Jake
For those who aren't familiar, Cabrera has had some off the field issues: March 2012 — Arrested for domestic violence against his wife. She said at the time that he hit her in the face and had slammed her head against a wall. He said that she had been hitting him and throwing glass kitchenware at him, causing him to act in his own defense (I don't think he conceded the head-slamming or striking her face). He said that scratches on his hand were from her lashing out at him. I did not see anything about physical harm to the wife. June 2012 — Cabrera shows up in court after rejecting plea deals, wanting to clear his name. Prosecution drops the charges without explanation. February 2013 — Biogenesis docs are leaked, Everth Cabrera's name is included among the clients. August 2013 — Cabrera receives 50-game suspension due to Biogenesis leaks, pretty much owns up to it all in tearful press conference. September 2014 — Cabrera is arrested for DUI (marijuana) while on the DL. Charges were ultimately not brought for DUI, but for resisting arrest and marijuana possession. September 2015 —After a miserable year in MLB (Orioles) and AAA (Giants), Cabrera is not called up to SF when rosters expanded. He was released after telling the AAA squad he was uninterested in playing for them in their last handful of games, expressing uncertainty about what the purpose of playing was if he wasn't getting called up to the big leagues. 2016 — ???, reports that he was playing in his native Nicaragua. Thanks for the summary. I was only aware of the steroid suspension so this was news to me.
CWSpalehoseCWS
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 10:33 PM) Enjoy Charlotte Wonder what that means for Eddy Alvarez. Would have thought he was looking at the SS job in Charlotte.
ChiSoxFanMike
I absolutely love this signing. He's young and full of potential. Edited January 8, 2017 by ChiSoxFanMike
bmags
QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 10:59 PM) Wonder what that means for Eddy Alvarez. Would have thought he was looking at the SS job in Charlotte. It means next to nothing. Cabrera may not even get out of spring training. Bob Sacamano
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 11:10 PM) It means next to nothing. Cabrera may not even get out of spring training. This. It seems like we have too much middle infield depth. Doubt everyone stays past Spring Training (minor league signings that is).
Con te Giolito
Atmosphere at camp should be pretty competitive, lots of guys vying for roster spots and plate appearances. It definitely wont be Bring Your Kid to Work Day country club with the good ol boys. Lotta money on the line for a lot of fringe guys desperately trying to keep the dream alive. Strongest will survive and hey, maybe you find a dude or two off the scrap heap (like Mr. Quintana...) who plays his way into future plans. At the very least the culture will change. Would have thought he was looking at the SS job in Charlotte. I'd guess next to nothing. Eddy is probably safe as he as upside and no checkered past. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 11:01 PM) I absolutely love this signing. He's young and full of potential. Sarcasm? He's 30.
thxfrthmmrs
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 7, 2017 -> 11:01 PM) I absolutely love this signing. He's young and full of potential. No thanks. He's terrible at everything except for base stealing. Speed will decline as he turns 30. He could seriously make Jimmy Rollins look like Carlos Correa. Dick Allen
I normally don't object to minor league deals, but this is a bad player, bad actor, getting older, who plays positions you have plenty of mediocreish guys you can look at instead. I would imagine this is a Rick Renteria deal from his SD days.
Blackout Friday
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 8, 2017 -> 08:36 AM) I would imagine this is a Rick Renteria deal from his SD days. Possible.... didn't think of that. But depth is never a "bad" thing, and I can't admin they would let someone like Cabrera get in the way of anybody important's development. Seems like a nothing deal.
bmags
We were rumored around him last year too so I'd guess someone likes him.

I'd be shocked if he's with the organization past Spring Training.
