Balta1701
QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 03:56 PM) I feel I have to remind people because I get lumped in with Trump lovers. I'm just giving him a chance unlike many on the board. We couldn't even have a nice thread wishing him the best after the election. There's no reason for me to want Trump to fail. So you look at hundreds of people detained at airports and tens of thousands of people with their Visas canceled because they worship the wrong way and you think "we need to give this a chance". There are no positive words for that.
Dick Allen
Trump going to FL again this weekend. 3 in a row. Said he would always be in the White House when he was a candidate. Said there wasn't time to take off. Criticized Obama 11 times for playing golf. It will be the 3rd weekend out of 5 he went golfing. Each trip costs taxpayers $3 million. Balta1701
QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 13, 2017 -> 04:53 PM) I said: Well, he was loved in Minnesota and I've watched long interviews with him and I like his style. I guess some of his positions are very radical but I feel like he genuinely cares about people. I could be wrong but this is a world of style over substance and I like his style. He's convinced me he's good, not evil. Maybe it's too strong to say Trump and Hillary are evil, but I feel like they are not good for the average American. This is, of course, wrong also. He took office in 1999 and was fairly popular for the first couple years, but that was also at the peak of an economic expansion where tax revenues were rising. However, in 2000, the U.S. Economy began a multi year period of recession, slow growth, and repeated financial industry fraud implosions. At that point, Minnesota's tax revenues turned around and many of the things he promised he couldn't find money to pay for. He had been sending tax rebates to people and the money dried up. At that time, he suddenly ran into a budget crisis - he wasn't a negotiator and as a consequence, when the budget had to be constrained, he became incredibly ineffective. His approval ratings in 1999 started over 70%, but by 2002, when he declared that he wasn't running for reelection, his approval ratings had dropped to 40%, and although I haven't found a good reference for the actual poll right before he left, some articles say his approval ratings had dropped into Bush-territory by then. And his celebrity bullcrap wound up taking him away from the state, hurting his ability to have an agenda, and hurting the state. Specifically, here's a Forbes article: He also sent taxpayers rebate cheques in each of his first three years. The property-tax reform, and those “Jesse cheques”, may prove his most memorable achievements. But Mr Ventura squandered his winnings. He flew around the country too much. There were too many appearances on late-night talk shows, too many cameo roles in soap operas, too much promotion of his books, often while Minnesota's legislature was still at work. He called the lawmakers “gutless cowards” for rejecting his attempt to eliminate one house of the legislature. He called the media “jackals”. He often behaved more like the wrestler he had been than the leader of the state he was now supposed to be. As his poll ratings fell, the legislature shut him out of the political process. Bills that many Minnesotans urgently wanted to become law were signed only at the eleventh hour, and sometimes not at all. Critics are tempted to say that Mr Ventura's governorship has been an indictment of third-party politics. But Minnesota under Mr Ventura never had a real third party. He had no solid body of supporters in the legislature. And the Independence Party was a party in name only; having helped to create it after the Reform Party broke apart in 2000, Mr Ventura did little to make it more than a vehicle for his own ego. As one legislator bitingly said, “We've got two parties and a celebrity.” Add in a s***ton of racism and some holocaust denial, and that sounds disturbingly familiar. StrangeSox
Couldn't even make it a month before a top level advisor had to resign in disgrace amid an international scandal that the president himself almost definitely knew about and was for sure warned about by multiple intelligence agencies and the interim attorney general he fired.
