Historical summary of EVERY concert

With the ‘Chance The Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring Day!’ concert today at U.S. Cellular Field, I came up with an idea to name every concert throughout the history of both ballparks:

White Sox Park (1910 – 1912, 1962 – 1975)

Comiskey Park (1913 – 1961, 1976 – 1990)

(New) Comiskey Park (1991 – 2002)

U.S. Cellular Field (2003 – 2016)

guaranteed Rate Field (2016 – )

If anyone sees any errors, incomplete information, or missing concerts, please let me know. I also want to hear any interesting stories if you attended any of these concerts.

I am only including major concerts where the ballpark was rented out by a promoter when there was not a home baseball game. Mini concerts or video performances before / after baseball games are not counted. Live performances on small stages outside the park, or on the street and parking lots do not count. Other sporting events (football, soccer, professional wrestling, and boxing) are not included. But I decided to include roller derby and Pastors Joel & Victoria Osteen’s gathering. The internet is terrific for finding historical information and photos taken at previous concerts, so I am providing some insight and interesting links:

‘The Loop’s Day in the Park’

Journey / Santana / Thin Lizzy / Eddie Money / Molly Hatchet

I am surprised this concert wasn’t cancelled or moved, because the same radio station (WLUP) was involved that partnered with the White Sox for the Disco Demolition Night fiasco, held just a few weeks earlier on July 12th. Midge Ure was a member of Thin Lizzy at the time. Journey’s performance was recorded for a national syndicated radio broadcast, which is available on an unofficial CD, currently for sale at Amazon. Journey’s lead singer, Steve Perry, became a White Sox fan who attended 2005 post season games and the Championship rally and parade after Sox players adopted the Journey tune ‘Don’t Stop Believin’'.

‘Chicago Jam 1’

Beach Boys / Atlanta Rhythm Section / Pure Prairie League / Sha Na Na / Blondie

I heard that under 10,000 tickets were sold for ‘Chicago Jam 1’, and the Atlanta Rhythm Section did not appear. Attendance was much better on the 2nd day. WLUP was not involved with either show. Radio partner for ‘Chicago Jam 2’ was 95 ½ WMET.

August 19, 1979

‘Chicago Jam 2’

Foghat / Rush / The Tubes / Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes / Roadmaster

I found some great, up close fan photos of Rush at this link:

Here are Paul Natkin’s pro shots of Foghat at Comiskey Park. This one is actually Dave Peverett and Rod Price (not Craig MacGregor) possibly jamming to “Sweet Home Chicago” :

1978

August 5, 1978

‘Summer Jam 1’

Aerosmith / Foreigner / AC/DC / Frank Marino & Mahogony Rush / Walter Egan

Aerosmith returned to Comiskey Park for a 2nd time, after originally headlining the 1976 ‘World Series Of Rock’ fire concert. AC/DC, which was mostly unknown in America at the time, had played the previous night at the nearby International Amphitheater, opening for ‘Alvin Lee & Ten Years Later’. AC/DC returned to the Chicago area for a 3rd time on September 14th, 1978, a club show at B’Ginnings in Schaumburg.

Another great Paul Natkin photo. Here is Mick Jones of Foreigner along with a nice view of the crowd:

This is my favorite picture. Photographer Dean Simmon captured Angus Young of AC/DC as he travels through the Comiskey Park crowd during “Let There Be Rock”. I’m not sure if Angus is sitting on the shoulders of a roadie or singer Bon Scott. Check out the smiling girl wearing sunglasses! At the time nobody knows that 20 years in the future, at a new park built directly across the street, another AC/DC song titled “Thunderstruck” will be heard on the P.A. at the start of every Chicago White Sox home game.

‘Summer Jam 2’

Eagles / Steve Miller Band / Pablo Cruise

Here is an aerial photo of Comiskey Park which I believe was taken on the day of this concert (go to bottom of this link):

‘Summer Jam 3’ – CANCELLED?

Boston / Cheap Trick / Eddie Money

I think this concert was cancelled because I can not find any information on the internet. Here is the ad for the entire 1978 ‘Summer Jam’ series:

1976

July 10, 1976

‘World Series of Rock #1’

Aerosmith / Jeff Beck with The Jan Hammer Group / Derringer featuring Rick Derringer / Stu Daye

During the performance of Jeff Beck with The Jan Hammer Group, two fires started around the same time at the upper deck of Comiskey Park, sending out huge clouds of black smoke. The concert continued, however the 2 remaining concerts scheduled during the summer of 1976 were cancelled or moved. Major outdoor concerts in Chicago in 1977 were held instead at Soldier Field under the name ‘Super Bowl of Rock’.

Here is a Chicago Tribune article regarding the fire:

‘World Series of Rock #2’ – CANCELLED

Kiss / Uriah Heep / Ted Nugent / Bob Seeger The Silver Bullet Band

Here is a full page, color ad for all 3 concerts designed by Shelley Howard, that appeared on the back of ‘JAM’ poster magazine:

A newspaper ad showing ‘Bob Seeger The Silver Bullet Band’ added to the lineup (go to ‘Page 77 of 328’):

August 13, 1976

‘World Series of Rock #3’ – MOVED

Yes / Peter Frampton / Lynyrd Skynyrd / Gary Wright / Natural Gas

Due to the fire at Comiskey Park on July 10th, this concert was moved to Hawthorne Race Track, Stickney, IL (next to Cicero). Local opposition almost prevented this concert from happening at all, even at Hawthorne. A court battle emerged, and a judge allowed the concert to proceed but with a 6:00 PM curfew. The group ‘Yes’ could not use their laser show because they were performing during the daylight. The date of this concert was changed to Sunday, August 15th, 1976.

1975

August 29, 1975

James Brown / Ike & Tina Turner – NOT CONFIRMED

I remember Harry Carey and J.C. Martin mentioning this upcoming concert during Channel 44 broadcasts, but I can find any information confirming if the concert actually happened.

1972

September 15, 1972

Roller Derby: Chicago Pioneers vs. Los Angeles Thunderbirds

Over 50,000 fans attended this special event. The largest crowd to ever attend a roller derby game. A photo from Chicago Tribune archives and a short You Tube clip from that night:

The Beatles

Opening acts: Sounds, Inc. / Brenda Holloway / Cannibal and the Headhunters / King Curtis and His Orchestra / The Discotheque Dancers

Miller High Life Beer presents ‘Blues Under The Stars’

20 Big Acts Starring: Sam Cooke / Chuck Berry / Etta James / Marvin Gaye / The Impressions / Red Saunders and His Band / Stevie Wonder / Muddy Waters / Sugar Pie De Santo / Gene Chandler / Eddy Holland / The Marvelettes / Major Lance / Mitty Collier / Buddy Guy / And Many Others.

With 20 performers starting at 8:30 PM, I suspect each act gets to perform just 1 or 2 songs. I heard that Jimi Hendrix worked with Sam Cooke in 1964. I wonder if Jimi was there?

1943 – 1948

Saturday, July 17, 1948 (9th Annual)

This annual event, sponsored by the Chicago Defender, started at Soldier Field for the first 3 years. The final ANMF was held in the Fall of 1949 at the Coliseum.

Here is an excellent article explaining what the ANMF was about:
