Bob Sacamano
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 28, 2016 -> 05:50 PM) The Cy Young Award is for the regular season. I'm in the group that says post-season should count. Its definitely a variable people consider when voting.

Its definitely a variable people consider when voting. I believe that's unfair for pitchers on non-playoff teams. A starter could theoretically go 34-0 but if the rest of the team sucks, he misses the playoffs. That's not his fault. Sale is the closest example to that scenario over the past 5 years. Him pitching even better would not have made us a playoff team.

So you don't think those who are torn on say Porcello and Kluber (2 I feel are likely to win) won't look at how each performed in the post season to make a decision? Of course they would. OmarComing25
@keithlaw Zach Britton faced Pillar, Barney, Navarro. This is another reason making a one-inning closer Cy Young is just silly. Turn a lineup over. Got to agree with Keith here, pitching only one inning at a time means closers often miss facing good hitters. Plus, a lot of the elite starting pitchers could at least come close to what Britton is doing but the reverse isn't true. A bit reductive, I know, but this Britton for cy young thing is so ridiculous. It happens every year there is no clear cut winner ->give it to the novelty. ChiSoxFanMike
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Sep 29, 2016 -> 10:18 AM) Even if he does I bet most guys have their votes already in by then. You're probably right, but if he goes out and throws a shutout, or conversely, gets rocked, his ranking will probably change. I really think Porcello will win, even though Sale and even Verlander and Kluber are just as deserving.
flavum
If they changed the rules that it has to be a pitcher with at least 180 innings, I wouldn't have a problem with that. Then they could make a bigger deal for Reliever of the Year. That would be a good thing to do. But I think in a year where no starter has an ERA under 3, and Britton is perfect in save opportunities for a contending team, with a 0.55 ERA, and an 809 ERA+, I would vote for him. He deserves it under the current rules, and even a lot of advanced stat people agree. It seems like some are trying to make a case for Sale because he's "our guy". Even if it were just for starting pitchers, I doubt Sale would crack the top 3 right now, but I'd like to look at it more closely Sunday night when it's all over. Besides Porcello, Verlander, and Kluber, which AL starters have an argument that they've had a better year than Sale? I don't think he finishes worse than 5th. lasttriptotulsa
I don't think relievers should ever win the Cy Young anymore. It was one thing when they would pitch 100 innings a year but in this day and age where they throw 60-70 innings they are just not deserving. Give Britton the Mariano Rivera award and be done with it. To say that Britton has been a better pitcher this year than Sale, Kluber, Porcello, etc when he pitches one inning every couple days is an insult to what those guys accomplished in over 3 times as many innings. TheTruth05
http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/ken-ros...b-awards-093016 I don't care who wins as long as it's a starter. OmarComing25
Both Heyman and Rosenthal support Britton for Cy Young, but if they can justify Britton despite his lack of innings how do they both not vote for Kershaw in the NL? Jose Fernandez is ahead in one of those, but something like 6th-8th for the other. Regardless, Sale isn't going to finish Top 3 and Q will be lucky to sneak into the Top 10.
