2017 Democratic Thread

I am not sure I could disagree more. White collar crime like bribery can cause just as much societal damage, either it be through distrust of institutions or in some cases schemes that end up in death like Ryan, but get viewed as harmless since they weren't holding guns to peoples heads.

They deserve the same punishment. They were given power, they knew better, they took advantage. They don't deserve a soft landing.

Should those accused of cyber crimes just get house arrest?

If they can't use computers, etc. Ryan is out now. Blago will be out in a few years. Put an ankle bracelet on him. Make him stay at home. Everyone wins. He still is stuck, but at least his daughters and wife have their father and husband. And taxpayers don't have to pay for his jailing.

Take away these losses and you take away the deterrent. That's literally all we have to stop these people from doing corrupt things. If all they had to do is get out of politics and pay a fine, EVERYONE would do it and work really hard to put off getting caught until they're older.

Frankly I'd increase the penalties for corruption. Make some examples of people. There should be more criminal charges and longer sentences. And if it's money involved, they should pay every dime back.

We basically let an entire felonious industry walk away scot free from 2008-2012. The worst of it from a legal perspective was the mortgage fraud settlement - the banks literally stole millions of houses they could not prove they owned and signed a form with the government saying "Here's a small check please stop paying attention to this". They walked away with hundreds of billions. I'd do that fraud again right now if I could.

One of the leaders in that sytematic fraud is our current treasury secretary.

There has been a Senate tradition whereby when a judge is considered for nomination to serve in a particular state, his nomination would be approved by the senators of the state signing off on it through something nicknamed a "Blue Slip".

The Democrats honored this tradition when they were in office. 18 of Barack Obama's nominees were not approved and had their nominations expire because one or more Republican senators from that state did not issue a Blue Slip - even when they would have been likely approved.

The Republicans will no longer follow this tradition and will approve their judges regardless of the approval of senators from their home state. They will be able to fill these 18 open seats in part because of it.

So Blago is in jail. Ryan was in jail. Politicians are still corrupt. They are only going to get more corrupt because of the system. It costs so much money to win an election they are almost all in to someone.

It doesn’t blow my mind or anything, but kinda shocked how effective Rahm is at clearing the field when he’s this unpopular

Pretty amazing. I voted for him initially. Didn't vote for him in the primary but did in the general election his second time, and vowed not to vote for him ever again. If a better candidate doesn't emerge, I am leaving that portion of the ballot blank or writing in someone as a protest.

He initially looked like he was going to be good, but he's all about who is ponying up cash. I live in the Gold Coast, right on the border of Old Town. It may seem simple, but on the Gold Coast side of Clark, all new sidewalk. On the Old Town side, sidewalk repairs here and there. That was about 2 months into his reign. I knew all I needed to know then.

Yeah pretty much same. But seems like a lot of the good talent that could have ran against rahm went after Rauner. And I swear it's going to end up being like Rahm vs. McCarthy and ugh.

Let’s be fair to coverage from both sides.

I’ll ask once again, how does this benefit all Americans?

That’s what you get when Mnuchin, Ross, Cohn and Tom Barrack are giving Trump most of his economic advice.

Why Peter Navarro hasn’t resigned yet is beyond me.

Should Dems turn on Bill Clinton (based on standards of today)?

Yes, they should demand his resignation.
