With the story that the Bears have started actively looking to trade Jay Cutler, there is also this.

ESPN Stats & InfoVerified account‏@ESPNStatsInfo 2h2 hours ago Jay Cutler is 1 of 10 QB to make $100M+ in cash value since 2009. Cutler is 1 of 3 with a non-winning record as a starter in that span.

So the Bears let Alshon walk for nothing. If you knew you would do that why the hell did you not trade him last year?

They must think Cam Meredith is going to be great and that White is going to be healthy and good. I dont believe in either of the two to be honest.

Just creating another hole. Unbelievable.

Especially considering they won't be able to spend all their cap space even if they tagged him.

That's my problem. Even if it is a huge overpay, what the hell else are you spending money on? Might as well keep Alshon since you have so much cap space anyway.

Questions at WR, an injury plagued TE, and suspect tackles.......Sounds like a perfect situation to throw a rookie QB in to.

If I'm the Bears I tank again and hope to get one of the 2 QBs coming out next year. Throw Hoyer back there for a year, build the defense, see what you have in guys like Meredith and White, throw Long at LT.

Maybe draft a 4th round QB like a Webb or Peterman.

In my ideal world the Bears bring in Gillmore or Bouye. Draft Jamal Adams and Gareon Conley in the first 2 rounds. That sets up Conley and Gillmore/Bouye at CB with Adams and Amos/Bush/Fuller at safety. A rebuilt secondary will go a long way into making this a top 10 defense.

This to the tenth degree.

Letting him walk right now makes zero damn sense. It feels like this is Fox's doing which makes this even more frustrating but who the hell knows.

Yeah, and every time Alshon was healthy and in a game it was like "whoa he is so much better".

I am really surprised, but am also going to blame rams for their idiotic Tavon Austin signing.

Here is the primary issue, I think. It doesn't happen often enough.

And the McCaskeys will pocket an additional $15 million for fielding a s***ty team.

I think they would actually be smart to let him walk. He's a good player, but not great and he's had a history of injuries. Throw in the suspension and it should be easy choice to let him walk.

No not really. He had a season where he was injured but for the most part he has been out there pretty consistently. They arent trying to cut costs to afford other players. If they tagged him it would have no effect on their ability to sign any other players nor would it compromise their future ability to sign players. He may have a down year because you never know in football but there would be no risk in bringing him back another year or tagging him with a possibility of a trade for a mid rounder. Hell even for a late round pick is better than nothing.

WTF...this is ridiculous. Way to absolutely ruin a potential asset. What the heck.

Jeffery is gonna get like 15 million a year and then catch like 60 passes next year.

You could always tag and trade him. You could get at least a future 2nd round pick (I would think) and your cap situation could afford the worse case scenario which is he stays another year under franchise tag (we have so much cap space it wouldn't be a problem). It also gives you another year to see on White as well as see what Meredith could become. This is just terrible. Awful management of assets.

Note: Are the Bears are banking on the"compensatory pick" that they will get for him. If you sign a bunch of free agents and lose a big name free agent, do you actually get a pick?

What you think about Alshons health, production, ped suspension, etc is really irrelevant. The bears losing assets with no compensation is not good at all for a rebuilding team.

It's very relevant. If it costs too much to sign him, it makes it difficult to trade him. If his contract demands were too high, nobody will trade for him, considering how often he is off the field.

He may do this on purpose. Make his contract prohibitive for him to stay here because he really didn't seem to want to stay.

No,it's not relevant at all. He is gonna get paid his money, if you aren't willing to pay him what he wants, you trade him and move on, last year in this current offseason. There is no "costs too much to sign him". You don't let him walk for nothing. Teams like the Bears do this bulls*** and it bites them in the ass, teams like the Patriots don't do this.

Tag and trade isn't that easy. A team has to give up a draft pick and then try and work out a deal with a player who was looking to get top money in free agency. You probably aren't getting a 2nd or 3rd for that. They probably get a 3rd or 4th round comp pick for him. So it's not like they are totally losing out.

They probably should have tried to lock him up a couple years ago. Who knows, maybe they did and he said no thanks.

Well, maybe we'll finally get a comp pick and they think that would have beat what they'd have gotten on market.

I still think this is dumb as hell.

Can anyone confirm...do they look at comp picks in isolation (for losing a player)? Or do they look at the net gains / losses via free agency. So for example, if the Bears signed like 6 pretty good size free agents, but loss Alshon, would they consider the fact that we signed other guys when evaluating for whether we deserve a pick for losing Alshon? If the answer is no, then I could understand this as I would suspect we'd get a decent comp pick for him (maybe one of those end of 3rd round ones).

That said, I thought they look at players lost and gained, in which case, I presume we'll get nothing, since we will likely be signing a good number of free agents.

Look at what they got the last two years for players like Jared Allen, Brandon Marshall, Bennett etc.

If they honestly think a comp pick is the best they could have done, something is wrong
