Chisoxfn
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 14, 2016 -> 12:16 PM) While I do think your idea is terrible, welcome to Soxtalk! ? Saladino is a wizard in the infield and played there his whole life. I say let him be If we want to play Tyler in the outfield, I presume it is in that super utility role. That said, Tyler brings a ton of surplus value based upon his defensive value within the infield, so while putting him elsewhere can provide roster flexibility, we get the best overall value playing him at the premiere positions that he plays well above average defense (3B / SS / 2B). I think Tyler is an underapperciated guy that should be a cost-controlled starter. It would be great if he was a super bench guy who got plenty of at bats playing a variety of infield positions, but that would presume we had above average players at 3B / SS / 2B and that really isn't the case in full. I'd rather give at bats to Tyler than I would Lawrie and I'd even be open to having Tyler play 3B with Frazier DH'ing or learning 1B. Tyler is too solid of a hitter and too good of a defender, to not play more often, imo, and he has shown he has better offensive tools than I think people initially suspected and he just seems / plays like a very heady player. I'm a big Saladino fan though.
Dunt
Something interesting I saw today regarding Tyler Saladino: Player A 362 Inn 11 DRS 4.4 UZR 14.9 UZR/150 .972 FP Player B 319.2 Inn 2 DRS 2.7 UZR 14.3 UZR/150 .994 FP Saladino is one of those players and the other is highly regarded for their spectacular defense. Not much of a difference statistically. Here are their offensive lines: Player A .271/.308/.426 .312 wOBA 93 wRC+ Player B .280/.316/.418 .314 wOBA 94 wRC+

Pretty interesting to note the statiscal similarities despite the polar opposite of perceptions. Maybe Lawrie is pretty expendable.

Lillian
I turned the game off, before Tyler's 3RD hit. What kind of single was it? Was it a solid hit? The fact that he has responded to more regular playing time is very encouraging. Unlike many bench players, who become "exposed" with more playing time, he has only gotten better. It shouldn't be surprising that a guy with his baseball acumen would improve with more experience. Last night he was facing a tough right hander and was very solid, once again. It's hard not to really like the guy. If he can produce like this, as a second baseman, he is certainly a starter, in my opinion. He brings good defense, solid contact, a little pop, high baseball acumen, versatility and is very affordable. What's not to like? southsider2k5
And for the record, after last night Tyler Saladino has an OPS+ of 102 on the season. That is without including his plus defense on the season. Accorinding to Fangraphs he has put up about 1.2 WAR and about $9.7 million in value when he has played somewhere close to half a seasons worth of baseball. Going by baseball reference, he is at 1.8 war.
GreenSox
I like Saladino but more power and more walks would help a lot. I like Sanchez too. Sox would have been better off just using those 2 all year v. Lawrie. They can trade Lawrie, but won't get much; yea they didn't give much, but some occasional positive arbitrage out of his FO would be nice. Going by baseball reference, he is at 1.8 war. Thanks for posting this. And this is a guy who is still basically a rookie based on playing time. I think a lot of posters on here underrate him because he was never considered a top prospect and overall has underwhelming minor league stats. However, those of us followed him closely since being drafted always knew he had pretty solid tools with a decent amount of upside. His 2011 season at A+ clearly demonstrated that upside. And despite stalling a bit in the upper minors, he eventually worked through his issues and started hitting AAA pitching. If you look at his minor league BB & K rates, he's still got plenty of room for growth at the major league level. With his defensive & base running abilities, it's not going to take much more improvement with the bat to make him a 3 WAR player. Unless we acquire a Moncada type prospect, Saladino should be the starting 2B in 2017 whether we go for it or rebuild.
Lillian
Before going down with an injury in 2014, at age 24, Saladino had a very good season at Charlotte: Games 82 PA 325 AB 294 Runs 41 Hits 91 2B 16 3B 4 HR 9 RBI 43 SB 7 CS 1 BB 27 SO 50 AVG .310 OBP .367 SLG.483 OPS .850 He was on pace to hit 30 doubles, 8 triples, 18 HR, while driving in 85 runs, in a 162 game season. That's terrific for a middle infielder. This year, he had a terrific Spring, and has responded to increased playing time. If he finishes strong, over the next 2 weeks, he's my second baseman. At that position, he adds plus defense, and offense. Lawrie could be traded, or maybe he should return to catching, which is where he started. Incidentally, that's also where Saladino started. Maybe one of them should see if he can still get the job done, behind the plate. We could sure use help there. Either one of them would provide extraordinary athleticism, as a catcher. The Sir
Saladino has had an 18 game hot streak (OPS of .935 in that span). Before that, he was at a .674 OPS. That puts him dead last among qualified MLB 2Bs. Now at .738, there are only five MLB two-baggers below him (Phillips, Gennett, Panik, Utley and Harrison). Let's not act like Saladino is some proven hitter who can only be prevented from starting at second next year by the acquisition of Moncada or better. He's had a nice 18 games, but he's been BAD for most of his career. If regular Tyler (as in the player we've seen for 88% of his career) shows up and he's a starter, we are going to sink hard. greg775
I have players I despise, too, who have put up good numbers like Lawrie and Melky, but your hatred of Tyler Saladino is weird. I probably shouldn't hate Melky as he gets hits but I'm not a huge fan. I'd be OK with Tyler starting every day at second. On paper our new manager has a not bad infield of Frazier, Anderson, Saladino and Abreu. That's a playoff infield. Our catching is a huge problem. It's the catching situation of a last place team. Our outfield? Melky, Eaton and Avi doesn't cut it at all. Can't win with that outfield. DH is Morneau. He's a playoff team DH. Bullpen blows. Starting rotation is playoff worthy. Get to work, Mr. Hahn. Team isn't going to playoffs next year as it stands. Edited September 17, 2016 by greg775

And if we start him because of this hot streak, and he reverts back to his typical level, it'll be a small but meaningful contribution to the fact that you and I will be watching more s*** baseball next year.
