Of all the examples of the wealthy elite raising the ladders behind them so nobody else can join, preventing punishment of any bad behavior and consistently rewarding failure among the ranks, Mark Penn still being around has to be up there.

His firm got the Obama library. He still has work somehow after the Scroogled campaign for Microsoft. He's failed everywhere he's been, has been hilariously wrong on any historical event he had the opportunity to write down his idiocy on, and yet, he shows up at the cocktail parties and is a good guy, so could you just give him another chance?

I was going to ask "who on earth puts stock in what Mark Penn thinks?" but yeah, this. This is as clear a sign as any that there are still a lot of Bad Dems at the top who aren't learning the right lessons (or any lessons at all) in the wake of 2016.

I do love Jimmy. He should go whack Mr. Trump on the knuckles and wake him up.

A Better Deal

This message, this announcement, this re-branding is SO on point. I'm excited.

House Democrats are fighting to make sure that all working people know that somebody has their back. By giving our communities the tools they need to thrive, and empowering American families and workers, we will unlock unprecedented economic growth that will lead to better jobs, better wages, and a better future.

To unlock that future, Democrats are focusing on three goals:

■ Raise the wages and incomes of American workers and create millions of good-paying jobs: Our plan for A Better Deal starts by creating millions of good-paying, full-time jobs by directly investing in our crumbling infrastructure and prioritizing small business and entrepreneurs, instead of giving tax breaks to special interests. We will aggressively crack down on unfair foreign trade and fight back against corporations that outsource American jobs. We will fight to ensure a living wage for all Americans and keep our promise to millions of workers who earned a pension, Social Security and Medicare, so seniors can retire with dignity.

■ Lower the costs of living for families: We will offer A Better Deal that will lower the crippling cost of prescription drugs and the cost of a college or technical education that leads to a good job. We will fight for families struggling with high monthly bills like childcare, credit card fees, and cable bills. We will crack down on monopolies and the concentration of economic power that has led to higher prices for consumers, workers, and small business – and make sure Wall Street never endangers Main Street again.

■ Build an economy that gives working Americans the tools to succeed in the 21st Century:: Americans deserve the chance to get the skills, tools, and knowledge to find a good-paying job or to move up in their career to earn a better living. We will commit to A Better Deal that provides new tax incentives to employers that invest in workforce training and education and make sure the rules of the economy support companies that focus on long-term growth, rather than short-term profits. We will make it a national priority to bring high-speed Internet to every corner of America and offer apprenticeships to millions of new workers. We will encourage innovation, invest in advanced research and ensure start-ups and small businesses can compete and prosper.

IT’S TIME TO PUT GOVERNMENT BACK ON THE SIDE OF ALL AMERICANS, NOT JUST THOSE AT THE TOP. IT’S TIME FOR A BETTER DEAL.

To win in Trump era, liberals must first listen to his voters

My 3 part op ed series (oped, GOP response, my response back) is out in USA Today. Editors changed some language I don't love, but hey, that's life ;)

Wow, congrats on getting a platform that big.

e: can't say I agree with your take on the Dem's new branding. It's so boring and bland. It seems focused-grouped to hell and back without any real big-ticket items people will be drawn to and can rally behind.

Why are they always pulling their punches. Just say -

1. 15 dollar national minimum wage.

2. Single payer healthcare and free tuition for public colleges.

The third point they made is fine I guess. It's just nothing really concrete either. A better third point would have been a new foreign policy.

I don't remember, are you "working class" or no? Because much of this is the same type of rhetoric Bernie was using to mobilize that demographic. It's smart and effective.

Harkening back to The New Deal, while simultaneously creating a dig at Trump and his "deals", this is as good and clear a message as you're going to get. What else better competes with MAGA? I haven't heard a better one.

And thanks. Appreciate that.

They literally said 15 dollar minimum wage over and over in the presser.

Honestly, anyone who's curious should check out the unveiling event from today. Schumer et al. did anything but pull punches. I was really impressed by their candor, clarity, and willingness to take a hard line on the issues they need to if they're going to become a party of the working class again.

I am not, but Bernie was presenting clearer and stronger plans than some technocratic fiddling at the margins, which is what this comes across as to me. From the more hardcore left-wingers I know, they're all basically rolling their eyes at this and think it's just the same centrist dem message as always that nobody really wants to hear.

Medicare-for-All and Free College or something along those lines are pretty straight forward messages. "We'll give your bosses a tax break if they institute some retraining programs" isn't exactly a showstopper, and historically it's a bad program anyway. What's this platform's messaging/branding equivalent of MAGA?

Maybe they were saying $15 minimum wage in their presser (that wasn't really covered and few will ever watch), but it's not a bullet point in their message, it's not what's made headlines, and it doesn't seem to be what anyone is really taking away from this. And, FWIW, LBJ tried out "better deal" back in the 60's and that message fell flat, which is how they ended up with Great Society.

That's good, but I would still like to see them keep it simple. The slogan should be "We are going to raise the damn minimum wage".

That's not broad enough and hurts with small business owners.

BUT DID YOU WATCH IT? haha

It's really a shame that the presser took place simultaneously with Kushner's, because you would have heard things from Schumer you haven't heard before. The folks who I've spoken with who watched came away impressed regardless which side of the party they were on.

I hope they keep up the type of rhetoric that was on display out there today, because I think it'll work.
