His bat to ball skills are so good that it can cause some issues with getting on base if he's not getting hits. MLB teams are going to able to shift the hell out of him so I would like to see him go to Charlotte and maintain the walk rate he has right now in Birmingham.

That being said, I think he'd be at least as good as yolmer right this second.

I don't think, given his speed and bat to ball skills, that anyone would be able to successfully shift against him. The holes in the infield are just too big in a shift, and he'd be able to but the bat on the ball and guide the ball where he wants it to go. His current hit chart would dissuade that notion also, as there are quite a few balls that go right where the shortstop would normally be.

What is the fascination with Mendick?

Though I never used to think about it, I've recently developed a rather unsettling fascination with Mendick. The prospect of watching Mendick hanging around multiple positions is intriguing.

Still young enough to where we can give him another year or two. But I wish he would hit for some more power too.

Why just another year or two? We should give up on him if he doesn't improve in a year or two? Let him go?

The guy had a .781 OPS in his age 21 season at a level where most were older than him.

Nassir Little just went to the Trail Blazers at #25.  They all think this is a steal cuz Little is top 10 talent.

Bol Bol is dropping cuz he will get pushed around in the NBA.  7’2” and 208 pounds?  ?

But couldn't an NBA training team easily get him up in weight? If he's there at 38, I really hope they take a chance. He'd be a better pick than Hutchinson, Valentine,  and really, any of their draft picks since 2011 not taken with a 7th overall pick.

  5. I don't think the cupboard is that bare.

They may not currently be ranked top 100, but there is still a chance the Rutherfords, Dunnings, Burdis, Adolfos, Basabes, Walkers and even the Gonzales and the Pilkingtons could become something.

We don't know what Burger might do, and heck, I'm still hopeful for Ian Hamilton and Ryan Burr.

I'm worried about his strikeouts but let's be frank, Zavala looked so bad when he came up that this is really your only option even if you think it's going to be temporary. Assuming Beef's injury isn't too severe, Collins may have an outside chance at playing Alonso off the roster.

I was just gonna come say that. I doubt,  even with how bad some of his ABs might be, that he'll be less valuable than Alobso and his -.8 war.

If you called up Eloy in May of 2018 how much less Eloy would you really be getting?

Also no one has any idea what the next CBA is going to look like so these dumb games may not have even netted the White Sox any extra Eloy.

It would be exactly 1 year less of cheap mid 20s on a contending team Eloy.

I don't believe new CBAs would affect current contracts.

Most other teams would put him on the roster right away.  They would have done it last year.  He was ready for MLB.  Look at the Red Sox, for instance.  When Benintendi, Betts, Bogaerts were ready, they brought them up.  Just because the Cubs did it, doesn't mean we should.

The Red Sox were World Series contenders. It makes sense to go for it when you can win. It doesn't make sense to do so during a rebuilding year.

This is wrong. Sox fans have frustrated me during the rebuild by NOT wanting the front office to spend money. They made the one exception for Manny and to a lesser extent Harper. Aside from them, any sign of the Sox paying for a player has been met with scorn. They were OK with Jay and Alonso at first as it was a ploy to get Manny. Now they're not happy about paying them anything. But unless it's an obvious deal where we are to flip the player ... Sox fans don't want us spending any money at all except for the few whales.

It's not just the fact that they were "whales," but that they were 26 year old top-tier talents who are and will be in the prime of their careers during the perceived window.

Tell me, which signing do we have to show that hits on even 1 of those qualities? Which signing should we be happy about?

  10. I've skimmed the thread and it appears we are all (obviously) in agreement that the 34 year old Jay and 32 year old Alonso will serve only one purpose this year.

And they will be very successful at it: leaving a bad taste in my mouth every AB. Even if they both match their career highs,  it is wasted on a tanking team praying that their traded for young guys turn out good enough to make a difference yet not good enough to command top dollar.

The key issue is the player opt out. Hahns comments suggest they are not fond of them because they are exclusively player beneficial hence the reason the Sox offer to Manny did not include any. This was likely one of the main nails in the coffin at our chances of signing him. The opt out he got from San Diego was after the 5th year, I still don't understand why the White Sox would care if Manny came and raked for 5 years and then opted out. We would of had him in his prime during the years we are hoping to contend.

I agree completely with the opt out. If they indeed put forth an offer of 8 for $250m, then 10 for $300 was actually an 8 year discount. If he opts out after 5, you save money during the 5 years, you make your fanbase happy, you increase attendance for 5 years, you jumpstart the rebuild, you get a gold glove all star at a position where you don't have a lot of minor league prospects for 5 years,  you don't even come close to having to pay him for years 9 and 10, and you don't even come close to the "$300 million level."

Hard to see how that is "exclusively beneficial to the player."
