QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 7, 2016 -> 08:46 AM)
Tomorrow (Thursday) at 8am CT is the Rule 5 draft. Given the White Sox are rebuilding, it's possible they could use one of the two current open roster slots for a pick. They also have a couple guys at risk of being selected away.

Here's a preview of who they might add and who they might lose.

They should take Cave and see if they have any luck developing him into a quality regular.

Article updated for:

--Turns out the raised costs - 100k for MLB phase and 24k for minors phase - are actually for THIS year, so that is now reflected.

--Added note that not only did Sox get Tago in minor league phase in 2014, they also got Omar Narvaez in minor league phase in 2013.

One could argue the Sox have done better with the minor league phase than the major league one in the last few years.

Draft starts in 10 minutes. Update here if you wish, this can be the Rule 5 thread.

From MLB Pipeline.

Covey was #20 prospect in Oakland's system.

The Brewers made Covey their first-round Draft pick (No. 14 overall) in 2010, and he was set to sign with them and begin his pro career until a post-Draft physical revealed that he had diabetes. He ultimately decided to stay close to home and attend the University of San Diego, where he produced mixed results in the Toreros' starting rotation before going to the A's in the fourth round of the 2013 Draft. He struggled initially but broke out at Class A Advanced Stockton in 2015, and was building on that success in '16 at Double-A Midland when he landed on the disabled list in early May with a strained left oblique.

Covey can run his fastball up to 95 mph but typically sits between 91-93 mph, with heavy sinking action that results in a ton of groundball outs. His above-average curveball is his best secondary offering, and he's become more adept at mixing his slider and changeup, though neither pitch is particularly advanced.

Covey made some strides with his control in 2015 but continues to miss fewer bats than his stuff suggests he should, thus limiting his upside as a starter. But with his deep arsenal and a knack for generating weak contact, he still has a chance pitch in the big leagues.
