southsider2k5
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 10:22 AM) He needs reps A full season in AAA will go a long way towards helping him improve. We have to remember that Moncada is a prospect at this point, not a finished player This. It wasn't even planned for him to be on the opening day roster, so this isn't exactly a surprise. BlackSox13
Eh, no big surprise that Moncada needs more time. He's 21 and except for the brief call-up last September, he has not played above AA. He will be fine, just need to be patient with him.

I think some fans got caught up in the hype and forgot just how young and raw Moncada still is. Even if Moncada took two more years to fully develop in the minors before he became MLB ready, he would still be a mere 23 years old. A rebuilding team like the Sox have time on their side. I'm not going to lie, I thought we'd see a little more from Moncada than we've seen thus far this spring. He is young, but being the #2 ranked prospect and the headliner for Chris Sale - I was hoping to get wowed a bit this spring. Part of it for me was wanting to see what made him such a huge prospect. His numbers don't really stand out in the minors like some of the other blue chip type prospects' numbers do. He didn't tear up any leagues like Kris Bryant, Austin Meadows or Benintendi have. So what exactly made him this monster prospect and when will it start to show it's face? Again, I know he's 21 and we need to be patient. Just saying I have a tinge of concern, that's all. Great point and totally agree. I think another thing that goes unnoticed is his maturity as a man. To sign a huge money contract at such a young age with so much raw untapped talent and no professional experience has got to be an incredible amount of pressure to which he has handled amazingly well. Dude is mature beyond his years. To me, his demeanor is more along the lines of Jose Abreu and that's a very good thing.

No offense, but what the f*** are you talking about it? As a middle infielder, he put up a .923 & .910 OPS in A+ & AA respectively. That's the definition of dominating. Pretty much the same results or better than Benintendi or Meadows. Bryant is an absolute freak and if you're expecting his level offense then you'll be dissapointed no matter what. YouCanPutItOnTheBoardYES!
My fear is that the Sox will call him up too early. He's super young like others have said and should improve his K rate over time, but I'm worried that they'll throw him to the wolves too quickly and it would be harder for him to improve at the MLB level than at AA or AAA. At this point, I hope he stays down in the minors until September at the earliest.

Be patient and he can blossom into a franchise player for the Sox

Not really fair to compare Moncada to those three. Those players had the benefit of playing for three years in college before being drafted into a teams' minor league system. Three years of college baseball experience goes a long way in terms of development. Moncada's youth, raw untapped talent and high ceiling is what makes Moncada a potential monster. If Moncada takes another year or two to develop, look at the bright side. It means Moncada would be leading the next wave of hitters for callups. A wave of Moncada, Collins, Basabe, Fisher, Call etc would be pretty bad ass.
Chicago White Sox
QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 11:47 AM) With 40+ stolen bases. Yup, the fact this kid can draw walks & hit for power in addition to steal bases at an elite level is why he's so special in the first place. And outside of a high K rate in AA, nothing this kid has done stastically in the minors should be considered anything but super impressive. We're talking about a 21 year old two years removed from Cuba here. With a bit more seasoning, this kid is most likely going to be a monster. A rough spring training where is most likely pressing should not change things a bit. Edited March 13, 2017 by Chicago White Sox

Be patient and he can blossom into a franchise player for the Sox I never understand the need to set these timelines. The player will dictate when he is ready. Maybe that's two months in AAA, maybe it's an entire year. When you're dealing with prospects of Moncada's caliber, sometimes the light bulb will just suddenly click. And once he's no longer being challenged in the minors, it makes sense for him to complete his development at the major league level. steveno89
QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 13, 2017 -> 12:37 PM) I have seen three ABs from Moncada this spring. He's gone 1-3 with a double a 2Ks in those three ABs. The only double he had he flicked his hands over the outer half and short hopped the CF fence. Another AB he had 6 pitches, did not swing once and was rung up on ball four. The ball was way off the plate. The other time I saw him strike out it was on a ball too. Obviously, this stuff happens but if he got these two walks, his stats would look a lot different. If he got these two walks, instead of the K's, his AVG/OBP would be .222/.382. This is a very small sample size is my point as opposed to making excuses for the guy. This guy was an offensive force last year at two leagues when he was playing over his age. He went to the AFL and showed more of the same. This is a guy with elite speed, the ability to take a walk (at age 21 mind you) and an elite arm. He's struggling with offspeed and making contact yes, but there's no bust in this guy's game. It's a matter of how close he comes to his ceiling. Frankly, what I've seen from the guy at the plate has made me more excited. This guy doesn't even need to square up the ball to get it out of the park. His hands and overall strength are ridiculous. If he extends and makes some form of barrel contact there's a possibility it's going to get a XB. He's just that strong. TLDR, there are enough tools in this guy that he can be a very productive player regardless of how much he strikes out. People need to relax. Moncada is built like a NFL running back, lean and strong While he has racked up k's, he also draws a solid amount of walks at this stage of development I also do not see a player with bust potential, but rather an mvp candidate/one of the best players in baseball ceiling and a floor of a solid mlb starter He's our blue chip guy, one who the Sox will continue to add talent to build around moving forward
hi8is
His double against the Dodgers late last night was impressive. 1.) He was out in front and off the ball a bit 2.) He didn't make solid contact 3.) The ball still hit off the wall and could have been a home run at the cell / great down arrow field On the other side of the coin, he looked completely lost in the 4 at bats prior to this
