What I experienced in the Philippines felt like a new level of ruthlessness: police officers' summarily shooting anyone suspected of dealing or even using drugs, vigilantes' taking seriously Mr. Duterte's call to 'slaughter them all.'" caulfield12
Have spent about six months over the last decade in the Phils, mostly Manila and Cebu...just sent this photo essay to one of my friends who said she was originally in favor of Duterte (they're from same hometown, Davao.). She's VERY Catholic, as well. Interested to hear her reaction/s.

How come I was told to cut it out when I was calling her Hilly and Crooked Hilly and we're calling him 'crooked Donnie?' He's the President of the United States, folks. I'd show him some respect or maybe move to Canada. I mean I wouldn't vote for him as is my right to abstain with 2 horrible candidates, but he is my president now. I wasn't crazy about Obama except for his Sox and Chicago fandom but I never showed him disrespect. Let's face it there are inconsistencies on this board which leans Democratic over Republican big time. Edited December 9, 2016 by greg775

caulfield12
Greg, nobody would have banned you for that. We've just learned to accept that respect for the office of the presidency has gone out the window since Nixon. Remember all the "you lie/d!" stuff with the congressman confronting Obama? Calling Hillary or Trump "crooked" is nothing. I've sometimes called him PT Trump. Even Newt Gingrich, his close advisor (supposedly) says he's 1/3rd PT Barnum but hopefully more Harry Hopkins (FDR's close advisor).

Quin
Lol at this respect the president schtick. Not after eight years of blatant disrespect of Obama from colonial LARPers and Republicans in Congress. Not for the man that ran a campaign built on xenophobia, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, etc. But to bring it full circle, Greg, you gonna respect Duterte? caulfield12
The irony is that dictators (even in a democracy like the Phils) usually start out with huge popularity and almost all of the people behind them...so, despite viewing the drug killings/vigilante-ism from a Western perspective, that doesn't mean that there isn't a large majority supporting the strong man approach to the problem. That said, Leni Robredo (VP, she's from another party, as the Pres/VP aren't elected together, she narrowly beat Marcos' son) has resigned from the position and is trying to lead an opposition party against Duterte, but she's already being attacked for being a high society/social climber/1%er and not really connected to the needs of everyday people, either. People want action...not talk. Something concrete (see Trump/Carrier/union negotiations) or at least the perception that someone is fighting for THEM.
