What do you take from the 2017 season?
Squirmin' for Yermin replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 04:30 PM) 300 innings isn't really even a lot of minor league experience if you think about it. The kid is still learning on the job. You cant just keep using that excuse.. -
Let's do a Soler type sign.. 7 years, 30 million.. If he does become a FA

Rating the Rebuild: Completed Year 1 Edition

I went with a 9 simply because I am and was disappointed in the Yankees trade. -

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 03:50 PM) Not to derail but I agree 100% with this. I've just been disappointed in general with Rodon. Hopefully part of that was the discomfort he had in the shoulder. Totally agree. He has been a disappointment with little to no improvement since his rookie year. After this injury (he is injury prone) I wonder if it is best to try him out at closer and see if he can become a dominant closer or setup man (andrew miller type). I think that's how we max out his value from here on out. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2017 -> 09:32 AM) Now that the 2017 season is over, and we saw 162 games played at the major league level played, a lot of players traded away as well as brought into the organization... what are you going to take from the 2017 season as a White Sox fan? Our young players seemed to have all developed well apart from a few (Rutherford, Collins, Fulmer, Burdi) while also have some lower guys perform (Zavala, Stephens, Adolfo). Good year for the minors and our young core. I am happy with all of the trades except the Yankees trade. Seems we are a good prospect short. -
QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Sep 29, 2017 -> 02:08 PM) If Collins can bring an elite bat and average defense to the C position, he has 6+ WAR per year potential. So far we've seen a bad bat.. Let's hope the scouting was right coming out of college

I literally don't even remember what was wrong with him.. lol I'm down to give him a shot out of ST though... Why not? Engel is a bench guy (great D and runner) but not a starter.

Does Abreu fit into Sox longer term plans?
Squirmin' for Yermin replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Sep 29, 2017 -> 08:40 AM) Sounded like Hahn will start to discuss extensions in the middle of '18, with obviously only interest to extend Abreu and Garcia Abreu is the leader of this team and can still hopefully produce 2-4 more high level years, with him being a UFA in '20 there is 0 need to extend him now Garcia, just 26, still has to repeat success to show '17 wasn't a fluke, but I'd be thrilled with him as the long term RFer if he can prove that Next year's OD lineup of SS Anderson, 2B Moncada, 1B Abreu, RF Garcia, LF Delmonico, DH Davidson, 3B Sanchez, C Smith, and CF Leury looks like they can surprise a lot of people, especially in a weaker division...Not to mention the probable call-ups of LF Jimenez and C Collins next year along with CF Robert, 3B/1B Burger in '19 Next year's success in the W column really relies on pitching, which is off to a bad start with Rodon likely missing a month or so, but the rotation starting off '18 should feature Giolito, Fulmer, Lopez, and Shields (along with a cheap vet FA) with Rodon coming back in May and Kopech up in the summer 19's rotation should be Kopech, Rodon, Giolito, Lopez, and Hansen thus setting up '19 to be a major year and start of dominance for the ChiTown Sox Am I the only one that thinks Avi moves over to LF once Eloy (RF) gets called up? -

There is absolutely no need in extending Abreu before his contract expires. -

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 03:09 PM) Brian Bilek @BrianBilek_ #WhiteSox ? ? Brian Bilek @BrianBilek_ There will be news. Just keep peeping twitter every once In a while today F*** there can literally be nothing good that comes from this... -
QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 10:05 AM) I'll settle this once and for all with one simple question to all the people who are upset that we'll most likely pick 4th instead of 2nd or 3rd (I think we all conceded the top pick to SF a while back - though this tigers drop off has been out of the blue and sudden) Name the top 5 prospects in the draft by name and position without looking it up... I know the names Turang and Singer off the top of my head.. Exactly. In April it was TANK FOR BEER!!! Well guess what he's supposedly a mid to late 1st round pick now. Trout was what? 23rd? Pick 1 and 2 in 2014 was Brady Aiken and Tyler Kolek. Unless there is a Harper, Bryant, etc. at the top there are very few sure guys. From what I understand there are MANY solid players in this draft with no real standout. I wouldn't be surprised if the top pick 3 years from now was from someone who picked 10-20.. Let's look at the top prospects in all of baseball... Torres - signed Robles - signed Vlad Jr - signed Eloy - signed Acuna - signed Rodgers - 1st (3rd) Tucker - 1st (5th) Senzel - 1st (2nd) Kopech - 1st 33rd) Buehler 24 Honeywell 72 Brinson 29 My point? You have to trust our scouts ... This isn't the NBA where one player like Lebron wins you a championship. This isn't like NFL and NBA where a likely consensus top 3 guy is a guarantee.. the 1st round and top picks are littered with injuries and burn outs... if there is something to get bent out of shape about it is that our signing slots are less with each pick down... Look at the past. the higher pick you have the higher liklihood of actually hitting on that pick. Pick #1 has a better history than pick #26 for example and so on and so on.
-
QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 28, 2017 -> 09:18 AM) One way to look at it is that the Draft could be divided into 4 categories: Best H. S. pitcher, best H.S. position player and the same for the Top College prospects. So, even picking 4TH, you have the best of one of those categories, at a minimum. That should console those who are so disappointed that the Sox Draft position is slipping. Moreover, there is no consensus #1, 2 or 3. Hey, those who want Beer may get your wish. He could be a reasonable pick at around $5. I agree. I'm down for picking whoever. But the more we drop the more sense it makes to draft Beer and sign him slightly under slot while then going overslot on the 2nd round. You draft maybe one of the best college hitters we've seen in a long long time. I like it.

