Sleepy Harold
Chicago White Sox @whitesox 10s C Kevan Smith has been outrighted to Class AAA Charlotte. He will still participate in major-league camp as a non-roster invitee.

Dick Allen
Could be a sign they need the space, or it could be convenience. They saw an opportunity to get him through, so they did. Maybe later in the spring someone needs a catcher and claims him. Eventually Soto will need a spot, assuming he makes the team.
flavum
I notice Bourjos was never added to the NRI list. Did he possibly get a major league deal, and now it's going to be official?

Yeah it's likely something like this. They could sign someone and then worry about subtracting from the 40 after so I don't think they're signing anyone. But I think he and Soto will make the team out of Spring Training and they probably figure they found a spot to try to pass someone through and took advantage. bmags
Yeah obviously with Bourjos and Soto we'll need the space and not sure I've paid enough attention before if they preemptively make space for probable major leaguers on minor league deals... but hope it means something more exciting than that. Exactly. Probably nothing, but except for a couple days in early December, this offseason has been brutal.

Sleepy Harold
Bruce Levine @MLBBruceLevine now White Sox outright C Kevan Smith (Triple A) Roster at 39 . flavum
There's no need to clear a spot for Soto right now, and you don't have to proactively clear a spot before a trade--there's wiggle room there after a trade is made. I would guess this is a new free agent being added.

They figured right now, as opposed to end of Spring Training after possible injuries, is a better time to sneak someone through waivers. They don't risk losing Smith to a team that needs catching depth. Edited February 10, 2017 by soxfan2014
shipps
Now Bruce, why you wanna go and ruffle peoples feathers over nothing like that? Knowing damn well that doenst mean any trade is going down just because some 40-man tinkering.

They don't risk losing Smith to a team that needs catching depth. Kind of an odd move right before sprint training. I don't know if I buy this as trying to open a spot for Soto. Seems really foolish to guarantee Soto a position at his age and injury history before ST even begins, unless they did a handshake type of deal. I wouldn't mind Wieters at a 1 yr. deal as a sign and flip candidate, but I think the Sox really want Narvaez to prove what he's got. We now have two catchers on the 40 man roster, which makes sending down Smith (and risk losing him) to open up a spot for a frequently injured Soto pretty crazy. I would say this pretty much means another move is coming.
flavum
Ryan Howard would be funny, but it also wouldn't bother me.
Dick Allen
I didn't realize outright waivers are irrevocable.so if another team claimed Smith, the Sox couldn't have pulled him back. Either something is cooking or they were pretty certain he would make it through, or they didn't really care if another team claimed him.
