Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go

The show on MLBN I was watching yesterday, where Heyman basically said there was very little chance Q went to Pittsburgh or the Yankees, whoever the host was mentioned when twitter got all in a flux about the Nats and Sale, the Red Sox made the trade. He mentioned this to Heyman and said can it be Houston will be trading for Q soon basically asking Heyman if these insiders were being used, and of course Heyman said he is sure it has happened but really doubts anyone is being used. They are all being used. Otherwise, there really is very little use for them if you think about it. Maybe Pittsburgh will give up the prospects, maybe the threat Q is off the table makes Houston up its offer. But obviously someone is getting antsy.

It seems to me that people are overrating what Bell really is...Bell, Glasnow, and Newman does nothing for me honestly. Bell is a below average 1B/DH who doesn't have even close to elite game power. I know he's a big strong guy and the power is supposed to be there...but it's not. Don't get me wrong, he's a nice prospect and should be a productive player. I just question how productive he's going to be for him being a defensive liability. I see him as a Brandon Belt type with bad defense. Again, nice player, but not the #1 position player we get back for Q. Has to be more.

What I find so very interesting at this juncture is that, unless I missed it somewhere, I've seen nothing come out of the Pirates' camp suggesting Meadows is "untouchable", the way it seemed the message on Bregman and Torres/Frazier was sent out almost immediately by Houston and the Yankees, respectively. Obviously if Meadows is in play in some fashion, that puts Pittsburgh in the catbird seat, as Hawk would say, in this competition for Q's services. And I, for one, am just fine with that, because the various packages from Pittsburgh including Meadows and any combination of some of the other guys they have in their system (I happen to find Newman quite intriguing) seems like a tremendous haul for Q.

I could have sworn there was a tweet recently that said they had no intention of trading Meadows because he is the heir apparent to Cutch

You might want to re-read the Samardzija trade thread.

Of course Trayce Thompson is a prospect you build a team around. And when he was Glasnow's age, an age where you say he should be ready for a rotation spot, he was hitting .229 in AA striking out at an alarming rate.

He's one you keep, esp when you have no one else in CF. These non-elite prospects who can produce at league average levels would have certainly helped, perhaps allowing the Sox to spend the $17 million on a real player instead of Rollins, Justin Turner, etc.

But the Sox got Dunn with a glove and a good attitude, so all is well.

If Meadows is untouchable then I can't see how them doing any deal for Quintana makes sense until they know what can happen with McCutchen.
because of

If the Pirates are reluctant to part with Meadows because of questions about McCutch, then offer to throw in May or Engel or Tilson.

You guys think it's going to happen today? Rosenthal tweeting something about it makes me think it's close to a done deal.

I bet it gets done before or on early Saturday. No way to really say though. We need a comment from someone with connections.

I'm on pirates.com message board and they're saying they need to make a trade for Q at all costs. One guy said trading Glasnow is ok because Q is in the rotation for almost as long as he would be but Meadows would be a tough loss. Same guy said if Meadows is in the deal, then they would be able to deal McCutchen over the next year or so with Bell could go back to LF with Marte in CF.

Yes, just looking at twitter, the Pirates fans seem much more enthusiastic than the Yankees or Astros fans.

The Astros may be tainted because they have traded a bunch of prospects over the past couple of seasons with less than stellar results.

Yep. It's when everyone believes it's going to be 1 team who makes the deal that almost always a totally different team moves in and gets it done. Still think that team would have been the St. Louis Cardinals had Reyes not been as good as he was last fall. The pressure to win in STL is always VERY high and they wouldn't want the Pirates to get him with the Cubs already ahead of them. Reyes, Kelly, + +. Now I think Reyes is too much a part of their plans for 2017 for them to move him for Q, as his fall earned him a rotation spot. Right now, I think they are a top 20 prospect away from being able to supplement a deal with Weaver/Carson/Bader etc.

It is much easier to list the ones that were good TBH.

Gio Gonzalez is the only one I can remember off the top of my head.

Edit: Forgot about Semien lol but even then the trade was fine, it just didn't work out.

Again, that's more than they got for Sale.

Maybe replace Glasnow with Keller? So it would be Meadows, Keller, Hayes, Diaz. Or what about adding Jennings to the other proposed deal?

Cole, Quintana, Nova, Taillon, Glasnow...not too shabby for PIT.

I'd say Pittsburgh is in the lead but well see if Houston ponies up or if New York is like Boston and tops everyone.

Could be wrong, but I have a feeling the Yankees aren't really involved. Probably let the young kids play this year to see what they have going forward, deal Tanaka at the trade deadline or before and get back some solid prospects, and then look to sign 2 arms in free agency next year since it's loaded.
