CaliSoxFanViaSWside
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Apr 4, 2017 -> 05:12 AM) The line up might actually produce more runs later in the season with the young guys + Abreu if the Sox keep him around for Moncada's sake. Ideally the Sox could move Q, Shields and Gonzalez but then who the hell starts ? The Rodon situation doesn't feel right, like it's a precursor to a larger injury. Sox might want to sign Peavy or Fister or Edwin Jackson or check into the remaining free agent starters. I think they need another guy to eat innings when Covey , Shields and Gonzalez all bomb. They will wreck their bullpen arms. Called it . Pelfrey

In the minor leagues. The major league team doesn't matter the next few seasons. That's why you'd have to have rocks in your head to pay full price for a ticket at any time. Stubhub box seats for 15 bucks is the way to go this season.
ChiliIrishHammock24
QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 09:33 PM) Hashtag stays because it's funny Yeah, for me it's more about the idea of trying to get the #1 pick, not necessarily the best chance at draft Seth Beer. It all depends on who is the best player available at our pick.
Feeky Magee
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 7, 2017 -> 07:43 PM) Average below .250. Not looking like a first round pick. BABIP of .209, hitting .255/.488/.582, 22 walks, 8 strikeouts.

Serious question... from a somewhat stat n00b... How does one have a batting average on balls in play below their batting average?
Soha
QUOTE (hi8is @ Apr 9, 2017 -> 05:41 PM) Serious question... from a somewhat stat n00b... How does one have a batting average on balls in play below their batting average? Gonna guess that stat doesn't include home runs, which he has 9 of so far. Now, why a stat would be useful by subtracting home runs is beyond me.

How does one have a batting average on balls in play below their batting average? It doesn't count home runs, because it's a way to determine how lucky a player is getting on his balls in play being turned into outs, and home runs can't be turned into outs. I guess, but it also seems to count strikeouts, which aren't anymore 'in play' than home runs.

It doesn't count strikeouts, that's the whole point. It allows you see a player's batting average not tied to frequency of contact.

Seth Beer's current stats (that are relevant to this discussion) as listed on Clemson's site: Overall stats: .265 BA, 113ab, 30 hits, 9 home runs, 18 strikeouts Stats with homeruns taken out: .202 BA, 104ab, 21 hits Stats with homeruns and strikeouts taken out: .244 BA, 86ab, 21 hits The numbers with hr's taken out, but not strikeouts is the closest one to the .209 listed earlier in the thread. That was based off a slightly different point, because his average was .255 there, but is .265 right now. Maybe I'm having a brain fart and there's something else to discount from his totals that hasn't dawned on me.
