NorthSideSox72
Looking like an August road trip to New England this coming summer. My wife and I, and kids aged 8.5 and 5 at that time. Who has any recommendations on things to do, places to stay, etc.? All ideas are helpful! Also we will be stopping to see Niagara Falls on the way to or from, so any recommendations on that are also happily accepted. Go hive mind! If you are going to do Niagara the best way to do it is to do the Canadian side. The best thing we did while up there was to sign up for an all-encompassing tour through our hotel. For a fraction of the price of doing each of the attractions individually (journey behind the falls, maid of the mist tour, etc) we got to do like 5 or 6 different things, plus we did them with our group only instead of with the general public. The best example was in the Maid of the Mist boat ride, there were only the 13 of us in our tour group, versus the hundreds that they cram on for a normal boat tour. StrangeSox
Agree with ss2k5--Canadian side is way better. The town on that side has a very Wisconsin Dells vibe to it, which could be good for kids. My wife and I did a road trip from Boston up to Bar Harbor, Maine and back last summer. Once you're in Maine, there are all sorts of little resort beach towns all along Highway 1 on the coast, with plenty of family-friendly activities. If your kids are at all into hiking like you and your wife are, Acadia NP would be a great place to stop. That's the most accessible trail system we've been on so far, with plenty of trails ranging in difficulty and terrain all starting right off the roadways running around Mt. Desert island. Balta1701
Acadia is incredible. There are tons of family-like places both in Bar Harbor and on the roads around there. Do not get an ice cream dish called a "cannonball". It's way bigger than you think it will be. Can add more specific recommendations if you head there, although that ice cream one might seem rather specific.
NorthSideSox72
Thanks everyone for the input so far. Canadian side does sound better for the Falls, and I am not sure we are going to spend a ton of time there anyway, maybe a half day. Acadia NP might be the only thing on our list that is already "must do". Looking like our main spots will be Niagara Falls, Stowe and it's stuff in Vermont, and Acadia / Bar Harbor in Maine. Probably.
StrangeSox
This is where we stayed: http://www.barharbormanor.com/ It was nice, recently renovated (or built? newish anyway), good on price and only a couple of blocks from the main street. I don't know if we had a "favorite" hike there, just lots of good ones.
StrangeSox
We stopped here on our way up to Acadia/Bar Harbor. http://www.maine.gov/ifw/education/wildlifepark/ Lots of rescue animals, so you get a chance to see some brown bears, foxes, moose etc. up close. Like a mini-zoo and worth the quick stop.

The Sir
Boothbay Harbor was a lovely day trip. Especially if you like good sea food. Passed through Bath on the way there in summer 2015. That was cool too, since you could see one of the Navy's new destroyers (Zumwalt class) nearing completion.
