Didn't strike out much at any level of the minors but always hit for a low avg with no power. If we are going to compete we need a better starting catcher. His minor league track record suggests he is nothing more than back-up catching fodder. With that said, he deserves more at-bats than Navarro. southsider2k5 Posted August 7, 2016 Share Posted August 7, 2016 To me it is obvious that the Sox have been hiding Navaez and playing him in advantageous situations. GreenSox Posted August 7, 2016 Share Posted August 7, 2016 He probably is a ceiling backup, and if Narvaez becomes a legitimate backup catcher, that would be pretty good. If the Sox are hiding him, I'm not sure who from, except perhaps from themselves. Let teams get the read on him and the Sox will find out what they have. Still don't see a downside to giving him the most pt the rest of the way. The key to a backup catcher, anyway, is the ability to handle the position defensively. I don't think this guys a major league starter but I don't see why he couldn't have some value as a backup. Or just move navarro to backup and let narvaez be starting to see if hes capable. Though as others have said, it's a very small MLB sample so far. And he's not necessarily out of nowhere. The club likes him, but figured he'd get another year to develop first. With the injuries to Avila, then Smith, and losing guys on the wire, the stack just kind of came together this way. For a guy who had like 3 months above A-ball, he's doing pretty well.
