How about Chris colabello? Why can't we pay him $10M. We'll have plenty of financial flexibity to add a piece or two like him.

I really hope we take on some bad expiring contracts if it means a prospect comes along with it (like what the Braves have done).

caulfield12
The Padres are projected to be paying over $30 million to players on other teams this year...might even be more than their own players. Wil Myers could be the only one over $1 million barring a trade.
Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 06:43 AM) I guess it just makes me gag to have 2/5ths of our rotation and 40% of our budget be the great San Diego padres rotation. I feel ya, but if Ross regains form he can be an incredibly valuable trade chip. And honestly, if the Sox were smart, they'd sell players like this on their ability to keep pitchers healthy and productive. Whether it's Ross or someone else, we should be able to convince a guy or two that we can offer them an environment that other teams can't. GreenSox
Rasmus -keep Avi at DH Derrick Holland - if cheap. Don't need relief pitchers Will have to find a vet stopgap catcher soon esp if pitching prospects start moving up. That was another smart thing Theo did Edited December 8, 2016 by GreenSox

bmags
There are no good defensive catchers. And I hate idea of pairing Rodon with garbage again. Maybe suck it up with Pena?
GreenSox
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 07:06 AM) I disagree. They have numerous young relievers on the 40 man. See what these guys can do. If not, is why protect them?

Maybe suck it up with Pena? Pair Rodon up wity Narvaez. Let a year signing of Wieters (potentially) or someone else catch the other garbage we sign and Shields. Al Lopez's Ghost
All these young pitchers need a good pitch framer behind the plate. Metrics showed we got killed last year by Navarro and Avila in getting low strikes called strikes. I have no idea who that catcher will be, but it will be vitally important for the kid pitchers development.
Bob Sacamano
How is Smith defensively? Could we platoon him and Narvaez? Any possible cast-offs on other teams that are good defensively? Maybe try to acquire Montero? Don't know.

caulfield12
They can't go with both Smith and Narvaez when they're breaking in Fulmer, Burdi, Giolito and Lopez. They'll need at least one veteran "mentor" type...as there's almost zero likelihood either of those guys are capable of taking 75-80% of the playing time offensively, and in this case defense is even more important to protect the young pitchers' confidence. Chicago White Sox
I'd definitely look into buying low on Kevin Plawecki. His bat has been horrific at the major league level, but he hit pretty well in an extended stint at AAA last year. More importantly, I think he can be an average defender and a very good framer. Not sure what they'd be looking for, but he'd make a lot of sense for us in a rebuilding season IMO.

Bob Sacamano
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 8, 2016 -> 10:24 AM) Miguel Montero would be the ideal acquisition. I agree. We have financial flexibility and he wouldn't cost a lot. Cubs pitchers liked throwing to him and I think he was a positive mentor towards Contreras (who still needs work himself). bmags
Montero may not cost much but still not sure what we have to offer unless they want salary relief itself (which they may...)
