze out the last drops of possibility.

I think you (not you, obviously) owe a championship team the opportunity to compete.

  4. If either of those guys are on the table (rather than the Red Sox saying straight out no), I would be happy to sweeten the deal with minor league talent. Would Abreu and Fulmer make it happen?

A late 2018 OF of Jimenez, Benintendi and Garcia brings a smile to my face.

In one of the more recent BA updates they said the players would be under signing restrictions, but it didn't say international bonus pools like other earlier reports were, so I wonder if MLB is going to do something different this time. They do have the opportunity to set the precedent because the only other thing like this was the Red Sox but that was under a different international system.

This is my thought as well. In theory, all other teams were damaged or put at a disadvantage by the Braves actions. The solution should be for all teams to be share equally in the solution.

He is 4th on the team in fWAR for position players at 1.6 and with his recent hot surge he's almost up to league average with the bat -- a quite valuable quality in a guy that plays 3B, SS, and 2B all above average.

Personally I'd be considering making him the starting 3B next year. He's earned that shot. If he's really a 2-3 WAR player it would behoove the Sox to give him another 500+ PA next year. He's still only in his age 24 season and will be hitting his prime just as the Sox are looking to contend in 2019-2022.

If nothing else he's proven that he'll have a 10 year career as a utility guy. Sox haven't had a player like him in quite a while. Remember when the "super utility" Bonafacio was on the roster? Ha!

Didn't they have exactly the same guy you are describing just last year in Saladino?

Just like Saladino this year, I wouldn't bank on Sanchez' performance to be repeated
