Lip Man 1
QUOTE (Saufley @ Oct 25, 2016 -> 11:43 AM) In 2005 I was in Orlando during our 2005 World Series games. Just wondering what the media coverage was like and how it compares to what is on the airwaves and TV now? The coverage of the Sox during the 2005 playoff run was sustained and professional. It was not like the Cubs are getting now though with "over the top" hype, goofiness and unprofessionalism (i.e. reporters wearing Cub jerseys etc.) And I for one was happy about that. Now I grant you, certain organizations and individuals were not happy the Sox had gone as far as they did but never the less they did cover them. I think they got about the appropriate amount of coverage in the Chicago media.

I think they got about the appropriate amount of coverage in the Chicago media. Agreed. I'd say it was pretty similar to the coverage the Blackhawks have gotten for all of their Cups. Lead the news broadcasts, interrupted TV programming for clinchers, massive coverage of the parade, etc.
bmags
Yeah, the weirdest thing to me forever as a sox fan, is why the red sox and cubs droughts were so embedded into the lore of the sport, and then the white sox made it and ended their 88 year drought and ... it wasn't that interesting. No demons slayed. I took it as a badge of honor that we didn't care about that s*** but they hyperventilating about how "historic" this is that the cubs are in does push the buttons that middle school me would have died over. Between sharing a city with the Cubs and winning it all exactly one year after Boston did, the Sox "drought" is pretty much looked over in MLB history. That's just part of being a Sox fan. danman31
QUOTE (Saufley @ Oct 25, 2016 -> 12:43 PM) In 2005 I was in Orlando during our 2005 World Series games. Just wondering what the media coverage was like and how it compares to what is on the airwaves and TV now? Glad you asked this. I was in college out of state during 2005 and being back in Chicago now, this is the first time I felt any regret over not being here for 2005. I didn't care about missing all the local media hysteria because I was just happy it was happening. The s*** this year is literally everywhere and I can't take it. Would have been nice to soak it in during the 2005 run.

klaus kinski
Cubs columnists were complaining about balls/strikes in 2nd inning of game 1 on Twitter. Better never hear them whine about Harrellson again
Jose Abreu
QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 06:36 AM) Cubs columnists were complaining about balls/strikes in 2nd inning of game 1 on Twitter. Better never hear them whine about Harrellson again What's funny is that it was pretty consistent both ways. They would've lost no matter what the zone was yesterday. NorthSideSox72
QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 26, 2016 -> 05:59 AM) No Facebook or Twitter to amplify it. I think that's key. Social media in 2005 was nothing like it is now, which makes it really hard to truly compare. Also, one thing that always bothered me but couldn't be helped - that 2005 team did not clinch anything in Chicago. The clinched the division at Detroit, ALDS in Boston, ALCS in Anaheim and WS in Houston. So we never got that hometown party. That may also have had an effect on media coverage in some way. Dick Allen
I think for what can be compared, the coverage seemed about equal. I went to every home playoff game so I didn't see any coverage then. But they covered the road games and clinchers well IMO. And read those articles about how the Sox were slighted by CBS, ESPN, and the joker with the Washington Post who said Red Sox fans were the only ones who could relate to the long championship drought the Cubs and Indians are going through. Read the Cubs fans comments at the end, and for all those who ever questioned why White Sox fans want the Cubs to lose despite having friends and family who are fans of the team, you will have your answer. bmags
Found this yesterday http://www.espn.com/espn/columns/story?id=...ciechowski_gene I remember coverage being great. But yeah, twitter/facebook now and the national coverage obviously wasn't there. There was a lot of dumb whining about "markets" even though houston/chicago was 3 and 4. WhiteSoxfan1986
I thought the coverage in 2005 was real good. Now there's Twitter and Facebook to amplify things. Cubs coverage is just different due to the fanbase. The media is appealing to the lowest common denominator, therefore you get the stories with people being interviewed at bars, etc.
