Nokona
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 8, 2017 -> 08:41 AM) For a leadoff hitter, you look at OBP which is still low at .321. With those numbers, no wonder everyone is shook...
Panerista
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 8, 2017 -> 08:41 AM) For a leadoff hitter, you look at OBP which is still low at .321. You cross the two. The fact is, if he were hitting, he'd make sense as a leadoff man with his OBP so much higher than his batting average. That being said, if he's hitting, you want him in a position to drive in runs and the leadoff spot isn't it. This is one of those Maddonisms that just isn't working. Yeah I think they should probably play the hot hand and go with Jon Jay (.437 obp) at leadoff spot.

Yet they are almost a lock to make the playoffs again. That division makes the AL Central look tough.
bmags
I get that 18 inning games are rare, but when I woke up and looked at my feed it was a bunch of national/local media acting like this was the first extra innings game in history.

caulfield12
The White Sox for most of the last decade would have been fairly happy to have an OPS of 700 at the leadoff spot. For the Cubs, compared to what Fowler did for most of last season, it's unacceptable. Granted, a month ago Kris Bryant was one of the worst hitters in baseball, it doesn't take long to reverse those numbers in the first half of the season. Dick Allen
Kyle Schwarber may be the most hyped career .226 hitter with less than 2 career WAR in MLB history. You would think the HOF for him is just a formality. His career fWAR is exactly the same as Tyler Saladino's. You can definitely see super hero type potential in a guy with his power and his natural offensive ability. He may never fulfill that potential but if he gets close it will be scary. I have actually read him being compared to Babe Ruth in multiple spots. That's a bigger stretch than Avi getting compared to Miguel Cabrera. He's going to have a hard time living up to the hype. The problem is even if he does hit like that, he's still not going to be super valuable because he doesn't offer anything else of value. His ceiling is basically prime Adam Dunn, which is a fine player, but not justified by the hype.

He used to run a bit, and was a cover boy for BP after a crazy call up season.

If they did that deal, they'd still have Torres in the system. Though I do think Schwarber will turn it around at the plate a bit. We can't really say that yet without seeing careers play out though. Schwarber could have been good get for the Yankees too seeing as though could DH with the short porch in RF and see time at 1B and little in LF. It would've been a better deal no matter what for the Cubs because: 1. Schwarber is a DH that isn't even that good 2. The Indians wouldn't have had Miller in the World Series 3. Miller wasn't a rental 4. They'd still have Torres

Actually, maybe it was Schwarber they wanted for Chapman at first. I can't remember exactly. Just getting Schwarber for Miller wouldn't make much sense.
