Yeah, we talked about Moncada a lot in the weeks leading up to the Winter Meetings and I don't think we ever assumed anything other than the Red Sox would be paling that money. In fact, some folks thought that is the very reason they thought the Red Sox would never deal Moncada.

Not until I saw the posts and tweets saying that the Red Sox were doing us some favor by picking up money did I think otherwise.

Eating that much money would've likely been a problem for a number of teams, but the Red Sox definitely can afford it.

Remember a month ago, the buzz was that Dombrowski was willing to move anyone but Moncada and Kopech... things change. #WhiteSox

Heard that 200 times glad DD continued his trading farm system ways.

Well it's money already spent and budgeted. They just took on Sale's salary minus Moncada's and functionally it's like they just traded for Sale at 3 years 100 million (adding on what they invested in Moncada). But yea, they were certainly one of 3-4 teams that could afford Moncada's initial price tag.

Short chat with #Whitesox owner Jerry Reinsdorf: "Boston knows what it got (Sale). We hope we know what we got." #Redsox

Kind of a cryptic message from the chairman.

What a sunny comment, Jerry. Sour Sally.

Most Red Sox fans calling into this weei radio show saying they can't believe this is all they had to give up

Bad sign. But don't try to convince any of the people here who want to blow it all up just because that we got poor value. Watch us end up worse off than before in 4 years with no trade pieces.

Well, we know where the constant "win now" mandate came from, even when it was against the team's best interest.

Very hard to find a Red Sox fan that you don't want to punch in the face.

Beforehand, Sale wasn't worthy of a prospect like Moncada or Benintendi. Now, Sale was clearly worth way more.

I'm just confused at how the deal was made so quickly considering the return. I wonder what Hahn was demanding prior to the agreement. I really hope he puahed hard for Devers..

That's funny. 2 days ago the Red Sox fans of the internet were saying that Moncada wasn't worthy of getting Sale. Now the trade happens and they win it. That being said, I am disappointed we missed out on another piece or 2 just so Boston would pick up all the money owed to Moncada.

That wouldn't have been a problem if we had competent scouts and front office personnel over the last 5 years. We could've filled the holes with our farm like every other team can do.

This makes no sense. If we end up worse than we are now in 4 years it's not because of this trade as Sale only has 3 years left on his deal & if he's great in 3 years he's gone. The whole point of the trade is to NOT be better now, but to be better in years 4+

JR, quit your whining, I know you are passionate and it's hard to admit defeat, but still. . You own the team and have failed to pony up for top free agents and settled for half-assed mid-tier win now moves for 11 straight years now. This would have been avoided if we started rebuilding after that horrific 2007 season where we had to deal with gems such as Jerry Owens, Andy Gonzalez, and Ryan Bukvich, oh and Josh Fields! Sure, we won the division in 2008, but it wasn't really beneficial in the grand scheme of things. Acquiring Junior? Yeah, that was a great sentimental gesture. Love him as a player and he's an extraordinary person. Yes we ended up giving up Nick Masset, so practically meh. Dwayne Wise, Brian Anderson? I am forever grateful for 2005, but we were lucky in 2005 & in 2008, especially scoring with TCQ. Jerry, this was long overdue. Case in point, if you want this team to be successful for the foreseeable future, shut up and let Hahn do his job, and maybe open up the pocketbook for Free Agents sometimes. You HAVE TO pay to play sometimes, Jerry. Can't always be cheap. /rant

We got a few good prospects but this deal falls far short of what a good GM could get for Sale. They better be sure Moncada is a future all-star or this is one of the worst trades in franchise history.
