#12 prospect in the Cardinals organization

From MLB:

An Illinois prep standout taken in the second round of the 2011 Draft, Tilson is proving that perhaps it is not how you start, but how you finish. After missing his first full season with a shoulder injury, the speedy outfielder has put himself back on the map, including a 2015 season that saw him lead the Texas League in hits and stolen bases.

Speed is indeed Tilson's best tool and it can serve him well both on the basepaths and in center field. He improved in terms of his basestealing skills in 2015, but the Cardinals would love to see him become even more aggressive, which they think will help him cut down on his caught stealing rate. Tilson has a good idea of what he's doing at the plate, albeit without power. He draws walks, drops down bunts and uses the whole field. With more experience, he has the chance to be a tick above-average in center field defensively, though right now he still outruns mistakes he makes with his jumps and routes. He has a below-average throwing arm.

Tilson may profile best as a valuable fourth outfielder, though there's still a chance he can be a top-of-the-order catalyst and everyday center fielder.

Tilson featured on Fangraphs series 'The Fringe 5 - Baseball's Most Compelling Fringe Prospects' at the beginning of the month.

A number of things come as a surprise to the author. Like that he’s employed in any capacity, for example. And like that a human woman willingly co-habitates with him. It makes no sense. What else comes as a surprise is how St. Louis outfield prospect Charlie Tilson’s name has never appeared within this weekly column — not even among the Next Five portion of it, it would seem. Because here’s why that’s surprising: Tilson has exhibited the same combination of excellent contact skills and defensive competence that defines a number of the prospects who appear here — and he’s been relatively young for his levels along the way. What’s he’s lacked — and what’s ultimately been the cause for his absence — is power on contact. The three occasions on which he’s recorded more than 400 plate appearances at a level, Tilson has produced isolated-power figures of .085, .105, and .093. This year with Triple-A Memphis, however, he’s posted a .136 ISO so far. Even after adjusting for the higher run environment of the Pacific Coast League, that’s still his best career mark.

Tilson has been particularly excellent of late, recording a .407 ISO (including two triples and two home runs) over his last 29 plate appearances while also striking out zero times.

Tilson also featured at number 84 on the Fangraphs KATOH Top-100 Projection System:

Tilson, a Wilmette native and New Trier H.S. grad, was rated by Baseball America as the Fastest Baserunner in the STL organization in '13.

New Trier GM acquire New Trier minor leaguer. Somewhat sketchy IMO.

Anyways, not a huge fan at first glance. Guy looks like JB Shuck's replacement, i.e. a 4th OF. I obviously wasn't expecting a ton for Duke, but would have rather gambled on a lower level prospect with upside than a high floor, limited ceiling type.

Yeah, the thing with Duke is, he is one of the guys you don't have to move just to move...because you're going to need pen arms next year and he would be just as attractive at next year's deadline as this year's (if not more).

Maybe they actually like this guy, because there was no reason to give Duke away.