How do we solve our K/BB epidemic?
Squirmin' for Yermin replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 01:33 PM) One of the most encouraging developments over the last two years has been the Sox finally putting a premium on players who can take a walk (or at least have some track record of controlling the strike zone). Just off the top of my head...Collins, Call, Fischer, Burger, Sheets, Gonzalez, Yurchak, plus as a previous poster wrote maybe you can include Robert...that's a dramatic shift from the Jared Mitchell/Trayce Thompson/Tim Anderson athlete-first, ballplayer second model that reigned since the mid-to-late 2000s. Obviously not all of these players will find it as easy to control the zone as they did in amateur ball, but the simple fact that the ability to take a walk is now apparently valued by the club...eventually you have to think that will pay off. I have to think this is linked to Hahn establishing himself over Kenny '5:1 K/BB ratio' Williams (in an era of reduced strikeouts no less!) Regardless, it's a very welcome development and I'm hoping we'll see the fruits of that at the big league level as these players mature and, presumably, controlling the zone is stressed for everyone in the Sox minor league chain. Even many of the players we traded for seem to have a good handle on the zone. Moncada, Eloy, Basabe can draw walks. It definetely seems like there was a significant direction switch and I love it. Grab the ball player, not the athlete -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 01:27 PM) Can we change this banner? lol Moncada, Giolito, Jimenez, Lopez, Bruce Banner, I don't care just change it lol What abouuut Rick Hahn? After his great projected rebuild he deserves a banner for a little bit!

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 08:41 AM) Sox didn't really mess this up. Their young players are good and we are better than those other teams currently ahead of us in the draft pick race. It is nice to see our young players playing well heading into next season. Agreed. I can't be mad about us falling out of the top three when it is soley because of guys like Moncada, Giolito, Lopez, Anderson, Delmonico, and Garcia. I wish we had a top 3 pick but if we are 4th because of huge strides and promising strides from those players than it is hard to be upset about where we end up..

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 26, 2017 -> 02:27 PM) Nobody is good at taking walks on this team. I see this as potentially the single biggest issue with our lineup medium term. Is there ANYTHING to be done to help these guys take more walks? Anderson and Davidson have woeful ratios, Garcia and Abreu are below average. Delmonico seems like he might have this as an asset, and Moncada seems like he might be alright too.... How much of hinderance is this kind of ratio for the team? Yes. This is a massive issue. We just need to find guys that aren't swing happy in the draft (which we've been doing) and through free agency. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 26, 2017 -> 11:34 AM) The last time a true 1B prospect was taken in the top 10 was Eric Hosmer in 2008. Brendan McKay was taken this year, but the Rays are using him as both a hitter and a pitcher. I don't see Beer being taken in the top 5 unless he has a monstrous year. He has already had two monstrous years. I see him going in the 5-8 range.
-
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 26, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) Seems that way. Sure that's assuming everyone of them pans out.
-
We will draft Beer and sign him underslot at pick 4 or 5. Then pick the biggest faller out of HS with our second pick and sign them overslot to get them. That would make some sense..

Can Rodon become a quality mlb starter?
Squirmin' for Yermin replied to Dominikk85's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The dude is just always hurt... I wonder if its come time to explore him as a closer or dominate andrew miller type reliever. Maybe he can stay healthy that way -
QUOTE (hi8is @ Sep 24, 2017 -> 12:25 AM) I think you're being a bit hard on him and discounting the next stage of his evolution as a hitter... he really is primed to start stepping into his power next year. Get what you're sayin and all, thou. I laugh to myself when I see people still thinking Avi has power lol
-
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 03:19 PM) If TA is good (and Sox are picking up his two team options) and Turang is a top prospect, say top 10 in MLB, but is still 3-4 years away then the Sox can flip him for whatever they need to make a pennant push. I just really like the idea of drafting a top SS prospect. Those are rare and guys like Beer frequently drop into the 8-20 range. Sox aren't going to be picking top 3 again in 2019 if things go well next year development wise. I am not sold one bit that this team still wouldn't be bottom 3 again next year. They literally have 0 bullpen pieces and had career years from guys this year (Avi, Leaury, Yolmer, Davidson, etc). Plus our questionable (at best) starting pitching. I hope they all are for real but I just don't like those odds. I am not expecting much. But I'd absolutely love to be wrong.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) Hoskins with another big hit. 2-run double, Phillies up 4-2 in the 5th. Hoskins is my boy! I drafted him in my dynasty league in the 40th (last) round hahah

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 21, 2017 -> 01:30 PM) Seth Beer is a guy you take a chance on at the top of the 2nd round if he's available. There is potential for a generational bat, but if the glove doesn't play anywhere else, then your risk is ultimately way too high to draft him anywhere but there. I am guessing that Beer will end up in the back half of round 1 where a team can afford to take that risk, especially a team like the Yankees, whose system is among the deepest in the majors at the moment. There is absolutely no way Beer will fall outside of the top 10. He may be at the backend of that but his bat is unworldly. He won't fall far
