Kyyle23
QUOTE (Knuckles @ Oct 23, 2016 -> 10:33 PM) They said something about Orioles backing out of the deal for Fowler, not sure which year tho. The Cubs resigned him after last year, yea, but they first acquired him from the Astros and then offered him arbitration after last year, which is part of the reason the Orioles backed out
SonofaRoache
QUOTE (SpankyEaton @ Oct 23, 2016 -> 04:02 PM) I don't trust them, but if we wait for JR to die and have the team sold for the team to be rebuilt, then it's going to take a long time to get into the postseason. I would rather them get started on the rebuild than be mired in mediocrity and keep acquiring has beens. The Sox don't need to rebuild and can't right now. The Cubs are building an NL dynasty and half the Sox fan base will switch over instead of watching a rebuild. The problem isn't that they need to rebuild. They need to hire people who know what they are doing in the front office and quality coaches with positive previous experience.

Yeah, because they offered him a QO and he declined it at first. Then he re-signed after he couldn't get a deal done with Baltimore.

caulfield12
Because he was originally acquired via trade...and probably would never have fought to come back as a FA had he not already been there first.
Bob Sacamano
Fowler is in the second year of Cubs stint. Originally acquired through trade. He was brought in through trade and re-signed. Without being with the Cubs last year, he likely doesn't sign so cheap this year.
The Beast
QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Oct 23, 2016 -> 10:57 PM) The Sox don't need to rebuild and can't right now. The Cubs are building an NL dynasty and half the Sox fan base will switch over instead of watching a rebuild. The problem isn't that they need to rebuild. They need to hire people who know what they are doing in the front office and quality coaches with positive previous experience. I highly doubt that Sox fans would jump ship and go to the Northside. For the record for all of you talking about the Fowler acquisition - my intent was to show that they originally acquired him through a trade. Kyyle23
QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 12:31 AM) Right....therefor he was acquired for this 2016 team as a Free Agent. Where is the all the confusion? no confusion, you are just being obtuse because you are Joe. He was acquired via trade, prior to any free agency, and that can be counted as part of the moves that this front office has made in the trade column
oldsox
I don't know if Sox ever offered Fowler a contract last off season, but if they had, and if it were accepted, then Sox lose the draft pick that turned out to be Burdi. No question that Fowler would have made the Sox better in 2016.
Lip Man 1
QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 09:07 AM) What type of acquisition was Paul Konerko to the White Sox? He came to the Sox originally in a trade for Mike Cameron. He resigned as a free agent with them after the 2005 season and then towards the end of his career. Technically he was both a trade acquisition and a free agent signing. Mark
flavum
If it wasn't already pointed out, it doesn't appear KW was out in San Diego last week. It was a false tip given to that guy.
ChiliIrishHammock24
QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 10:07 AM) What type of acquisition was Paul Konerko to the White Sox? What year? He was acquired via trade until he was an unrestricted Free Agent, then he was acquired via free agency. This is easy stuff. Bob Sacamano
I think Fowler is making less than he did last year so if angle is that they spent money on him to bring him, its not really true. Got a really good discount on him and paying less on him than last year.
caulfield12
$9.5 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016, $9 million in 2017 (mutual option, buyout is $5 million but obviously he will decline the guaranteed $9 million and declare for free agency again) The White Sox would have had to bid at least $20-21 million for two years, which still would have been a much better deal than for Melky or Robertson...but he wouldn't have put last year's team over the top, either. It would have taken Fowler and Desmond and at least one bullpen addition for the Albers spot. Edited October 25, 2016 by caulfield12
