bmags
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 04:11 PM) Its all political. Despite statements to the contrary Obama would gain nothing for using the phrase "Islamic Terrorism" and Trump gains nothing for labeling these people as racists either. The people who are screaming the loudest in both cases for these phrases to be used will absolutely dismiss them as something they should have done anyways therefore as worthless, and that they didn't really mean it anyway. It is all an effort to gain political points out of these messes. Actually, I just straight up disagree with all of this. I very much think it is important after national moments of crisis or violence for our political leaders to assert empathy and moral authority, and that either terrorism from white supremacy or radical Islam, is specifically outside the bounds of the society the US tries to build. It does not eliminate the problem but it does keep it from getting worse. I think it is very beneficial to make sure violent fringes like this know they are an out group and are not gaining approval. Trump's response lacked empathy but most importantly moral authority, and that symbolism matters. There should be a consistency in a responses to identify the tragedy, empathize with the victims and in cases of violence admonish the bad. Trump is very much giving the response that violence against "his" groups are bad but against "their" groups are inconveniences. They are both bad. Bad bad bad. We shouldn't be so poisoned to be beyond that. The shooting of scalise was awful. This is awful. His response should be parallel.
Jerksticks
QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 03:06 PM) Not that I support Trump's initial statements, but I don't get this response at all. This comes off as - "Once one radical group takes part in some isolated, tragic event we must wait for another loosely, comparable radical group to commit a comparable, outlier offense to look at things in a nuanced way." Why don't we just look at individual events for what they are instead of wedging the partisan BS into everything? Ding ding ding. Course then there wouldn't be news or anything to fight. What would all the people do, go about their days?
greg775
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 07:56 PM) Trump just condemned racism and called the KKK, neo-nazis, and white supremacists "repugnant". Bannon will be out by the end of the week, I'd guess. I know there was no real feeling behind it and he was only doing it because he had to, but TBH it was a good speech. I haven't got involved in this but I knew he'd come around to saying what everybody wanted him to say. The president is not a racist, folks, whether you want to believe that or not. Maybe he doesn't always say the right thing (remember his EGO is first and foremost on his mind everytime he opens his mouth) but he's not a racist. Sorry, I don't believe the president of the USA is a racist or KKK supporter or a Nazi supporter. I mean, cmon. Do u guys really believe that??? He's a 2 out of 10 as president but he's not those things guys. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 08:15 PM) Two days too late, though, for a man who'll insult and attack anyone he feels like by name at the drop of a hat. Whatever. At least he did it today. He ripped those bastards a good one. Edited August 14, 2017 by greg775

caulfield12
More domestic terrorism, this time in Oklahoma... OKC - A 23-year-old man who was "out for blood" when he attempted to detonate what he believed was an explosives-laden van outside an Oklahoma bank in a plot similar to the deadly 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building, authorities said Monday. During a meeting with undercover FBI agents in June, Jerry Drake Varnell of Sayre, Oklahoma, said he held "3% ideology" and wanted "to start the next revolution," a reference to the "Three Percenters" patriot movement — begun in 2008, galvanized by President Barack Obama's election — and that has rallied against gun control efforts and pledges resistance to the federal government over the infringement of constitutional rights. According to their website (3percent.org): During the American Revolution, the active forces in the field against the King's tyranny never amounted to more than 3% of the colonists. Three percenters today, for the most part, identify with this 3% because they were true patriots fighting for the freedoms the nation we love and honor was founded on. Three percenters intend to maintain their God-given natural rights to liberty and property. History itself, for good or ill, is made by determined minorities. Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed citizens to change the world. Indeed, it has never been done otherwise. StrangeSox
Being born into third generation wealth doesn't mean you have better genetics. Becoming wealthy doesn't mean your genetically superior and being poor doesn't mean you're inferior. There are a whole lot of bad implications that fall out of that line of thinking. caulfield12
Seems we're going to have to back and argue THE BELL CURVE from 1994 all over again. Sigh. caulfield12
http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/201...-victims-215489 White nationalist groups stunned that the police didn't have their backs... “I have never felt like the government or police were against me,” said white nationalist leader Richard Spencer at a small news conference inside his home here on Monday afternoon. “There has never been a situation in my life when I’ve felt this way.” Jason Kessler, the Charlottesville rally’s organizer, was also reeling. “This has changed everything,” he said. “I thought that the police would uphold constitutional law no matter what.” Kessler claimed the city’s police failed to follow through on plans for protecting the rally that they had discussed with him. He also said that during planning for the rally, one police captain divulged to him that authorities were communicating about the event using their personal emails to avoid Freedom of Information Act requests. Following Saturday’s violence, Kessler attempted to hold a news conference on Sunday in front of Charlottesville’s City Hall but was foiled by anti-racism demonstrators, some of whom physically attacked him. Kessler criticized Virginia state troopers — who intervened after a scuffle broke out — for not taking more proactive steps to protect him. StrangeSox
After taking two days to condemn Nazi terrorists who used a vehicle to murder a peaceful protestor, Donald Trump is retweeting images of running over his opposition with a vehicle. He was also retweeting an alt-right/Nazi who's a main proponent of pizzagate and has been seen paling around with Richard Spencer. GoSox05
QUOTE (raBBit @ Aug 14, 2017 -> 09:13 PM) I am aware of what eugenics is. You posted a video that was a bunch of selectively edited clips of Trump over the last 20+ years and nowhere in there did he say the word Eugenics. A lot of what he said relating to genes was pretty much common sense. If you wanted to have an offspring who would grow up to be an influential and successful person would you rather have her mother be someone like say, Ivanka Trump, or would you prefer her mother be some random 25-year-old woman in Appalachia? I think the former would lead to an offspring with a better genetic profile. There is no shortage of material to malign Trump, you don't have to take these big leaps to do it. Would you rather have a child from a great rich person or a dirty poor.
