That dude is cooked. He needs to retire.

Agreed. He's a 37 year old DH. Teams won't be lining up to give up good or even interesting prospects for him in July. Just don't see the upside in signing him. There's plenty of other guys better/similar to him but younger still out there in free agency.

On the other hand, you might get stuck with guys like Rasmus, Alvarez or Carter (at $6-10 million) and not be able to unload them (or that they will be exposed to zero lineup protection if we trade Abreu, Frazier and Cabrera)...a number of posters have argued that we overpaid for Holland, but at least he and Miggy and Shields can help mentor the younger pitching prospects.

The obvious problem is that (for now) we don't have enough position prospects who merit MLB playing time in 2017.

Great. I have zero issue being stuck with a bad player making $10 million. We've had several each of the past few years. The difference here would be - if we're stuck with a bad player for $10 million it doesn't cost us a division title shot when we have to put them on the field. We're in a position where we have money available but just started accumulating decent talent. Anything that turns money into future talent is a potentially solid investment.

If the Phillies wanted to give us a player to pay Ryan Howard's salary for a year, fine. If the Tigers wanted to give us a player to clear Anibal Sanchez, I'm listening.

Agreed. And there's definitely alternative options out there I'd rather sign and try to trade in June/July like Adam Lind.

All that signing this guy will do is crowd out the necessary and important auditions of younger players. Some of these young players will be part of the next good Sox team and some won't. It's time to find out about the Coats, et al.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that not a single player that has been talked about as an OF starting next season will be on the White Sox next playoff roster. Tilson? Coats? May? Engel? No. There is a better chance of getting a reclamation that actually works out for us, and we trade him for a player that can be a contributor, than there is of those guys being good.

Get a clue dude. Engel is Soxtalk's second coming of Trayce Thompson! Just wait, you'll see and then you will become a believer. :P

He hit 25 home runs in 330 ABs last year. He'll be cheap. He wouldn't be my first option, but I wouldn't hate it either.

If no team wanted him with the Phillies offering to pay almost all of his remaining deal last year, no one will want him next year.

A minor league deal? Or a $1M deal? Who cares? Why not?

I'm saying from out standpoint it doesn't make sense. We plug him in against righties and he hits 25 homers. And no one trades for him. That does us no good. We should be getting guys already here at bats to develop or sign guys to potentially flip.
